- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The light! I face south, and have windows across the length of the apartment. The sun fills the whole place. Having a decent sized patio is also a blessing. In the summer, it is a fantastic place for friends to hang out and enjoy cold drinks, and the ocassional Canucks playoff game.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge is definitely the space. in 390sqft, where almost half is taken up by a bathroom/kitchen/entryway, there isn't a whole lot of space left for furniture. I had to axe a proper dining space in favour of a mounted computer desk (in what was an awkward corner). I also can't afford to keep clutter in a space this small, so I keep only what makes me happy.

Sprout Side Table
Really clean (in all senses of the word). And thanks for the floor plan; I'm guessing I'm not the only one who loves a floor plan.
Can we see the balcony and the bathroom, Geoff?
I have a nearly identical size and layout in my studio but this is way cooler. But I wanted a big screen TV and good speakers, so that forced me to make some compromises.
I love your kitchen! You've managed to make those cabinets work. I like the side table that doubles as a nightstand and makes a transition from bedroom to living space. And is that a pink bathroom?
Very nice and I too love your kitchen. I would kill for all that window space! I have a little more sq. footage and you have given me a few ideas. Thanks and enjoy you patio this summer.
I love this place. The kitchen makes me cry, though. I could never cook in a space that small, so special kudos to you for being able to do it.
You are so fortunate to have all that light and a balcony. That's what makes a small space truly wonderful. Love your place - so sweet and neat! :)
Living southward facing is the best! In my childhood home I had the southward facing room and loved it. Have you ever considered a small window sill garden?
Really great place, Geoff.
The study alcove with the hairpin leg is such a terrific solution.
adorable!
Wouldn't it have been possible to put a desk in one of your 3 closets?
Favorite! I love this place. It manages to look both cozy and crisp. I love the fact that you turned an awkward corner into a working part of your home. And I'm jealous of your southern exposure...I've been lucky enough to have it in one apartment, and I miss it like crazy.
Also, you must be tall. Being able to put a microwave on top of the fridge would be an awesome real-life cheat code, but it just doesn't work for us short people.
This is beautiful. Bright, airy, and clean, yet still manages to not feel souless. Lovely.
What a great looking place! You can come over decorate my place now! K THANKS!
Love it Geoff! My favorite thing is the Hudson Bay blanket!
Love your apartment! that blue couch is amazing!
Love it!! You've done such a fantastic job. :)
Your place is really nice! Almost hotel like. Good job!
Quite elegant!
Is that sofa available somewhere? I love it, and I want it!
This is what I love about small spaces. You've used your keen sense of design to convince the eye your place is spacious. Obviously you have talent. I love it!
Thanks for all the nice comments/compliments! It's my humble little dwelling.
Naneen/Nailbunny - It is, indeed, a pink bathroom. (ick) Not my scene.
Keira - The closets are all full! That's where all the "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" things are hiding.
Girl Jen - Microwave isn't ideal up there.. but there's literally no other option! I don't use it often, and I am definitely not tall.
Mejohnst - Craigslist find. Discontinued IKEA. Not sure of the name, sorry!
Thanks again for all the votes and comments! :)
The kitchen is beautiful. But that beautiful bed is my favorite.
Love the desk alcove too, though I'd go insane without space to spread out my papers.
I love that you have made room for your juicer!
@postagenotes - I've turned down apartments that had those kitchen cabinets and pink tile. Even if you don't win the content, congratulations for making those eyesores look good!
Your place is very, very nice. I love the organization which really makes very good use of the space you have. It's very clean and bright. You did an amazing job with the space.
Love that bed! I just want to lie on it and read a book and just take a nap. Place looks clean and airy without being too stark white.
@sundaymorning - I have been looking for a long skinny planter that I can use for the window sill above my headboard. I would love to have a row of succulents up there. I am picky though.. and I haven't found one I love. In the meantime, a photo of my childhood puppy gets that spot. :)
So clean and neat. You seem to have everything you need, but it's not cluttered or overdone. I like the use of baskets in the kitchen. Looks like it is perfectly organized. .
expansive. The room is not divided up. The bed is in the living room. The sofa and chair are in the bedroom. It is a studio, and you might as well accept that it is. Everything is right sized.
I love the overall design. Many great design ideas to copy and use in my place...thanks :)
This is my favorite so far. Clean & open.
Love it! I am so inspired by your teeny home! Especially the kitchen. We're waiting to close on a tiny house with a similar kitchen. We have no money at the moment to do much more to the kitchen than painting, etc., and it's very hard to find ideas on ways to make it prettier and more inviting, so I'm thrilled you posted these photos! ^_^
You have captured the essence of a small space with class and charm. These pictures should be in a design mag.
Stunning! Love everything about this place!
I love those pillows, and the pops yellows and strips around the apartment ;)
Good choice of furniture distribution, very clean and organized... and white walls in a tiny space clears your mind and it seems bigger... I love your bedroom, big windows = more light = more space! thumbs up!
Geoff - Wonderful little desk and chair! May I ask where you got them from?
LOVE IT! The throw pillows are adorable, and the way you opened up your kitchen space by taking off the cupboard doors is genius.
This almost looks like a hotel - the type I'd love to stay in. The best part? "I keep only what makes me happy." This is great.
Were the closets built in? Or, did you make small nooks as closets?
Wow, I love it! So bright, clean, and modern without being sterile at all. You even managed to make those ubiquitous white-with-oak-trim rental kitchen cabinets look fab! Nice job.
@Jeannia - I built the desk out of an as-is piece from ikea, and a hairpin leg from a great little retro store called "Refind on Main" - in Vancouver. The brown chair/ottoman was from HomeSense.
@cashstrapped - The closets are all proper closets, with built in shelves, etc.
At the risk of sounding stalker-ish, this is one of the NICEST homes I've ever seen on AT! Not only do I hope you win, it would be nice if AT brought you on as one of their writers.
Impressive, Geoff!
fellow Vancouverite!!! GREAT JOB! Love the personality you have injected! You have fantastic taste, the Husdons bay blanket nailed it for me! :D
very nice! love the couch, bed (that's the way to make a bed), and the display above the couch. warm but simple.
this is a well balanced space. feels airy and clean and modern without clutter. this gets my vote.
@jessica604 - Hey!! Happy we've got some Vancouver love in the house! :) Thanks for the kind words.
Job well done. You worked a miracle with in a small space. Your natural light is a huge bonus. Good luck and hope you win!
I love everything about this apartment! Especially the living room. Great mix of neutrals and color :)
All that light makes the place look twice as big. And I love that you found room for a juicer in your teeny tiny kitchen! :)
Bright light and airy, gorgeous living space! Love the couch with floating shelf, and the desk solution is smart. Thanks for the floor plan, I love seeing these as it helps give me ideas for my own small space.
I can't help but wonder if the kitchen could be made a little more interesting; any way to get rid of the tan trim?
the first one that I see with a nice furniture selection, except the bed that's a huge misser who wants to live in a hotel suite, I would have picked a Murphy bed wallunit!
This to me is depressing and I lived in these small studios and had a sofa bed!
Does anyone agree this bed is way to big for the space unless the bed is a major part of your life ;-)
This is a winner. Love his space.
Sexy, masculine, and stylish. Well done!
This is easily the best entry I've seen so far. No offense to the others, but they don't even come close. Well done...
Clean and crisp and love the blue sofa with the yellow stripes pillow
Wow and all in 390 sq ft. not a foot wasted. Impressive.
beautiful. i give you my vote. welldone
I love it! The minimalist thing really appeals to me. Also, I want to move to BC, but I hear Vancouver is really expensive.
This is, by far, my favorite entry yet!
Beautiful apartment! Vancouver's my home too and it's incredible... if you find a space with light like this!
OMG! Where did you get the desk from? :-)
Still one of the best entries!!!
@mnm_mom - It's a piece of as-is IKEA. Can't remember the name.. but it's the folding wall-mounted table. I just added a hairpin leg from a local retro thrift shop, and drilled a hole for the wire grommet. :)
@drewfacey - <3 Vancouver
WOW! This tiny little studio apartment looks so spacious...tons of sunlight which i love! Great design!
The blue sofa is a great touch. You got my vote!
A perfect space. Good luck!
He can have a dining room easily. Make one of those over the bed tables that is the width of the bed and the height of a dining table. During the night it can be pushed to the bottom of the bed when not in use and during the day it can rest over the bed. When you have company you push it into the middle of the room and place folding chairs around it......presto a diningroom!
Your desk solution is pure genius. Congratulations!
Hey Geoff, where did you get that coffee table? I've been looking for one just like it (and am in Canada too!). Thanks!
@Cracked-Out Fish - I made it using hairpin legs from a store called Refind on Main Street, in Vancouver, and a cabinet panel.
I don't know how often Refind has the legs in stock, because they sell pre-owned stuff, but I know there's a girl who makes hairpin legs in custom sizes for $25 per piece. http://www.vancouverreclaimed.com/2011/12/hairpin-legs.html
Hi Geoff, great job decorating it! Practical and functional!
I'm wondering whether your office chair is Ronnie Wire Base Chair from Overstock? Is it comfortable to sit for an hour or so? Thanks!
What a surprise that you won (not), seeing as you were the 1st entry for the international section.
Canadian entries always win the "International" section. Even though there were much cooler entries than this. Oh well....
Amazing, Geoff -you make 390sq ft look huge. Congrats on winning -you deserved it.
go van city go :)
