In Germany I used to shop with an expandable plastic fish-net shopping bag. They cost about $2 each. They would expand as you put your groceries in the bags and they had a handle made thicker and wider so as not to hurt your hands when lugging groceries home. It's a great idea for "going green." It sounds like you might be referring to this expandable string net bag from Germany. It's made of twined cotton thread covered with paraffin wax. It was originally a Bauhaus solution that Marcel Breuer used in his B33 swing chair. And you're right — it holds a ton of groceries, folds down into nothing, and has a nifty handle to keep your hands from falling off.
