When I was looking back at the year's archive of parenting posts one theme kept coming up again and again: gender. Our readers are a pretty progressive bunch and much of the discussion through the year was a reaction against marketing and media images portraying children in stereotypical gender roles. We also talked about breaking out of these stereotypes in our own homes.

Sprout Side Table
The problem I have most with such a huge emphasis on this is that lots of parents are forcing their opinions on their kids. Kids don't give a shit about gender neutrality- that's an adult concept. Kids like what they like. I believe in letting them have options. If I were to have a little girl who liked pink I wouldn't burden her with how that's wrong and wouldn't she much rather have blue or yellow because it's gender-neutral. Expose kids to things you'd think would benefit them and in the end let them choose and allow them to trust in their decisions. To me, pushing your views on them is just as inhibiting as those damn stereotypes.
I'm also really bothered by the 'trendiness' of it all, ifyouknowwhatImean.
I have 7 and 4 year old daughters and a 2 year old son. From the beginning we've treated everything as gender neutral, as pretty much everything is. They play with all manner of toys and wear whatever they want. The girls tend towards frilly pink stuff and my son often steals their clothes. My oldest prefers books and computers to toys, the 4 year old prefers dolls, and the youngest will play with anything.
My 3 year old boys favorite colors are pink and gold. So unlike most people, my problem is more like "Why do girls get all the pink?"
Pink is just a color.
This truly is the only site I visit that has anything about being gender neutral. Its annoying.
