As savvy and responsible consumers, we should all aspire to decorate with things that won't be out of style in 6 months. But are hot patterns like gingham and plaid too classic to be dismissed as a fad?
Gingham can sometimes come across as too sweet or rustic, but these images show that it has a distinctly sophisticated side, which makes me feel better about wearing my gingham blouse in a non-picnic setting.
So consider the images and weigh in: are gingham and plaid trendy? Or timeless?

I don't know, I like plaid, but I come from a family where we often joke "plaid is my favorite color" so I may not be the best to ask.
Unlike the Caped Chameleon, I can do plaid. Gingham on the other hand...
I think both gingham and plaid are kind of too traditional for my taste for interiors. To me they border on stodgy. I know gingham can have that funky retro feel but to me it's just too June Cleaver. Doesn't match our otherwise more modern/transitional aesthetic at all.
This actually gives me some much needed nursery inspiration! I am building an atomic/robot nursery for my son due in July, and those gingham curtains would be perfect!
I prefer the last picture..
Plaid and gingham used like that would quickly look dated and odd, which may not be a problem if the people who live there like them. I prefer paisley, stripe, solid, chevron, geometric, abstract, animal print--even floral or polka dot--to plaid or gingham patterns.
I associate plaid furniture with frathouses and ugly smelly sofas sold on Craigslist.
Ace Hotel in New York has nailed the plaid trend in a very trendy way:

I hope it's not just a trend as I seem to have invested in a number of gingham and plaid shirts over the last year or two!!
I think the plaids and ginghams above are kitschy and classy and current.
I don't know many who would agree (including my husband), so I'm not about to "go there" in my own house.
A decade or two ago we were seeing grand traditional florals with a bit of plaid or stripe thrown in, and I liked that just as much. But the same story....
Not many people are going to get it and, who knows, how long it will remain upscale and fresh?
It's a definite "can't do it" for my little family.
I need to skip the plaid personally. Too many years of wearing a uniform kilt to school! Gingham in small doses can be cute. I wasn't a fan of the wallpaper though.
surely its a home decor trend if a cast member of Gossip Girl is wearing it.
I don't mind a cute guy in a plaid shirt, but apart from that... NO. I don't know why, it's not like I ever had to wear a school uniform, but I still hate both plaid & gingham with a passion.
Plaid and gingham are totally traditional, how can they be a fad? It all depends on the use. The comfy chair by the fire and blanket across the bed will always be classic. The suit, I'm already over it!
Plaid and chesterfields are classic, but they're trending big time right now and it's only a matter of time until over-saturation. If you want to indulge in a trend, get a cool duvet cover, window treatments, or other accents (not furniture upholstery).
I love 3 and 7, but I think that's because they are understated. I think all the others are too "look at me!" for my my taste.. And I consider myself fairly traditional.. I do think it is a classic more than a trend though - when it's done tastefully.
I really love gingham! Especially large scale and in bold or mixed with bold colors. It can leave the country and go Scandinavian or modern. Check out our modern design finds with it http://artofthespa.net/archives/6489
