Apartment Therapy reader Katie needs help coordinating chairs with her newly created Chesterfield:
Q - I've been reading daily, and wanted to pose a question to the group. I recently scored a CL sleeper sofa that I had reupholstered to look like a Chesterfield couch- they shaved down the hump in the back, covered it in velvet, and added buttons...

Now I have a sleeper Chesterfield! My question is this: I've also gotten these club chairs, and plan on having them reupholstered as well. I don't want to do the same color as the couch, but I would like to set up some three point seating, and make them look like they belong together. I was thinking a mousy or cocoa brown. I LOVE Jeremy's Tinseltown Time Capsule, and all things Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, 1930's/1940's. I would love some feedback- Thanks!"
A - Katie: First we would like to know a lot more about your fabulous sofa conversion- we love your new Chesterfield! As for the chairs, the current ivory color looks wonderful to us with the sofa, and they certainly look like they belong together. We also think a soft blue or green would be a lovely combo with the sofa depending on your overall decor.
Any additional suggestions readers? If so, post them below!

Nomade Express Slee...
I agree-- light blue or pistachio would be excellent, as you can see with your throw pillows.
Tell us more about the sofa! Did you do any of the work yourself, and if you hired it out, mind sharing the cost?
It's beautiful!
The current color of the chairs is fine, but an eggplant color also would be nice.
I agree with Colleen, the ivory goes very well with the chocolate brown, it looks like the chairs might need some cleaning though. Absolutely love the makeover on the couch!
I think coral would look nice with the chocolate. Something similar to the sofa in the link below.

Wow, your transformation of that sofa is amazing!
I actually think that the chairs are okay as they are now, and if you put throw cushions in shades of chocolate brown on the chairs, and shades of cream on the sofa I think you would tie them together as a "set".
However I also think a rasberry colour would look be great on those chairs and would work with the brown of the couch - and again I think you should use throw cushions to link the chairs to the sofa.
i'm impressed! i would like to know more about the reupholstery. did you have somebody do it for you? (and if you're in dc, who did you use and would you recommend? do we have a list of dc upholsterers yet?)
as for color, it looks like the current color is good (unless the fabric has stains or something that we can't see). otherwise, i vote for another shade of brown. but that's only b/c i'm wussy when it comes to committing to colored upholstery. also like the suggestions of raspberry or coral, though, if you're feeling bold. and of course pillows to tie it all together :)
The sofa makeover is genius! Chairs would be nice in anything you like that is not brown or a dark color.
Your sofa is absolutely fantastic! What a great find. You picked a "pseudo" neutral for your sofa so you really have the freedom to do just about any color on the chairs. The coral or the blue would be beautiful. You could even do a floral or a mini print. Just don't do any sort of a geometric pattern (stripe, plaid) because it will get distorted by the tufting.
Yellow! I think that yellow chairs would look fantastic with this brown sofa and provide a lovely contrast to the blues already highlighted in your room.
i think leather would look really nice....something off white maybe?
I love what you've done with the couch, great vision.
the chairs, a metallic darker grey? a suede lighter brown?
Or, if you want that contrast then don't be wishy washy with a mid blue, go coral-or ecru with the brown velvet on the back / outside.
That's an amazing transformation of the couch. Stylish AND practical.
On my screen, the chairs have kinda of a greenish-yellow tinge, which is warring with the chocolate, red and blue you already have. For longevity, I'd go with a cream upholstery fabric and unify the seating with colorful pillows or throws. If your major pieces are neutral, you have more options if you want to change color schemes later on.
I agree with those who have suggested cream or a warm, bright color. I was going to say go for red, orange or pink - the earlier suggestions of raspberry or coral are excellent.
Oh and DO stick with velvet!!
Gorgeous sofa! For a real regency vibe, I'd go for a pastel-hued satin upholstery (cream, mint, ice blue, peach, lavender, Jayne Mansfield pink...). Mirrored coffee table is optional to play up the glam factor.
That having been said, velvet or mohair would work well, too. But I'd stay away from the chocolate or brown family, unless you have some huge pop of color elsewhere in the room that we aren't seeing.
While the current upholstery is ok, the contrast with your light-colored walls is a tad boring. I'd suggest a camel or tan color. Keeping it neutral will make the chairs easier to work into a different decor or to sell, should you decide to change your decor in the future. A pop of color like coral would be a great contrast to the deep brown of your sofa, but will eventually look dated and make the chairs more difficult to transition to a new look.
Love the sofa!
The chairs look good with the sofa right now. Perhaps you could get accent pillows for them that are either brown or have brown and blue in them to tie it together more as set. Though if you want a change, I like the pistachio green suggestion, with ivory pillows. I have dark brown, light green and blue and ivory in my living room and it works perfectly. Calm but not bland.
Katie here! Just wanted to write in and say thanks for all the recommendations and tell you about the sofa transormation!
I hate being told no. I've always wanted a Chesterfield couch, but needed a place for family and friends to stay when they visit. I spent the better part of a month going to furniture stores and looking on ebay and CL for a tolerable couch here in Savannah (i hate microfiber), and was actually told by a sofa salesman when asking about 40s style couches that "you're just not going to get that look in a sleeper, and not for under $1200." Hmm. If you can't find what you want, make it, right?
I got the sleeper sofa off CL, and ordered the fabric online for about and had some local upholsterers (R&R Upholstery in Savannah, Ga- 912-665-0991) do the work for me. They did all the work- they flattened out the camel back on the sofa, made fabric covered buttons, and added panels to the front of the arms. I found a picture of a Chesterfield sans tufting and brought it in to them, and they used it as their guide- they were VERY accommodating, patient, resourceful, and friendly. I didn't have a deadline to meet, so I parcelled out the purchases to make it affordable- I purchased the couch and got an estimate, then looked for the fabric online. The fabric is actually an olive green (Como olive, Housefabrics.com), but looks chocolate in the photos. I needed about 19 yards, which took a minute to find and be able to afford. Then to the upholsterer's, then home! The whole process took about a month and a half, I spent less than $1000, and I got a place for visitors to sleep and the couch I've always wanted.
P.S.- I ended up getting different chairs than the ones in the photo. They were a bit too petite for my husband, but they are a pistacio green (and need to be reupholstered), and are for sale at the vintage store where I work as of yesterday! Two Women and a Warehouse, 912-239-9665, Savannah, Ga.
Thanks everyone!
Love the sofa transformation SO MUCH. Thank you for sharing your vision and success for the Chesterfieldization. Inspiring.
Also? If I worked in a vintage store, or a hardware store, I'd never bring home a paycheck, only beautiful, useful things. Congratulations!
Hi,
I have just sent a container full of chesterfield sofas back to the UK from China. But there are 4 sofas that are the wrong colours. The material is all PU leather. If we send you these 4 sofas, are you able to re-upholster them with the right colours?
If so, please tell me how much this would cost. There are 2 x 13foot sofas, and 2 x 3 seaters. 1 of each in Shiny gold, and the other of each in shiny silver. Please let me know if you can help with this.
Thanks, Sam Lutostanski
