With the 2012 Olympic Games in London, there's no doubt spectators are facing a tough time finding hotels or apartments on a budget. You might as well set up camp in someone's backyard — and now there's a service that lets you do just that.
Campinmygarden is like Airbnb for people who don't mind roughing it a bit, or CouchSurfing for people who prefer tents to couches. Property owners list their outdoor spaces online for campers to browse and rent.
Most of the gardens listed are in the UK, but I did spot a few in the US and Canada, all across Europe, and scattered through other parts of the world, such as Nicaragua and Indonesia. The accommodations range from "bamping" (basic camping, with nothing more than a space to pitch your tent) to "glamping" (glamorous camping, which offers luxury appointments like cabins and hot showers).
You can browse by location or by event (helpful when a major show sends hotel prices skyrocketing in a particular city). You can also filter your search by amenities required, whether you need a dog-friendly campsite or proximity to a landmark.
A quick search through Campinmygarden's listings pulled up everything from modest urban backyards to vast country estates, and some properties even boast chickens, horses, deer, and other friendly neighbors sharing your space.
You can pitch a small tent in a vegetable garden in Belgium...
Soak up the sun at your own private lake in the British countryside...
Park your motorhome on a mountain lot in Spain...
Stay in a shepherd's hut just a 20-minute drive from the Olympic cycle route...
Or experience an authentic Berber tent at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
Listing and browsing locations are both free on Campinmygarden.com. If this concept takes off in the US, I think it would be such a fun and unique way to "garden surf" across America!
