Living in a city where it seems like almost anything can be delivered in short order, it's not surprising that there is a market for this to extend to cleaning. When I initially learned about the idea behind the startup Get Maid, I was skeptical. A professional cleaning service that's on demand and won't cost me a fortune?
After all, it's challenging enough finding trustworthy housekeeping services, let alone ones that are affordable and available on-demand. With tempered expectations and a heart that remained hesitantly optimistic, I fired up the Get Maid app and booked a maid...
Less than 10 minutes after making the booking request, I received a text message giving me an anticipated time of when my maid would arrive. Get Maid promises that from the time of booking that a maid will be available in less than 2 hours when using their on-demand service (they also offer the ability to book a cleaning session in the future).
In less than 2 hours as promised, Courtney of Get Maid was at my door. At $45 an hour including tax and tip the cleaning service came in at comparable to others that I have used which I typically book around a week in advance. Before beginning the clean, Courtney asked what type of clean I was looking for and created a plan to tackle my apartment. Since the service is charged hourly, I appreciated her taking the time to talk about how I wanted the time spent.
Get Maid cleaning professionals take notes after the clean so that this process can be shorter during your next cleaning even if the maid is not the same one that you had last time. Note: If you rated a maid highly after a previous clean and they are available for your next booking, Get Maid will make an effort to send you the same person. Courtney did a great job cleaning the flat and when I requested a second Get Maid cleaning session two weeks later, she was the same maid to perform the clean (she did a great job the second time around as well). After the cleaning was completed. I received a text message in which I could reply to rate the cleaning received. I also received a notification of the total time that the cleaning took and how much my card was charged.
I booked both cleaning sessions using the on-demand service via the iPhone app. Cleanings can also be booked via the Android app or the website. I found the app to be easy to use and had zero complaints. A credit card number is requested when you create your Get Maid account and is charged after the cleaning is performed. The app and site UI is clean and it's easy to get in and out without fuss which is exactly how it should be for an on-demand service.
Get Maid currently operates in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens and was created out of the desire to find a reliable person to clean an apartment. I chatted with founder Steven Gutentag about why Get Maid was started and he spoke about how challenging it was to find someone without a friend's recommendation. Add onto being able to book that person in a timely manner which is another issue altogether and he realised along with his co-founders Justin Fargione and Demetri Karagas that if they had this issue, most likely other New Yorkers did too. They are a small team and are focused on delivering high quality cleaning services both scheduled and on-demand using natural cleaning supplies and hope to expand to areas outside of those they currently serve. With friends in other cities jealous of my dishing about Get Maid, they cannot expand soon enough.
Pros: Cleaning professional available within 2 hours, cleaning supplies are provided, maid is professional.
Cons: Vacuum is not provided and service is limited to only Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.
