It makes more sense as a sideboard. As a dresser, it won't hold a lot of clothes.

You're both right, use it however you want. But lower the artwork if that's where the buffet/dresser is going to live -- waaay too high. If you're worried about the lamp blocking the painting, switch out the lamp.

It's definitely a dresser but could go in either location. I guess it comes down to what you want to put in it.

I think you and I might have the same husband. He'd say exactly the same thing: it's a dresser, therefore it CANNOT be in the dining room, even if it fits the dining room decor and provides the type of storage we need in the dining room, if it's a dresser, it MUST be in the bedroom (even if we don't need a dresser in the bedroom).

It has more of a feel of a sideboard. It looks more like one with the big drawers in the middle and the smaller on the side.

But to be honest, are you really planning to show this to your hubby and say hey these people agree with me?

It looks like it was designed to primarily be a dresser but I think that it can be used as a sideboard as well. It's a wonderful looking piece of furniture no matter what you end up using it for.

On the other hand, couldn't you just picture it in the dining room with a cute Martini set on it? Ohhh, no help!

I have a feeling my boyfriend and I are going to be having this exact same debate soon enough-- as I've been on the hunt for a piece like this to use as a credenza in the living room for his huge tv! I am inclined to consider sawing off the front of a drawer or all of the drawers so that you have a great sliding shelf. This way it functions easily and doesn't look as though it HAS to be in the bedroom. I'm sure you'll figure out a way to use it, wherever you need it!

Your husband needs to step outside the box! My dining room sideboard is exactly the same thing: a dresser. I no longer wanted it in my bedroom because the deep drawers were a pain for clothes organization, but realized it would work perfectly in my dining room and it has. And it looks great and provides lots of storage for things like table linens that I'm not rifling through every day and thus don't have to worry about getting disorganized. Moral of the story, use it wherever you need it; it will look great in either room!

I love the painting with the "sideboard". I think it will be perfect to hold tablecloths, napkins, silverware, candles, etc.

Sideboard. For napkins, place mats, cutlery, etc. Insufficient dresser drawers and the legs make it a sideboard (for me, at least!)

I kind of looks like a dresser but look at the depth of the drawers and it's overall design, it's more of a sideboard/credenda than a true dresser IMO and in this case, it looks great right where it is.

As had already been said, no hard and fast rules. I have a smaller 4 drawer chest I use by my front door as a landing strip and i use it to store kitchen linens and placemats etc in as the entry is rignt into the dining area w/ the kitchen on the other side, opposite the front door so it works great right there.

If you keep things as they are, I'd definitely lower the painting and perhaps put a shorter lamp to not block so much of that wonder piece of artwork which works great w/ the piece.

In my neck of the woods, bedrooms are far to small to contain such a dresser, especially one with so few drawers per square centimeter of floorspace. (Few people have dressers at all, just floor to ceiling built in wardrobes. Off season clothes are placed above 1.8 m - 6 feet)
It is a lovely peice and seems to be in good shape. BTW, the painting is lovely too, and the matching widths are more than a coincidence.

i have something very very similar which was originally a sideboard and part of a dining set i purchase. However, now I dont have the rest of the set and use it as a dresser, and it works great. So i would say it could do either, but originally was probably a buffet table/side board

It certainly looks like a dresser. And it certainly does not look out of place used as a sideboard. Like others have said, it's a beautiful piece, so why stick to rules?

However, if one of you is in need of a dresser, then the insistence is a lot more understandable.

Either. I have a blonde wood MC chest with two small upper drawers and six larger below (4 next to 4). It has been used as both in several rentals but probably more as a sideboard. Mine has legs but I don't agree that legs eliminate it originally being sold as a dresser.

You can use it as you wish, but sideboards have doors, with shelves beyond, for storing serving dishes. they also have drawers for linens and flatware.

It is whatever you use it as. Chop it up and call it firewood. Put a TV on it and it is an entertainment unit. Just use it wherever it looks best, serves its function, and you need the storage.

I use a sideboard as a dresser and it makes the best dresser ever because it has cabinets as well as drawers. No one has ever asked me why I use a sideboard because it fits seamlessly with the rest of the room. In fact, I also use kitchen cabinets as wardrobe storage and media drawers as nightstands. The label a company slaps on a piece of furniture is merely a marketing suggestion, nothing more. It is free to be anything your imagination allows it to be.

The bigger question is why don't you think it belongs in the bedroom and why doesn't he think it works in the dining room. If this is really just about what its called, you are arguing about nothing of consequence.

I have a similar piece, though yours is cuter. I got it from someone who had previously used it as a buffet. Assuming that's what it was, but needing a dresser, I moved it into my bedroom. However, the drawers are really shallow, and I could never fit very much clothing in them. Now it's my buffet/sideboard again and holds napkins and tablecloths beautifully.
