This is part two of my retro 80s project in the apartment upstairs from my own. Why don’t you paint an icon on the wall of your studio?
Whereas my neighbor wanted a portrait of Madonna in her studio, my inspiration for this really came from Demi Moore’s pad in St. Elmo’s Fire, which I’ve written about elsewhere, and which I’ve wanted to recreate for some time.
In keeping with our ultra-feminine 80s theme we started out with a base coat of pink paint. You can see from my small thumbnails and sample boards that our first choice was too pink, and we settled on Pink Dynasty. If you think you detect a note of brown in this color, it’s because this is the lightest tint of something called Dark Walnut. And instead of a painting in purple, we settled on Vintage Wine, which also gave me all those marvelous 80s era thistle grays as a mid-tone. Also, I made printouts and a grid over my first photo to help me find the scale — the room was so tight I had to make sure her eyes weren’t crossed.
And I must say, all this got me thinking about this: why an icon? Because it’s fun, for starters. But when we paint Elvis or Marilyn, Grace Jones or Mother Mary on the wall, we’re not literally representing them as much as we’re trying to draw a dotted line around a part of how they make us feel. In this instance, I think, Madonna equals a generation’s ultimate freedom to put on a wedding dress and writhe around in front of the orchestra pit and make great music videos and, well — get into the groove. Madonna’s the bad girl with a big heart that really isn’t that bad either, she’s more like your big kooky sister.
As luck would have it, this standing floor lamp comes in exactly at the right level to suggest a drop earring. Just like Billy Idol.

Shaw's Original Fir...
good on you!
I love the mural, I think it is great! I also loved Demi's apartment in St. Elmo's fire.
Really glad the '80s are over.
It's a great mural!
I'm just not sure I could stand to look at someone's face all day. But I switch out the art in my frames often so maybe I'm just daunted by something so permanent.
This is a great project!
Ditto...on being glad the 80s are over! Demi's apartment in St. Elmo's Fire always cracked me up.....even back when I saw it in the theaters in the 80s.
Um I don't understand why people would want a gigantic picture of someone they don't for them to look at day after day. But hey to each his own. I've never even been tempted to get marilyn monroe pics or james dean pics or even GASP that breakfast at tiffany's gal that everyone seems to be in awe of. Guess it's the same reason why I don't have pics of obama, jesus or martin luther king in my home. I'm not into having strangers, literally or figuratively, in my home. It's my escape from the world. It's a space that nurtures, friends, family and great memories. I feel like if I want a pic that will represent a memory or a feeling I'll display those actual things, like photos of my friends from high school or my favorite blanket, favorite dress that I can no longer fit into or cook my fave meals from that conjures nostalgia. Well like I said, to each his own.
Yeah it's a NO for me too... it's not witty, just dated.
Wow, the mural is gorgeous!
Awesome!!! Just another way to show Her Madgesty is in the Pantheon where she belongs!
Love the madonna mural but not the rest of the apartment, I too survived the 80s with a bad perm and pink harem pants tucked into my white sock/keds combo. Would have loved the mural as an accent wall in an otherwise white/chrome powder room or walk in closet.
I love the wall. I've slept under Madonna for 21 days now and she's never glanced at me once. Mark did an amazing job. It's astounding to see in person. He is so talented because Madge fits right in with my cheetah bathroom.
So much snark. I think it's very well done! And I love a healthy dose of kitsch!
Very Demi Moore's apartment in "St. Elmo's Fire."
MADONNA AND BILLY IDOL...THE HOTTEST BLEACHED BLONDES OF THE DAYS!!!!! I LUV IT ALL...THANKS FOR BEING DIFFERENT AND NOT A FOLLOWER- THIS IS WHAT INSPIRERS AND STARTS TRENDS!
