Q: We have a room in our new place that has terrible carpet with plywood underneath. It's an old building with exposed wood ceilings and beams so we don't love the idea of laminate and just can't quite afford hardwood right now.
A look we both love is painted white floors like the photo I've attached. Is there an affordable way to achieving this? I assume most of the examples I've been seeing are existing floors painted, but I would love to find an alternative. We have around 220sq feet and a budget under $800.

Shaw's Original Fir...
is it correct to assume the ply subfloor is made of sheets, and you like the rhythum of the painted strip flooring in the photo?
if so, one option is to replace subfloor you have now with T&G plywood floor boards which are inexpensive, and will give you that look once painted thoroughly.
You have to scroll down a bit but there is a great walkthrough of the process using plywood on frugal farmhouse design blog.

My painted plywood floor can be seen on my "good question" here.
My plywood is more than 50 yrs old, tattered, and full of knots. I used regular wood filler in some places (wish I'd used it to plug more of the holes), and just rolled on the painted. I've heard you can use a dremel to etch lines simulating wide planks.
I love my plywood floor, and it gets lots of complements. And so economical! I used an exterior grade latex porch paint, then sealed it with polyurethane (stinky - use lots of ventillation).
How about beaded board? It cost $20 for 4'x8 sheet the last time I checked (for a kitchen reno). Can you lay that on a floor?
[scoring ply sheets is tricky since its made of thin layers compressed together, unlike solid wood or mdf, it tends to splinter, etc.
beadboard might be too thin and need gluing down and could be a nightmare over time!]
your budget is really low-even for ply or particle board T&G boards-you can get cork for around $3/sf if you're willing to do the work of install?
If you are going to paint, might as well paint the plank lines on as well. Figure out how wide and long, mark them off and go for it on top of the painted floor.
Danica--Wow! Thanks for the link. We have nice 50 year old oak floors in part of our bedroom, but where previous owners added on, the floor is 25 year old carpet over wavy plywood. We've been stuck trying to figure out a nice looking, cost effective, non-carpet option. This looks promising.
I've seen a similar look achieved with used scaffolding planks, which I've heard can be obtained very cheaply.
But the plywood idea from Frugal Farmhouse is genius.
u might not be into laminate but lumber liquidators has hand scaped laminate for less than 1/2 regular wood and oh wow does it look real n good $2.69.sqft http://www.lumberliquidators.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=6881&categoryId=500§ionId=473&subCategoryId=705
I once used deck paint on a plywood floor. It works fine in a space that's either rustic or industrial-loft, but might look bad in a suburban-style house.
I love it too and I even loved the before! LOL! You did a marvelous
job on that table and I, along with all the other commenters,
love the card catalog. You got some great deals too...you're a savvy shopper!
Keep up the good work! Thanks for all the inspiration.

I'm in love with this great solution but here what about low VOC paints? I have too babies in crawling mode. Any ones what kind of paint is best?
