Name: Gary & Barbara Brewer
Location: Park Hill — Yonkers, New York
Our house is a 1906 house in Park Hill, Yonkers which is a planned community from 1895 drawing on the naturalism of the Hudson River Valley — yet fifteen minutes from Manhattan. I am an architect (a partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects) and Barbara is in theater costuming at the Julliard School. We both were tired with urban living in the city when we bought this fixer-upper ten years ago. Project by project, we had the house restored to its pre-war character to provide a relaxing suburban retreat for us and our wire hair fox terriers.
This neighborhood is a testament to the neighborhoods everywhere in the America with amazing pre-war houses rescued by homeowners that recognize the remarkable quality of an earlier generation of fine homebuilding.

I grew up in this neighborhood and now live in Los Angeles. Frankly, some of the houses here are the most beautiful in the country, better than Beverly Hills and many of them are more expensive. Your home is a reminer that nothing beats NY. Ever. Thanks for the reminder.
