Hello AT,
I wonder if you or your readers can recommend some comparatively inexpensive places in NYC to host visiting family.
My fiancé and I are getting married in the city next summer, so our family, about 16 people in all, will be visiting for the week to prepare and celebrate...
Link To All Good Questions
Since they will have kids in tow and will be staying for a while, they’d rather have apartment-like accommodations rather than tiny hotel rooms. And they’d rather not spend thousands of dollars in the process.
While they're not the Plaza, I’ve looked into places like the Abingdon Guest House and the Second Home on Second Avenue, as well as Abode NYC and Furnished Quarters. Does anyone have any experience with these places or places like these?
Thanks! Katherine

I've had friends use Abode and it was really nice. It's not cheap but many of the apartments have additional sleeping space. It might be a 2 bedroom but with an additional 2 sleeper sofas, so in reality an apartment could sleep 8. It is worth looking into.
The Unitarian Church on 35th street and Madison owns a bunch of brownstones on that street and they do rent the apartments out. They are huge, if a bit old fashioned, but clean and in a great location. Very "old New York". And they were pretty cheap. We rented about 8 apartments for our families when they came to town for our wedding (and we didn't get married at the Church and neither of us have any affiliation with the Church.)
The Chelsmore Apartments (www.chelsmore.com) on 15th St and 7th Ave has studios and 1-bedrooms for short term rentals ($120-$150 a night). I know people who have stayed there and said it was nice and clean--and you can't beat the location!
I'm getting married next October and will have the same family situation... anyone have similar accommodation suggestions for a Brooklyn wedding?
We want to keep out-of-towners close to us and the venue (Montauk Club, Park Slope/Prospect Heights) to minimize transportation costs and confusion, and we don't want them to have to break the bank.
there are some big victorians in ditmas park/old midwood (brooklyn) that are B&Bs, maybe something can be arranged in advance. http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/brooklyn-new-york.html
The Chelsea Marriot Execustay on 24th at 7th Ave.
My family stayed there in a two bedroom. Although the lobby has nothing the rooms are big, clean and comfortable for those not used to NYC.
Has a kitchen and dining room - can't beat the location.
Look on Craigslist. My family and I have rented several apartments through Craigslist with very successful results. You just have to be discerning and make sure you get everything in writing. Also, some colleges/universities have classified sections in the back of their alumni magazines where alumn offer their homes for rent around the country.
For the brooklyn couple- we used the new hotel on Union bt 3/4th Aves- Best Western Express- something like that.
It was totally fine.
My friend rented out the fancy B&B on PPW- pricey and a little difficult
I would suggest if you want apartment like situations- craigslist
Re: "They’d rather have apartment-like accommodations rather than tiny hotel rooms."
Wouldn't we all.
I say, give 'em the REAL NY experience and cram them into 200 square feet. ;)
The good news is you will have more choices and cheaper rates in Summer, in general, so don't rule out what you consider too-pricey a hotel. Many have special summer rates.
My sister was here for a month over the summer and stayed at a Furnished Quarters brownstone 1-bedroom apartment (no doorman but with elevator). She was surprised at how small the apartment was (she called it a shoebox) even though I warned her about NY real estate. The apartment looked like it was furnished with IKEA products. The kitchen and bathroom looked newly renovated. The sheets were clean, the towels fluffy enough and someone would come once in a while to clean. She was generally happy with their service. It's definitely not luxurious. It's more spartan. But after a month, she was ready to get out of there.
This may be more uptown than you were planning, but recently I contacted the Country Inn the City on the Upper West Side to host a family member who decided to come last minute to NYC. I spoke with Fergus the owner who was very accomodating in terms of negotiating a last minute deal for me (I literally called the same day).
My point is, the accomodations look beautiful online and the location is nice for visitors given the park nearby and you won't have to worry about setting them up with furniture or food bc it's a B&B.
Here's a link to their site

(Please note, this is an unsolicited recommendation)
I would suggest calling to see about a group rate for your family members. Unfortunately NY lodging can get expensive but given everything else you'll be juggling with the wedding, you may want them to be as well off in their options as possible.
Best wishes and congratulations!
Thanks everyone for the helpful hints.
A craigslist search turned up several listings on VRBO.com which look promising. I'll also be looking into several of the other suggestions.
Furnished Quarters is VERY expensive. I got married in Prospect Park and guests stayed at the Brooklyn Marriott, which was much cheaper than anything in Manhattan and they gave us a group rate. We arranged for guests' transportation to the wedding. I have checked out the Chelsea Marriott Execustay in the past, and my understanding is that they are for long-term stays only. Not a weekend.
Hi, I got married last May and did lots of research into this very problem. Lodging in NYC, any boro, is quite tricky. Hardly any hotels are willing to block off rooms at a discount because they don't need to. We put family up in both the Brooklyn Marriot and Holiday Inn Express. Wasn't much of a price difference in the end. There are also a few B&Bs in Brooklyn worth noting , both cheap and pricey. (Sorry this will be a long post):

When my sister brought her son here to NYC while a friend of hers brought her son, who was the same age as hers, my sister and my nephew stayed with me, but the other pair stayed at the Quality Inn on 94th and Broadway, and they seemed quite happy there.
They either didn't find it small, or they had low enough expectations of square footage for Manhattan or they knew they wouldn't spend much time in the room, since I was perfectly willing to show them around everywhere.
Anyway, they didn't complain at all about their room, and I have to say that I think the lobby there, where we met them several times, looks quite decent.
Yes craigslist is a very good source for accomodations, I used them several times and all with very good results. Weddings are beautiful, I hope you have a wonderful time.
