We're in the height of summer vacation time, but not everyone has the time or money to take a trip across the globe. If you're itching to satisfy your wanderlust, or even just get a taste of the jet-setting lifestyle, take a look at these amazing upcycled furniture pieces, made of discarded luggage.
Capetown-based designer and artist, Katie Thompson of Recreate, uses found objects to create a stunning line of recycled furniture. Shown here, an old suitcase is reenvisioned as a charming (and worldly!) lounge. Be sure to take a look at her redesigned, found object lighting and interior accessories as well.

Take a look at some of the furniture artist on Etsy as well. You'll find a lot of recycled furniture and found objects made into furniture as well. (I'm such an artist on Etsy!).
saw this same idea on a show called "Trash to Treasure". I miss that show...
Anyone else getting a coffin-like vibe, or is it just me?
Ugh, it's a shame that the locks are on the same half of the suitcase as the handle. How do you not hit your legs on them every time you sit down? I would probably remove them, but leave the handle.
I stand corrected..."From Junky to Funky" on DIY Network. It is inspiring.
ouch! need to remove hinges!
Or you can turn the locks sideways.
I love the idea of recycling stuff, like the suitcase,ect.. I would love to own the chair shown in my home!

I always try not to post negative comments but really, AT? You couldn't draw the line at tufted suitcase chair?
Oh come off your high horse. . .did you not see how many people above you loved the piece? This is not called "Cindy44Apartment Therapy" after all.
Kudos for an interesting idea!
Supet cute.
This piece particularly looks as a statement piece in some haute couture environment. It is extremely weird but even more weird is the fact that is undeniably pleasing to the eye.
It sort of looks like a monster puppet about to eat anyone sitting on it or a popped corn suitcase kernel.
I am not a fan-way too twee for me.
Looks uncomfortable.
That is so clever. AT should host contests consisting of re-purposing items like this, letting the readers vote on the best. Pick an easily attained item (like a piece of thrift store luggage!) and ask readers to make something great out of it while keeping the integrity of the item. ReadyMade magazine (RIP) used to do something like this.

what a great chair. i love and want it
LOL @ wistfuldreamer
@wistfuldreamer-
you're right. how dare i question a tufted suitcase chair.
I like it. I am important.
@ Cindy44 -
It wasn't that you questioned the chair but the snide manner in which you did it. This is supposed to be an open forum on design and DIY - if you don't like it then a comment such as cakegirl's is more effective than attacking the site and poster. Someone worked hard on that.
i dream of doing something like this. inspiring :)
love it - would be awesome in a metro vacation rental.
