I get an aching back and arms just from painting a ceiling in one solid color. I can't imagine how it'd feel to paint one in a gingham pattern. However, the results look worth it:
Really, though, it seems these examples are either wallpapered (as in the second image) or painted on canvas which is then applied to the ceiling (as we read was done in the first image).
While gingham is usually country and a little dowdy, put it on the ceiling in a vibrant shade and it's suddenly a fresh pop - perfect for spring! What do you think?

Shaw's Original Fir...
I think it only works if you have a high ceiling...i can't imagine having this ceiling in my house even though I love the idea and looks on these pictures.
I share the same opinion with MonicaK. This wouldn't work with a low ceiling. You would feel being crushed and oppressed, I think.
Removing wallpaper from a wall is miserable---I can't imagine trying to scrape it off ceiling.
Whenever I think that the wallpaper trend is cool, I flash back to removing it from every room in a house we bought years ago.
I'm sure you could do it nicely using stencils. Gingham or some other cool, continuous pattern.
I think you might be able to get away with it even with a lower ceiling if the kitchen is really bright and you have white cabinets, and maybe white walls to, as in the first pic with just the Island, ceiling and accents in a vibrant color.
I think this looks tacky and visually oppressive.
Visually oppressive? Not for me... I love it, especially the first one!
Gingham wouldn't work in my rooms, plus I wouldn't put red on a ceiling in any pattern. That said, the treatments look good in those rooms. The concept could be used with any number of patterns in a variety of looks. You'd probably have to repaint it to something more mainstream before selling your home to get a higher price. That's fine if you don't mind painting.
I think it'd make me dizzy, but I LOVE the island on the first photo.
noooo..... i'd feel like i was living in a doll's house... or was trapped in raggedy-andy's shirt pocket. Might make for a good kids' show set decor?
Not my favorite look, but it seems like it could be painted on pretty easily- paint the light color, tape off a grid pattern, paint the dark color, peel tape?

Nita - Have you actually painted a ceiling yourself?
It's hard enough doing a solid color - I couldn't imagine trying to tape off an entire ceiling without using scaffolding or stilts and getting the lines even, much less well-adhered to prevent bleeding beneath the tape lines...
...which is why none of these are taped & painted.
I've done a gingham-painted floor, and let me tell you, it was no picnic! Painting a gingham ceiling would be a nightmare. Definitely, adhering a painted canvas "ceiling cloth" would be much easier.
I can see the owner growing VERY tired of that apple green kitchen VERY quickly. Imagine looking at that ceiling every day. Yikes!
I think it looks super cute!
I actually like gingham in certain contexts but "No, A Thousand Times No" to this
@bepsf- I have painted a ceiling and done taping for a friend's (illadvised) plaid design on a wall, but luckily have never had to combine the two experiences!
