Get A Bird on It: 10 Bird Feeders & Houses

My husband and I have been working on overhauling our small city backyard since last summer. The biggest chunk of the work has happened already, and I've been imagining all the finishing touches. Besides thinking a lot about plants, my mind has gone to the birds.

When you look for feeders, remember that different styles, shapes, and feed will work better for different birds. (Check out the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for helpful information.) For example, goldfinches can eat upside down, bluebirds are picky about the shape and location of the feeder, and hummingbirds want fresh, clean syrup (meaning frequent changes).
