Hello AT,

My husband and I are going to be moving soon and I would like to paint the walls before we even move the furniture to the new apartment. The rest of the house is going to be pretty easy, but he and I are both on a standstill on what to paint our living room that would actually match our couch (I HATE the couch, but buying new ones is out of the question right now). I was thinking MAYBE a dusty green color, but then again, I don't want it to look like perpetual Christmas in there. He thinks maybe tan, but that to me is just wussing out, since everyone I know seems to have brown or tan living rooms right now. Any color suggestions?

Dear Shara,

It think you're on track with a green color, though I would shy away from too light of a dusty green. What could be striking is a very dark, rich, almost-black green like Benjamin Moore "Rainy Afternoon" or "Dakota Shadow". Then paint any trim a crisp white and accessorize with neutrals that leave the color to your couch. If you invest in a new couch in the future, it could be a striking crimson or fuschia color or even bright turquoise, as I think either would look great against your almost-black green walls. Or you could slipcover your couch and paint your new place with your future couch in mind.

Other suggestions, anyone?
