What do you think of this DIY Roman shade by Amanda Carver? Despite my preference for a brighter color scheme, Amanda has created a chic, stripey shade for a nursery with one quick pane of fabric and some hot glue.

Don't be afraid to make your own shades and curtains out of fabric and a simple straight stitch (or hot glue in Amanda's case). Ikea has some great textiles by the yard that can help you create unique window treatments without breaking the bank. I personally am taken with the green and white Sofia stripe!

This looks interesting, but I can only see photos on Amanda's blog of the finished product. No details about the process. What is the fabric glued to?
Yeah, this looks cute in the room but I'm not seeing how this is a roman shade as opposed to just a piece of fabric hung in the window.
Zinnia - I had the same comment. Good(ish) pics and stuff, but no process.
Can anyone identify the fabric that is being used to make the canopy over the crib? I want it!
What deelw said.
Faux roman shade. ;)
Shouldn't a shade go up and down?
boy is AT's content going downhill. DIY on how to hang some fabric....
It's a faux roman shade because it's really a curtain. Here's a link to a REAL roman shade with instructions: http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2009/02/make-shades-out-of-mini-blinds.html
not a roman shade, not even a faux roman shade - that would be fixed in the up position.
If this was a post on a color scheme then the writer's preference should be included...but since this is a post on a window covering, why bother including that? Seems like a backhanded dig, something that appears on this site way too often lately.
Things hanging over cribs make me nervous. Even fabric, knowing what they've drilled in my head about SIDS. But there's a bumper in there so I guess that's not a concern.
Is this yellow and navy or yellow and black? I personally kind of LIKE the color scheme even though I can't figure out what it is.
And srlsy on the hot glue? Because it's THAT hard to do a straight stitch, even by hand?
Is this Rosemary's baby's nursery?
I would not choose those colors for my baby's nursery..but it is very unique. I hope the glues to make the fabric are healthy and non toxic. That has been my objection to look for toxic free products since I became pregnant.
Making a roman shade is too easy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJGdLU3v2cI

I'm getting really tired of these posts of unsafe and dangerous nurseries. Stop showing cribs with bumpers in them ... they are unsafe and can cause death to babies/children. Ditto things like the fabric over a crib that a child standing in the crib can reach and potentially pull down and suffocate in.
And you all should hope that's not a real roman shade in the window ... as roman shades have cords inside that children can and do end up inadvertantly hanging themselves with. Some roman shades have been recalled due to such deaths.
Apartment therapy - pay attention!!! This is not rocket science. The guidelines are clearly stated in many places for safety of babies and toddlers. You are not doing your readership any favours by continually ignoring basic safe practices in your posts of unsafe nurseries. In fact, it appears that you are reckless with the lives of children by posting these unsafe ideas for others to follow.
Thanks for posting about our daughter's nursery. I see lots of thoughts on how these are not "faux" roman shades as I said they were in the title of the post..faux..meaninng.. artificial, immitation or fake. They are meant to looks like roman shades, but not acutally function as such. While there are ceartinly more/ creative ways to go about the process, for what we needed they are perfect. Thanks for your thoughts!
Amanda, I think it's the way AT wrote about it that most of us were quibbling with. It's great to make your own window treatments from fabric that you like, and great that you found an easy way to do it.
textiles, I completely agree - I cringe every time I see a crib all done up full of dangerous stuff. And they pop up all the time here.
