I've noticed that the no-rug look is popular in Europe, where the floors are often made of beautiful wood, sometimes in parquet patterns — with floors like that, why cover them up? But as we can see here, a floor doesn't need the perfect patina to look good naked.
Do you like this bare-floor look, or do you think these rooms are missing something?

Shaw's Original Fir...
I like it.
No area rug in my living/family room either. It’s a small, odd shaped room so a rug may accentuate its awkwardness and limitation. Besides, I want to show off my beautiful dark hardwood floor.
I like it too. Sometimes it's only practical in detached homes though, because condo / HOA by-laws or apt. leases can require a certain percentage of floor to be covered by a rug for sound-dampening purposes. 75-80%, usually.
taking up rugs in the spring and summer lightens and freshens the room
I like the look, we have rugs because we have small dogs that like to play and wrestle and don't do it on the hardwood (I don't blame them) but too many accidents on their play area have me thinking that I am going to take them up and do away. This was great inspiration. I hope the downstairs neighbors don't mind!
I love the look of all these rooms.
I have tile floors, and no rugs in any of my rooms. One less thing to attract dog hair, one less thing to clean!
I love a rich rug for pattern and color, but it's not a requirement. I don't have a rug in my dining room because my table is too large for the space and I thought I rug would emphasize the problem.
I like the look - except does this mean that you are wearing shoes in the house? that I don't like...
Oh, Thank you for this! I just rolled up my living room rug yesterday due to damage caused by my puppy. At least I got a blog post out of it -- now an Editor's Pick on Open Salon. http://open.salon.com/blog/judith_a_ross/2011/04/19/stuff_to_keep
I have hardwoods throughout my apt. and enjoy the rugless look in summer. A couple of drawbacks to this style are that it changes the "sound" in your house (more hollow) and doesn't dampen any noises from my shoes or the neighbour's stereo. I also find myself wearing house-specific shoes because the floors are so cold on my tootsies. It's easy cleaning with a Swiffer, tho, so there's a tradeoff.
this makes me feel great because although i've found many great rugs in my search, i haven't found $300+ to buy them. my floors are mostly naked and i'm learning to love it!
If going rugless is in vogue, then I'm all for it. Like Bandita, I don't really want to shell for the right one, and all the ones I can afford are just ugly. My goodness, that room in the last picture is awesome!
I love rolling up the rugs for the summer, going bare!
Our neighbors must have read this post because it's obvious they don't have rugs covering their wood floors.
Since they re-did their floors and got rid of the rugs (can't hide the floors!), we can hear every step they take and every word they speak. Yeah, like Phil Collins...only in our building.
Thanks.
I'd love to go rugless, but I like the way rugs separate different spaces and soften the edges of a room. Also, the way they tie the room together.
Sidenote: My roommate's midwife definitely has a bumper sticker that says "That rug really tied the room together, man."
Think about it.
I like rugs in the winter, it feels warmer and cozier. But as soon as the weather warms up they all go into storage. I like the lightness of no rugs in the summer and the cool wood floors just feel better.
Although rugs can look good .. as has been mentioned, it's an extra cost and frankly I get the creepys from imagining what is in them. No matter how clean a person is, after pulling up carpet (which I always do after buying a new place) there is always a spot somewhere and I imagine it's the same with area rugs. Ew.
But those are beautiful floors. It's a-whole-nother thing when you have standard-issue parquet. Rental nude-floor chic? I think not!
You may be right in principle, but not a single one of the scenes in those photos wouldn't be improved by adding the right area rug. They all seem to have that just-moved-in look.
not for apartment dwellers, there are building rules and neighbors to consider. you wouldn't want bare floors and heavy footed neighbors upstairs from you.
The rooms are all beautiful but it's worth noting that with the exception of the last pic, they also all appear to be huge rooms. A small rugless space is often just unfinished and loud. :-(
Where I live, there is a lot of dust that comes in from outside so a rug just becomes a dust collecter, a pain in the you know what. I'm allergy prone and living with rugs or fabric upholstered seating is nearly impossible. The only rug in my house is under the desk area (to prevent the chair wheels from scratching the hardwood).
agree with cremedela. a colorful rug would add so much... life to these beige rooms.
I too keep looking at rugs for my space because "they" say rugs pull together the room, define the space, etc, but I've resisted so far due to the cleaning factor. My concrete floors are soooo easy to clean without anything in the way. I do with the people upstairs from me had a few more rugs though to cut down on the noise (no one below me -- just the building garage).
This post makes me so jealous; the house we are renting is fully carpeted and I HATE the carpet. In the past when we've has wood floors or pergo we always go without rugs; so much easier to clean, and I as an asthmatic allergy sufferer it makes a lot of sense. Not to mention the number my small children do on said rugs.
Sigh... it's a problem. SO MUCH dust & cat hair, yet rugless is loud, un-cozy, & feels unfinished.
The wood in #3 is textured enough that it seems sort of carpet-ish; yet all those cracks probably hold as much dust as a rug!
I'm experimenting with a combo of possible solutions: subfloor heat, a roomba (iRobot vacuum), and washable rugs.
PS, painted-on rugs might help solve the aesthetic dilemma (but not the coldness/hardness/loudness) but I've always been reluctant. I've seen ones that look good in photos but don't believe they'd look anything but tacky in real life. Anyone?
Even if I wanted a rug on our wood floor, I can't, because we have radiant heated floor, so no cold feet for us.
The Police.
mmm... depends, but I think you need a rug when you have multiple pieces of furniture or else it looks pretty disjointed like furniture islands. love the colors in pic 3, but would prefer a rug to define the space (room vs. walkway). love the round bench in pic 1 and no rug needed!
I see this as a seasonal thing. No rugs n summer feel light and carefree. But living in WI, in the winter, rugs (and pillows, and throws and textiles of all sorts) help to feel warm and cozy during the long dark winter.
yeah not loving this... they look undone to me.. and while still wonderful spaces... (and appreciate the images) there is just something about a rug that grounds and pulls spaces together.
Sring is definatelly arrived.. I think it is time to take out my grey rug as well.. vive léte ;)
I went rugless for awhile, but I have a great dane who hates walking on floors without rugs or carpet. Rugs went down for her. It's softer on my bare feet too which also helps.
PLEASE: If you have dogs and rent, put down rugs. Listening to scampering feet in play from below is torturous and not conducive to friendly neighbor relations.
Thank you, @TurkeyLurk. That "I hope the neighbors don't mind" comment left a bad taste. Because what will happen if the neighbors DO mind? They'll be considered the bad guys. THEY, not the ones being inconsiderate.
Our (detatched) home has hardwood throughout. The only rugs we have are one rug in the living room and a couple of small ones at kitchen work stations. We love the look and feel of the hardwood; the easy cleaning (especially with a large dog and toddler) and dust-free environment; and having beautiful floors for "free".
It can be a little chilly and slippery in socks, so we have house slippers.
One thing is for sure... you need beautiful floors to pull this off
