Q: My name is Wendy and my family lives in Alexandria, VA. We bought our house a year ago and since then we've been busy trying to make it feel like home. Our latest project is our daughter's bedroom and I feel like we are almost there, except we appear to be stuck on the bedding... So right now is just a lavender blanket with white sheets. Can you offer any suggestions as far as colors, patterns or textures?

Editor: Wendy- what a great room! We love the accent wall and think the room can definitely grow with your daughter. We love to see a quilt or coverlet on the bed, preferably a big puffy comforter in this weather! You don't mention her age, but we assume the twin bed is a sign she is younger; if you do invest in a high quality comforter, consider buying a bigger size so you can continue to use it even is she transitions to a larger bed in the future. With your current colors, we like the following patterns:
- Wildflower or Tropical Punch organic duvets from PBTeen
- La Fleure Boheme from Land of Nod
- Xhilaration Floral from Target
Readers, what do you think?

Personally, I like the simplicity of what you already have. The room is really pretty and has so much pattern and texture as it is. However, for additional warmth a full size down comforter would be great, then you can cover it with a duvet of your choice, and kind of fold it down at the foot of bed, and add maybe one pretty coordinating throw pillow.
Absolutely beautiful room. I'm in love with this quilt from Garnet Hill:

Might be too adult for a child's room, but certainly goes with your current decor.
i completely agree. consider getting a solid pin stitched blanket from pb. or something textural to the touch but solid in terms of pattern. you could do anything from lavendar to a sage green to bring out the green in the painting...
I used Unison bedding for my little girls room. She loves it. check it out here:

oh that quilt is BEAUTIFUL and timeless. will last a lifetime. get the quilt from GH
I agree with arcamp83. That is exactly what I've done for my daughter's bedroom. I purchased a quality oversized goosedown comforter. Make sure it's light in color and weight. I purchased 2 different duvet's from PBteen that have the same colors not the same pattern so that we could alternate if we want a change. I also purchased some throw pillows with designs my daughter picked out herself from Justice for Girls which were a less expensive than PBTeen. One word of advice though, just make sure that the comforter size and duvet size match. If the comforter is off by 1" each side it's fine but if there's a bigger difference it will not look well. I've done that and learned the hard way. Good Luck and have fun!
You have a beautiful guide with the painting over the bed. Pull your colors from there. I would do green and red and white and pink sheets, bottom sheet one color, top sheet one color, pillow case one color, with a blanket another color. If that is too much for you, do a set of sheets in one of the colors, and use a blanket from another color in the picture.
A painting is an excellent way to set a palate of colors for a room. Light green sheets with a white blanket would be a light quiet compliment.
The gray blanket has to go. It has no connection to the room.
I agree with arcamp83, the simplicity of the room with the bold accent wall and drapes is nice. If you want to add a little more color without loosing the overall simplicity you might try some patterned sheets or a solid fitted and patterned top sheet. Here's a couple of cute ideas:

I would seriously consider going with black and white. Counter-intuitive perhaps, but might add the level of chic-ness you seem to be going for. Just an example:

A simple cream quilt, perhaps with a textured design like a fleur-de-lys, would balance out the bold pink and chocolate colour scheme. This could be complimented with a pink fitted sheet (or white with a pink floral pattern).
Much as I like the Garnet Hill quilt from the second comment, it may make the whole pink and chocolate thing overwhelming.
White chenille or white matelasse.

The blanket is lavender.
I would say nothing floral and nothing pink. Maybe something simple but feminine like this ruffled bedspread from UO. It only comes in queen size though, so maybe this one from Brocade Home. Pretty!
Kids tend to sit on their beds, which is not good for down comforters. I'd get a synthetic comforter and put a flannel duvet on it because it will feel cozy.
Great bedroom. I love that the room is young but not childish. I also like the sophistication and femininity,
without being overly so.
Because everything other than the picture is solid colored,
I prefer a print rather than a solid comforter.
I like the idea of keeping with the floral theme of the picture, but I also think it that if you go floral, it should mimic the type of flowers in the picture. Another type of flower, IMO, would just clash with the picture, and not look good. As far as prints, I like:

You can always add additional throw pillows in solid colors,
as well as possibly switch out the area rug for a solid colored one. Maybe a nice small white shag rug.
While I am generally a big fan of solid colour bedding (usually white), I think you *do* need colour and pattern in your daughter's room, especially if she is still young. Hard to tell how old she may be, but I think what is making you uncomfortable about her room is that while very attractive, it is too tailored and too old for her. It needs to be a little more playful...
Me, I am a BIG fan of Dutch design, especially their exuberant approach to kid rooms -- fun, without being childish. Dutch designers tend to be very eclectic, drawing in influences from all over the world (their maritime and trade background I guess).
Right now, I am in love with the bedding by PIP Studio out of the Netherlands. (my husband doesn't know it yet, but I am going to be getting some for our own daughter next week...). I know that Decor8 has blogged about them a couple of times, and their bedding was featured in a post on AT and is in the current (January 2010) issue of Living Etc.
This is the bedding in question:

http://www.pipstudio.com/nl/bedtextiel/dekbedovertrekken/chinese-rose-18
I think their Chinese-themed bedding will work nicely with the rug with flowering branches at the foot of the bed, and will lighten-up the room. Get a nice fluffy duvet with the duvet covers (much easier to make the bed that way for a little girl), some contrasting and clashing pillows, and there you have it.
You can buy it online on their website, and there are other online retailers as well. Not sure if any bricks and mortar stores stock it in the US; I am lucky, as a local department store here does, and so have seen it in person -- it is much, much more beautiful and fun in person than online.
Good luck!
p.s. In order for the room to feel less formal and staid, avoid coordinating all the colours, avoid using the painting to guide your colour choices too much...
I think subconsciously you sense it and are already on that track with your choice of a lavender blanket (which is a lovely colour to introduce into the mix). Similarly, don't try to mimic the flowers in the painting -- the effect will be too stilted.
I'm with the rest - I'm going to guess the girl is younger. I'd do a full size quilt over the bed in a design that would be used when she is older and a nice coordinating pillow sham. Then she could use hot pink or lavender sheets and if she outgrows the color, you can switch out sheets cheaper than blankets. It looks like she prefers two pillows by the picture - maybe add one throw pillow just for propping up to read or whatnot.
Thanks so much for your suggestions!! My daughter is 3 years old.
These are all very helpful ideas and while before I was drawing blank, now I'll have a hard time choosing from all the beautiful choices listed here!
I love what you have already. However, if you're looking for something with more of a pattern, why not try the DwellStudio for Target line? The bedding is attractive and reasonable. I'm not sure about the quality, but it can't be so bad. I have a few throw pillows from the line, and adore them!
This is a gorgeous room!
Take a look at PBteen.com (Pottery Barn Teen). They have a of number of duvets matching your color scheme. The brown & pink dot to dot is cute with a white coverlet.
Went with white and a lime green throw.
Thank you so much!!
