We'd originally bookmarked this image for the mushroom paint when we were helping a friend choose hallway colours. But when we went back to it, what struck us most were the bin pulls. Gold's an unusual choice for fixtures in a kitchen.
Stainless and chrome have been the fixture finishes of choice for the kitchen for like ever but we wouldn't be surprised to see, with a rise of gold accessories in fashion, a move to gold in the kitchen. We're not talking about the ornate gold faucets of bad gangster movies and lottery winners but something sleek, trim, clean and contemporary. What do you think? Would you consider gold accessories in the kitchen?

ooooh. I painted by cabinets gray and debated for months on whether to go with gold or brushed nickel hardware. I couldn't find an affordable kitchen faucet that i liked in gold so I went with brushed nickel. Now I see they actually work quite well. Loooove this kitchen. Very much what I imagined my kitchen turning out like.
Those bin pulls and the light fixture aren't Gold - they're Brass.
Brass hardware and lighting fixtures were quite popular in the late 1960's and into the 1980's - tho it was commonly mixed with chrome faucets as you can see in the photo above.
I love this comb with the grey, white and gold. Gold works well with shades of robin's egg blue and other shade of turquoise.
Jeeze, someone has a lot of wine glasses!
Bepsf is right--they're polished brass, not gold, a look that always screams 80s to me, but I guess it could work.
Real gold plate would tarnish, and solid gold is too soft for such a use, unless you're Marie Antoinette playing chef.

Gold doesn't tarnish unless it's under 14 karat (14/24ths) - and then it's the other metals (nickel or copper) that the gold is mixed with that's tarnishing, not the gold itself.
Brass is another story - this is why it's typically either polished and lacquered or plated with chrome.
The historic Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, Minn. features a gold sink (not sure how many carats). The family installed it so the "servants" would make less noise when washing the dishes.
(Glad to see bepsf is back, this blog was getting a little ho-hum.)
My RV has 'brass' accents that I consider to be gold. They are u-g-l-y.
When I get to the decoration portion of my great big makeover, I'll be using Rustoleum paint to turn as much of the brassy gold into oil rubbed bronze. I built some new cabinets and found the same brassy gold hinges at Home Depot as what's used now, but I decided to go with same style, better colour, and bought the oil rubbed bronze so I'll have fewer hinges to paint later.
The first cosmetic change I made to the RV was to get rid of the brass pulls that would reflect light and blind me and I recently did away with a brass-framed mirror (t-a-c-k-y).
Now, if there was only a way to de-brass my shower enclosure...
Nope. Brass is not my thing. (I do like gold leafed picture frames and things, but I can use those with my brushed nickle anyhow, no problem.)
I think gold/gold tone hardware always looks so much warmer than chrome. It depends on the rest of the room, but I tend to prefer it.
We've been in an era of stainless and brushed nickel, and it looks like the pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction towards polished brass. I'm not liking it very much yet. It reminds me of a certain TV network that covers their sets with tons of gold to show class which only comes across as tacky as well as some of my older relatives that had gold-toned everything.
I'm hoping oil rubbed bronze will be the more popular choice. It plays nicely with modern as well as transitional decor.
Personally, I find that brass is beautiful so long as it is unvarnished.
And yes, I am familiar with the upkeep issues, as we had it in one of our houses. However, I researched all the best methods (turtle wax worked great!), and had a great system, so did not find it very onerous. I always find that lacquered brass looks cheap and loud, and very '80s, but unvarnished brass has a warm, soft glow.
Whether it's brass or gold, it's gold COLORED and I love it. It looks clean and modern to me and has a real warmth. Great choice!
