I'm in the middle of planning my kitchen remodel so I've been on a kitchen "kick" lately. I've been obsessed with the Big Chill retro appliances for years and now is my chance to go for the look without going over the top. While playing off of a neutral base with the cupboards and countertops, adding a pop of retro color will tell a fun, happy story in the space.
The beauty of bold enameled appliances is that they can be retro and modern. You don't necessarily need to buy vintage to be retro these day - you can get the look along with current technologies and usability - as well as accessibility, some of these are even available at Target.

Great post! I too have been a little obsessed with vintage appliances. One day I'd like to restore my great grandmother's fridge from the 1940s and turns out there are companies that specialize in this such as: http://www.antiqueappliances.com/index.htm.
If anyone knows of a similar company in Texas please tell me!
These are super fun! Not sure I could do the bright colors for the big stuff: stove, fridge, etc.
But a retro style mini-fridge for an office or basement would be the greatest thing ever!
I did see a video (wish I could remember the show) on how to paint small kitchen appliances: they did a blender in bright green! They used spray primer and paint that was designed for plastics. Not quite retro, but one way to emulate the look!
Drool. Love these, wish there were some cheaper options though!
Cute! My kitchen is pink and teal and somewhat retro-looking. I got the teal appliances from the Martha Stewart collection at Macys, and some vintage canisters in the same color. Add a pink kitchenaid mixer and voila!
I really love the look of retro fridges and stoves. I am slowly acquiring retro looking appliances. Those I can more easily afford. Especially when a friend gave me her Dualit!! And for decoration purposes only, I purchased a 1920's toaster off of etsy.com
We just had our kitchen remodeled and have red Big Chill appliances - we love them! They have yet to come out with a microwave though, so curious if anyone has found a efficient, not-huge retro-looking microwave that would complement our new look.
Those canisters are neato, reasonably priced, and I see that they come in a variety of patterns... I just wish they were airtight!
We had one of those stoves with knobs on the front growing up. My mom used to accidentally turn them on all the time when she was expecting me. ;o)
great post! If you want more retro kitchen ideas, we did a post on retro appliances here: http://bit.ly/lKiOlI
(it's been a while so some items are sold, but some great ones are still available)
