Households with men and children should beware using products that have lavender in them, including any soap, fragrance or cleaning product, as lavender has a chemical in it that mimics estrogen. I've read in the NY Times and elsewhere that this can hasten the onset of puberty for girls and cause female secondary sex characteristics for boys (like breast buds). Do use with caution. Hm, I hope this doesn't sound alarmist. Perhaps stick to using the color lavender?

@Yulia's Special Place - The article makes it clear that it only affects children, not adults. And it goes both ways for girls and boys, too. You shouldn't have too much estrogen. And I think in order for lavender to have any adverse health effects, a person would have to use it constantly. I don't see a problem with keeping lavender soap as long as children didn't use it.
Lavender is also an aphrodisiac scent for males (esp mixed with vanilla!). Maybe we should all use it in our homes more often ;)
