Reuben & Paul's Rancho Reubidoux

The Gardenist

Paul and Reuben live in sunny and dry Southern California, where water is scarce and lush tropical gardens and acres of green lawns (while all too frequently built with the aid of high doses of irrigation) can seem downright irresponsible. But at their self titled Rancho Reubidoux home, they have proven that garden style doesn't have to come with a hose attached.

One of the things that makes this garden so special is the ever changing and evolving collection of arranged flea market finds which elevate the more spare plantings and keep things inviting and interesting. In my opinion, some of the still-lifes that mix plants with quirky objects and rusty remnants border on high art (but I'm no art expert — I just know what I like).

Paul and Reuben's blog has many more images, as well as lots of insight into their projects and how they are inspired to create their garden. Heavy influences here are recycled treasures, water wise plants, and making the inexpensive look like something of value. My personal favorite is the before and after of the enviably cool vinyl sofas that they painted with createx paint (full how-to) to be much more colorful and interesting.
