Doug sent in a good question for the crowd:
Do any stores sell restaurant-style highchairs like the one pictured here but in colors such as red, blue, green, etc.?

I haven't ever seen one, but I purchased ours on ebay for a pittance and it has held up incredibly well through two children. I am all about buying day care or "professional" quality children's items now.
Is there any reason why it cannot be sanded and refinished in the color you like? If you add a coat of the polyurethane that is probably already present on any of the natural wood chairs....hmmm. I may have a project for February now!
Pottery Barn kids has them on sale now in white and espresso. White is $50.
can of paint?
The last Restaurant supply store I visited had them in light (as pictured above) and dark varnish for pretty cheap.
Should be pretty easy to paint one - just be sure to choose a child-friendly and food-surface-appropriate paint.
I agree with the comments above, try some sanding and paint. I also got one recently at a restaurant supply store. Forty bucks, all hardwood and no assembly. Plus no tacky fabric. These are easy to clean and totally the way to go. Good luck with your painting adventure!
