We are a two person/one cat household and we like small spaces, so we've spent a lot of time in units and apartments. Most recently we have been renting a half a house. It's physically one complete house with a dividing wall down the middle. Each side is self contained but when people come to visit they are surprised by the proximity of our neighbours. I love it, but apparently not everyone is willing to share so much of their personal space.
We have a shared front and back yard, a shared deck that is separated by lattice, and a shared clothes line with separate amenities, laundry and services.
Personally I really enjoy the feeling of community that develops through living closely with your neighbours, but so many people prefer a big physical space between them and the nearest house.
How close could you live to your neighbour?
