Escapes: Glamping

While our recent post on stylish camping may have been somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it turns out not to be so far from reality. According to a June story on Nightline, the new way to camp is to go "glamping." Glamorous camping.

At Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in British Columbia, that means "Five-star food and beverage service, world-class amenities, sumptuous interiors, and super natural adventure." And "Adirondack-style beds with luxuriant down duvets. Remote-controlled propane wood stoves, antique dressers and tea tables, opulent rugs, oil lamps, heirloom china and silver accessories, and an abundance of candles."

So much for musty old sleeping bags and yummy S'mores.

No way, the Weasley tent smelt of cats!

Yeah it puts my REI tent to shame too, but I think I prefer my little tent. I enjoy the whole process of cooking over the campfire, having to haul in all of my water, eating all of my meals out of my one little bowl, etc.

Ooh the idea of "an abundance of candles" in a tent, even one like that, just makes me think that they will be followed up by an abundance of wildfires. But that's just because I'm from the west coast.

My mother always says her idea of "camping" is the Holiday Inn at the edge of town. I'll have to let her know she has a new alternative!

This is so 1920s! In the very earliest edition of Emily Post's Etiquette, there's a chapter on camping that appears in none of the later revisions... it includes an entire drama about how the fussy wealthy and their even fussier butler learned to relax through "roughing it" at a luxury Adirondack resort.
