Globes: 10 New Takes On An Old Favorite

The humble globe has become a ubiquitous object in home decor over the last few years, and it's not hard to understand why. A schoolroom standby, the globe is the ultimate symbol of wanderlust...

Who among us hasn't closed their eyes, spun the globe, picked a random spot on the map and tried to imagine what it would be like to go there?

Love it or (hate it? tired of it?), this is one trend that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Here, we look beyond the usual suspects to see how this classroom icon is being reimagined yet again...

1. The delightfully oversized scale of this globe, a vintage find, adds drama to this space by Precious McBane in a way that no mere schoolhouse aid could. Via Houzz

2. Crafted of bamboo, this globe by kristoffer zeuthen is designed to foster respect and appreciation for our planet. Doubling as a lamp, it glows softly from within when lit. (Via designboom.)

3. Another over-sized globe, in black, adds celestial elegance to the Parisian foyer of a former editor for French Vogue. Shelter magazine via Martha Moments.

4. Putting a spin on the idea that a neighborhood can be one's whole world, this globe captures the sights and streets of New York City. To DIY something similar, visit Make Your Own Neighborhood Globe. Image from Little Green Notebook.

5. This isn't the first time we've seen a chalkboard globe, but this one has an especially lovely vintage feel. Notice the way the monochromatic, unadorned sphere really emphasizes the brass-detailed stand. To make one yourself, visit Make This: Blackboard Idea GlobeEtsy shop Blue Bell Bazaar, via Design Sponge.

6. Edgier than a traditional globe, this bronze version from Etsy shop Fairyhome uses antiqued nail heads to designate the world's continents.

7. The clear globe light is a modern classic. But this one puts the emphasis on globe by peeling the stickers off a flea market find and exposing the bulb. Bravo! From Trendenser.

8. Country outlines are hand-painted onto a sphere of bone to create this simple and sophisticated globe. From One Kings Lane.

9. It's the minty hue of this modern-style globe from Design Within Reach that really sets it apart.

10. Not really a globe per se, this magic lantern slide box from Etsy shop Fotolyte features the reproduction image of a 1492 globe.
