Local cabinet maker?

Isn't this one of the classic situations that calls for turning an IKEA Expedit or Lack on its side? $80 either way.

Easier said than done, and it depends on your building.

Becky I am in a similar situation and have been looking for someone to find or make geometric bookshelves/storage for me. I kinda of like the Expedit bookcase by IKEA but I want wood. I also lovelovelove the Room and Board Network and Kiva bookshelves but they are out of my price range. Similarly, the Door Store has Domino shelves that I like and which might work for you as well. The Domino Shelves arent as expensive as Desiron stuff but still seem steep to me or melamin coated MDF http://www.plushpod.com/item_882.php. Yesterday I stumbled upon this place in Brooklyn that sells bookshelves in standard sizes made of untreated pine and some other materials. They can custom make the bookshelves as well. The place is called Trade Winds Imports( dont have a website though). They got some low rating for customer service on citysearch so I am still debating but it might be worth checking out. The prices are quite reasonable IMO.

When I needed something similar a few years back, I had it custom-made by a local cabinet/bookshelf maker - the pricing was totally reasonable, the quality is good, and it's so, so nice to have something that fits the space perfectly, rather than having to work with a manufacturer's specs. The only problem is that when I move, I'll probably need to donate it somewhere!

Blu Dot's Chicago Low Boy is about the same width and depth but a bit taller. Could be an option depending on the height of your windows.

You could go to one of those unpainted furniture places and have them make you a custom bookcase. It'll be stronger and cheaper than most furniture chains (& you can get exactly what you want).

Maurizio Peregalli does a similar shelf in black phosphatized steel for about $500 less than Desiron. I've seen them in person and the finish has a really subtle patina. Looks terrific. Its part of his Irony collection. You can find pictures at themagazine.info (just put "irony" into the search box and you should find the entire collection.)

I just have to ask this - if you've been looking for months I'd love to know WHERE you looked because I will put those places in my "favorites". They are obviously places that I would never have thought of. My first search would have been IKEA and West Elm. What were your first searches?
