Good Question: What Stroller Was That?

Christina sent an email to ask: I've noticed some moms/nannies pushing around strollers that have a nice FLAT basket at the bottom. A basket that would hold all sorts of packages, or even a small lazy dog. (The Bugaboo basket seems kind of useless to me). Today one passed me by, and while I could catch a glimpse of the logo, I couldn't read the brand. I think it started with a 'c'. Definately european. Any ideas what it is? Or who else might make a similar stroller?

Your description of the stroller with the flat basket makes us think it's the Bumbleride Queen B (pictured). The Queen B stroller has a spacious flat basket at the bottom. We agree with you - line the basket with a blanket for a small lazy dog. It's about $429 and has an optional bassinet for younger babies available. For a list of retailers, click here.

As for the Bugaboo basket, we actually really like it. It's bigger than it looks because the top is a sack with a drawstring closure. It's perfect for groceries, blankets, purse, Sunday paper, etc.

Does anyone else have any idea which stroller Christina is referring to?

I've seen a number of European strollers with a flat basket, and so think it could be anything.

But back to the Bugaboo ('cos this misconception bugs me!) -- I have been using our Frog since 2003, and it is amazing what the compartment can hold. Just yesterday, I came back with this from the grocery store, all stashed in what you refer to as the "useless" basket: 4 1 litre bottles of juice, 1 500 ml bottle of syrup, 2 punts strawberries, an anorak, diaperbag, umbrella, 2 large tubs of yogurt, 3 rectungular boxes of baby cereal, and 1 cylindrical container of baby cereal (each approx 1litre of volume). Oh! And forgot to mention that there was a bag of tomatoes too... With the soft sides and the drawstrings, you can get a lot more in there than flat bottom baskets, as things often topple or fall our of the latter... The only thing I have not been able to stash underneath is a fully-packed (for 2 kids), i.e., overstuffed, bugaboo diaperbag which is designed to hang on the handlebar anyway...

It sounds like either a Bumbleride Queeen B http://www.bumbleride.com/collection2007/queenb.php or a Bertini Bidwell http://www.bertinistrollers.com/products.htm if it was a new stroller. There are also some older European models with the flat, metal baskets such as the Inglesina Magnum; some of these can still be found online.

Sorry Janie, you are thinking of the Maclaren strollers. I LOVE my Maclaren stroller because it can go anywhere without running others off a sidewalk but the "basket" is totally useless. I can't put my purse in it. But that's ok, I sacrifice basket space for utility on the Metro and sidewalk.

Huh? Christina wanted to know about a flat-basketed stroller and I suggested that it was the Queen B. I don't believe Maclarens have flat-bottom baskets. Christina also questioned the utility of the Bugaboo basket, and I commented that it was actually very useful.

Thanks for letting us know about Maclarens though!
