My mom recently
told me that my dad described me as “a good gift giver.” I think I’ve been
trying to make up for a pair of hunter green Gap pants that I gave him in the
early ’90s (he’s more of a denim man). Since then, I’ve gifted him a juicer,
which he loved until he admitted it was too hard to clean; an iPod for his
classic rock favorites; a frozen meat delivery service; an electric toothbrush;
and a mug featuring photos from his 60th birthday cruise (“the best
time of my life,” he said).
My dad won’t go
for the hipster fare most Father’s Day gift lists feature these days (what’s
with all the paperweights?), so I thought I’d make a list of gifts for your
old-school dad. If he’s anything like mine, he knows obscure sports and history
facts, plays cards and chess, loves his car, likes to cook, and watches a lot
of daytime court shows.
Here are my
thoughts for this year.
1. Ballpark Blueprints
2. Vacu Vin Instant Marinator
3. Tube Wringer
4. Modern Chess Set (For mid-century modern that' a bit pricey, see the Naef board: pieces and board)
5. Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Speaker and Dock
6. Wireless TV Headphones
7. The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns DVD
8. And the winner
is…American Experience: Mt. Rushmore DVD (this is the next place my dad wants to visit).
What will you be getting your dad this year?
