The great thing about modular shelving is that, no matter what your special design challenges, you can make it work for you. Whether you're taking it to the ceiling, like in the photo above, or designing a low rise shelving unit, here are five modular shelving unit options to consider.
• Module R stocks the DLP Cubitec Shelving, which is taken to great heights in Mike's Maculine Vintage Loft above.
• ModMobili is the US retailer for the BrickBox modular shelving system.
• Way Basics offers storage cubes that be stacked and configured.
• Unica Home stocks the colorful Obo Stackable Asymmetrical Shelving, the Bouroullec Cloud Shelving System (not shown), among others.
• IKEA of course offers the ever popular EXPEDIT Shelving Unit. Although it's not made of separate cubes, we think it could very well be the World's Most Popular Bookcase.

Like the idea-preferred the shelving with the open backs.
That first photo looks like a deathtrap.
@clarkent11 is right. I was interested in those shelves but was told that there is NO way to secure them when stacked tall. Way too dangerous.
You could anchor them at multiple points. Besides it's not over a bed where it might take you a few seconds to realize you were having an earthquake. I live in California and I'd totally take my chances with shelves that tall for all that storage.
I hope Mike doesn't invite any kids over.
I'm wondering why install a $1,000 tower of plastic cubes that can't be painted and will eventually discolor or crack, instead of more environmentally sound and flexible shelving.
It's 100% recyclable (#5 PP). They make paints that will adhere to plastic, though it interferes with the ability to recycle the product. Depending on the specific formulation, polypropylene is usually selected for flexible or repetitive-stress applications, like hinges and flexible lids.
Also; @Taureg, you can secure almost anything to a wall.
I know the module R is expensive but it looks far cheaper than the expedit.
