Q: I love this mustard-colored peony wallpaper from Anthropologie...but not the $150 per roll price tag. How would you recreate this paper or this look on a budget? This is going on a section of wall over (and wrapping around the sides of) a protruding fireplace. Or, since it's a relatively small area, is there a website that sells wallpaper remnants where I could find this for less?

stencil...there are millions of patterns on the internet, or several stencil companies that will do custom...check out patterns at Modello, they're fabulous
Another option is to use fabric rather than paper. Here's one upbeat yellow to consider,

I can't believe this....I also LOVE this wallpaper/ bold floral look but can not justify paying that price. I also need it for a small wall that has a window in the center instead of a fireplace. I have thought about painting the wall to match the mustard color and then free hand drawing the huge flowers before filling them in with white. Buying the paper is easy but expensive and the DIY option is cheap but far from simple...keep me posted on your decision :)
Hmmm... I would scan the image into photoshop and save it as a picture...then rent or borrow a projector and stencil it on the wall -- paint by number. We did this in my son's room with some images of Tony Hawk, put them into four color and spent the weekend sketching/painting...turned out very cool.
Perhaps you could find a similar pattern/print which has a free vector file, print out a number of high resolution colour copies on high quality paper, and use a sealant/podge to create a sheen over top?
There are tons of stencils like that on etsy. Try this one, for example:

Here's another one from the same etsy shop, which may be closer to what you're looking for:

Be sure to look through Lowe's allen + roth patterns. They have a few stunning patterns and between $20-$50 a roll!

Here's a stencil kit -- you can make the elements all the same color for an effect like the wallpaper you like: http://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/flower-stencil-kit.html?category_id=1012
here's another from cutting edge stencil's etsy shop (as opposed to the retail website): http://www.etsy.com/listing/61038388/wall-stencil-peony-allover-floral
My teenage daughter begged to have this wallpaper in her bedroom so I broke down and bought it for her birthday--we papered one wall and the other three walls are a creamy white. It is the most gorgeous wallpaper--even more beautiful in person. Absolutely stunning, everyone loves it. Expensive but has a major wow factor.
Judy42, I wish i can see the room!
You could borrow the trading spaces idea and project that onto a wall before painting it. Easier than free handing it for sure, and I bet you could find an old projector at Goodwills or the Salvation Army for a few dollars.
I Am so excited by the cutting edge stencil website...such a great alternative...thanks everyone!
I agree with Judy - if you have a small space it might be worth saving up for the real thing and getting the full impact.
Projecting it is a great idea for sure. we've done it before, works great, and (given that you'll find a projector somewhere) it's free compared to all other methods.
Just a general FYI for the projector suggestions - the surest way to find a projector is to ask at church. I know we have four in our resource room, gathering dust, that only get broken out for painting vacation bible school scenes.
Also - this is one of my top ten favorite papers ever. Wish I had thought of stenciling my dresser fronts!
I LOVE Anthropologie's wallpaper! One caught my eye: C'est Magnifiuqe. While not all patterns are also sold by someone else, I know this one is! It is York's BL0436 and in the wallpaper book, Tres Chic. Disount Wallcovering sells it for $50.00 a roll, compared to Anthro's $88.00. Still $$, but at least a little less. Hope that helps! :) Now just to find someone to hang it.. !
