Q: I've been trying to figure out what would be the best window treatment for this wall of windows. Ideally I would love to have a floor to ceiling sheer curtain, but it's not possible because the heater and AC unit (not in place currently) protrude out of the wall up to 11". Any ideas?

Depending on how far the AC protrudes from the wall, you could install a rod from wall to wall just a few inches out from the window so the sheers can flow down to the floor, creating a draped vestibule in front of the entire wall of door and windows.
Use Ceiling mounted curtain tracks and place them about 13" away from the wall. That way you'll be able to have your floor to ceiling look and not interfere with the AC heater unit.
How about you treat the window and door separately?
Have a rollerblind or venetian blinds for the window, and some frosted film for the door.
I would also create a radiator that covers the entire wall under the window.
I agree with webherring -- it would look much more sleek if you did a built-in under the whole window area, to hide the radiator and AC unit.
I agree with the first two comments and would add this: Make (or have made) drapes that are sheer above but opaque below, up to the height of the AC/heating unit. That way you'll camouflage the hardware but still let the light in.
If you *need* the heat from the heater you can't install curtains in front of it. Presumably it's the same problem with the AC unit?
I think I would find a simple roller blind for the window section and a single floor-length curtain in the same colour for the door. If you want a sense of symmetry you could add another floor-length curtain to the right but just keep it open at all times. If possible I would make a full-sized boxy cover thingy to hide both the AC unit and the heater.
I am in a situation a lot like you. What I am going to do is put white roller blinds on each window then cover them with bright red sheer curtains that fall to the floor. The rest of my house is neutral so it will add a pop of color.
I agree with webherring. You could do sheers on the window and frosted treatment on the door. A built in under the window are would be nice and it would give you a surface to put plants or flowers on.
Or use something like this for the window, this adds a nice architectural element to the room and gives a beautiful defused natural light into the room-

Try treating the door separately fromt the window.
Door: anything from a dense bead curtain to t&b's to frosting or painting.
The turn a couch around and cover the air conditioner and heart, keeping the couch a reasonable distance from them to allow circulation.
Then you could do sheers or curtains or a combination of both down to the window sill.
I can't really see what is on the other side of the door, but you might consider putting a tall plant screen about three feet out from it and leaving it clear to make the room seem a little larger.
That's "Then turn a couch around to cover the A/C and heater..."
Sorry.
- oops! I meant to say "radiator cover under the entire window" but it seems everybody understood me anyway. :)
@LoriSF....what a fabulous link!
Something like the Delia shades on the window and the door would be great....maybe perfect...for a great cohesive look.
I'm not crazy about treating the door and windows as two separate entities....and I'm not crazy about blocking the heating/cooling system with a sofa.
The Delia shades along with webherring's suggestion of a radiator cover to cover the heater and air conditioner while still allowing the air to come through and circulate.....while the top could then be used as a window sill of sorts...a place to display some things...photos, ceramics, flowers....
a winning combination IMO.
I would suggest fabric roman blinds hung at the ceiling so as to clear the door. They are height adjustable in how far they go down and can be made at home if you have sewing skills. I have made them before. It was fussy but relatively easy. Good luck and let us know what you decide. Hopefully with photos!
This is my question also!! I can't wait to figure out how to solve this problem....ahh city in window heaters!!!
Thanks for the post.
I like the idea of a radiator cover too. You can paint it a similar shade to the window treatment to give it an illusion of floor to ceiling drapes. And I also like the idea of frosted film for the door.
I have a similar situation, but with a beam on the ceiling that sticks out about 8 inches. I put a frosted film on the door and bought wire and turnbuckles for a curtain rod to go across the entire wall in front of the beam. I'm going to use Ikea's Jorun Slinga curtains which are sheer enough to let light in, but the pattern will provide some privacy.
I like this site, maybe something will inspire you:

I have the same setup, except there are 2 sliding glass doors instead of the one that opens up. I used comcgeeks idea. I installed ceiling mounted rods approximately 12" from the window and hung my drapes from there. The rods were on sale from JCPenney. Here they are:
http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?ItemTyp=G&itemID=1553539&GrpTyp=STY&ShowMenu=T&ShopBy=0&SearchString=ceiling mounted rods&RefPage=SearchDepartment.aspx&s4PageSize=15&CmCatId=searchresults&Search1Prod=True
They are unobtrusive and not really noticable at all. The result is an uninterrupted flow of drapes. Since they are not right next to the AC unit, the air is still able to circulate through the room and cool it off.
Good luck
