Q: I want to paint my bedroom! I attempted to paint the wall behind my bed, but it doesn't look right and it's too dark. I think I have to paint the walls and ceiling the same color. My living room is all white so this is my chance to use color. Any suggestions?

Editor: I've been all about pale gray lately, but this bedroom has a lot of possibilities — I don't think the ceiling and walls have to be the same color, but it would help to stay in the same color family. I like the trick of choosing a color for the walls and then using a paler color from the same sample strip for the ceiling. Who else has suggestions for Carolyn?

Wow. Surely not helpful to you, but I just love the stark white against those amazing beams!
i love the beams in your bedroom! the "random" placement. very nice. it makes me think a bit of some of the open looking moroccan wood furniture. so perhaps a dramatic color color would be nice. maybe an intense blue, similar to the jewelry box you have on the dresser. or fuschia, which i love in a bedroom. or possibly even a bottle green.
Leave it white.
What you really need is a headboard for your bed. That will make the room look more "finished."
I think, and it's only my thought, that you need to change the color of the bedding to tie in more with your grey wall and you need some bold statement on the grey wall like a headboard, the two little pictures are too small for that space. A darker grey (or grey blue) bed cover/duvet or similar with a couple cushions or fabric touches that tie the wall color to the bed color more and I think you might be on your way. I'm not convinced that the color is the problem as it looks like you have a very low ceiling and therefore a dark color on the walls will make the room seem smaller.
another here leave white such a beautiful room. I think the grey blue wall behind the bed is dragging things down a bit, paint that white and change the odd placement of the pictures. You could get a beautiful branch and mount on wall behind bed and drape a pretty pink, coral, or turquoise vintage fabric. I would add a big tall green plant in-between the windows. Maybe refinish the dresser to a darker wood finish.
Think Greek Islands go with more nubby, neutral textures on white bedding and get a better lamp next to the bed.
I think the room is wonderful its the placement and accessories that need some work.
Get rid of all the clutter....and any color you choose will look great with those beams
I would change the color of the white cabinet and doors (and future headboard) to match the beams. That will bring the eye back down to room. Otherwise, I totally dig the white ceiling and walls with the beams. :)
Atrium white or a dove grey
paperkite- yes you nailed it.
Leave it white! And maybe get some larger more colorful artwork to spruce it up. It would be such a shame to take away from those beams. Maybe hang a colorful lantern from a beam to add color too.
I love the breezy white and cream you have throughout the rest of the room: I'd stick with that...
...and get a headboard upholstered in a simple taupe or cream linen with antiqued brass nailhead trim.
This is one of the few times where I would say I think the white walls look fabulous! But if you really want color I think I lighter version of the color behind your bed would work - some sort of very light bluish-gray.
Great room!
Take the plunge and paint the entire room the color of your accent wall... then see how you feel about the color.
Then *slightly* tint the ceiling with the same color... but just barely, so it still reads like a white.
And yes, headboard is next.
Here's the one I'd pick for you:

I love the white with the beams. As paperkite suggested, you need more wood accents in the room to balance it. If you find the color of the beams too dark, go for white oak or cherry (like your dresser). I think a cherry headboard & cabinet, white walls & white bedding would look beautiful. Since there'd be a lot of white, you could use different textures (sheepskin rug or shag rug, etc).
I'm sure the bedroom will look very nice whichever direction you take (it already does!).
I agree with the white. Bring in some lovely textures with fabric to play off of the beams. Add colors with accessories and and linens.
Leave it white!
Please leave it white.
Love the white.
love the white too, beams are beautiful
but if you do paint use the gray all over, it sticks out because everything else is white, including your bedding,
have a good think about what colors and textures you like & what your style is, think of how to make the room consistent with that
If this was my bedroom, I'd decorate with color, texture pattern: Bloomsbury, Muriel Brandilino, Anthropologie catalogue, Grimm's fairytale
what do you like?
Go rent Mama Mia
No matter what you do, that is one gorgeous bedroom! If you are going for a color at all, I'd stick to something light and bright to contrast with the beams. Otherwise, I agree with above posts - keep it white, but bring in colorful accents like turqouise and orange or pink and grey.
The Greek Isle idea (perfect, LoriSF) is a great fit for this space. Paint the gray wall white and add color through pops of turquoise and sea blue using textiles and accessories. If you can't find a headboard you like, look for a large embroidered textile with bright colors--a Mexican Otomi or a suzani-ish piece would work. You can add interest through texture as well as color, even if you stick to whites and creams. You might also look for a flokati or sheepskin rug by the bed, either in white/cream or in an espresso brown that echoes the beam color. Consider painting the dresser a darker shade. Look for ways to reflect and maximize the light--mirrors will work, though the gold one you have now doesn't--you could paint the frame whatever color you choose for an accent. Consider larger, bolder artwork on the walls rather than the small pieces you're now featuring. You might also swap the bedside lamps for table lamps and put them on side tables that are either whitewashed, driftwood color or similar in color to the beams (another way to ground the room by pulling the beam color down into the space).
Your room with the beams made me think of a traditional type of houses we have in the Netherlands:

I agree with above people who advised to go with white ceilings and walls, it looks great against the dark beams. :)
TERECOTTA
I am surprised how most people have opted for white here. When I look at the room I am reminded of a cold long winter (may be its the weather:)). Anyway the color on the wall simple does not do any justice to the beautiful beams. Love the fact that they have such a rugged look. The beams, mirror, arm chair and footstool points me towards a warm color for the accent wall (I am thinking yellows and greens) and then a soft creamish color for the rest of the walls and the ceiling. Also the lamp by the bed is too white. It will look great if painted black instead.
oh PLEASE leave it white! why are people so hesitant to work with white walls? you don't HAVE to make every wall a color, you know...
it looks so crisp and elegant. I think if you painted it (especially yellow, green, or peach), it'd end up looking like a bad resort in Central America (I say that because I just went. I know.)
WHITE.

There are so many different colors of white that would beautiful. It looks as though there might be a bit of a taupe and gray undertone to the beams, so you have a lot of options, depending on whether you wanted cool tones or warm tones. You have a lot of blue accessories and a little green in the bed coverings. That leads me to think you could pull in a white that has teal or aqua undertones leaning a bit to gray. What this would do is tie in the blues and greens you have in the room together, making a very harmonious look.
I also think you need to create the look of a headboard if you can.
Maybe a light gray/green like Behr's Mountain Haze, or a light wheat-like color like Willow Herb?
I also like it just as it is.
white white white
i would stick with a white, but would choose something like ballet white or muslin. still a strong contrast with the beams but enough color to make anything true-white in your bedroom look even more so (linens basically). i agree that the furniture and headboard should be closer to the color of the beams in order to complement best and also that a decluttering would help. it's a fantastic room.
I totally agree with all the others... leave it white and add lots of bright colour with rugs, bed coverings, lamps, etc. What a gorgeous room!
This room is missing a focal point. I would leave the wall white and get a big statement headboard and some bedding to complement it. With such a plain room you can really go to town.
Then once you have the colour of the bed and headboard sorted, you can think about the wall colour to compliment it, if needs be.
However, if this is not an option I would go for a natural calming colour for the wall that seems to suit the mood of the room - blues, greens or a camel colour? And then tie in your accessories to fit.
you have such wonderful architectural layout all around... I'd seriously consider changing part of the furniture and accessories, Include big, colorful artwork, and as someone said, a big headboard... with this two items you can go wall wide without actually touching a the walls...
You can check some of the previous posts where white is the main color all around and they look modern, livable and amazing....
and for the white, just in case... i'll try to get the purest brightest one i could get... maybe a fresh hand of paint will make everything fine again....
Not quite WHITE, but more like a cream that looks white. Just too make it a bit less sterile, and bit more warm. It can make a huge difference...
leave the room white. The ceiling timbers are fantastic. Paint that brown dresser white. Get a rich red morroccan textile to cover the bed something with a bit of heft. There's your color. Get a headboard in a vibe that works with the ceiling timbers. Declutter. Don't paint the walls and ceiling gray regardless of how popular that color is.
Leave it white and play up the rest of the room with warm textures in off white, cream and tan. It will play up the rustic beams and make the room feel rich. I also agree with the rest of the comments. Get a headboard for your bed. My suggestion is a salvage door or fence.
What an awesome ceiling. I'd go with a light tan color to contrast with the dark beams and keep the ceiling white to make it pop.

Amazed at all the "keep it whites"!
You'd have to go VERY dark to lose the contrast those beams provide, so I still vote for color (if you want a color).
Personally, I love darker bedrooms. They are (to me) "nighttime rooms" and darker rooms appeal to the cave-dweller in me.
If you are still struggling for a color inspiration, I usually point clients in the direction of bedding they love, and work out from there to the paint. You can find a paint to match anything, but not necessarily the other way around.
If you are feeling very ambitious, and have not been dissuaded from painting, I'd perhaps do a layered finish, to match the age and vibe of the beams.
But I don't think the accent wall concept works in this room, and I think that's what's throwing you more than the actual color.
And I still stand by my earlier headboard suggestion. I'd go English Tavern or Alpine in this room before I went Greek.
Well, I'd go Greek in this room, but that's another post entirely.
WHITE!
Another vote for white! Remember you can work with white as well since there are so many shades of it. I'd choose a warm tone for this room to soften the overall look.
I agree with some previous person, who said that you don't always have to paint every wall, just because you can. White is very popular where I come from and I don't understand why it would be so horrible to add colour elsewhere in the home.
i love it as is. the beams stand out so dramatically. it's really beautiful!
I love the beams in your room! I would do a warmer tone on the walls. Maybe a color in terra cotta or pumpkin. Perhaps use three versions of the same color. On your accent wall where you have the bed, keep it the darkest color. The other walls, a medium, lighter version and on the ceiling the lightest hint of the color. I think that would bring out the beauty of the beams. The trim on the windows and your door I would keep white. I agree about a headboard. I think something rustic would look great with the beams...like a beautiful old door with beautifully aged wood..or maybe, cool old shutters.
Please please PLEASE keep plain white with those black beams. It's such a gorgeous contrast--the first picture looks so elegant (the second--not so much).
I agree with Paperkite's suggesgtions, and if you really want a new paint colour, how about a warmer white?
We have exactly the same type of beams in our cottage, and over the past 17 years we've experimented with lots of different colours, but ultimately we've always gone back to white. It provides such a gorgeous contrast to the deep chocolate of the beams, and looks so classic and timeless.
It's white all the way for us from now on....
While I like the suggestions of a warmer shade of white, if you want color, go for color! A nice, light, warm green (BM's "calming aloe", for example) would work well with the wood.
WHITE!
And reposition the bed to the opposite side of the room.
And do a headboard - either by painting the wall behind the bed a dramatic color, or having an actual headboard.
Leave the walls and ceiling white - paint the door blue
Donald Kaufman has the best whites... My choice would be to go with a beautiful, slightly creamy white from his palette. This sort of effect:

Right now, the accent wall doesn't work, and your white is too stark. If you get the right white, it will be stunning.
However, a colour could be gorgeous too. If you still really want to do a colour, I'd go Belgian...
Your room reminds me of an attic room inside an old cloister we stayed in when visiting Belgium. Alas, our room wasn't pictured on line, but these others will give you the general idea...
Typical Belgian colours are moody, complex neutrals... greiges, deep beiges, even dull golds...

Good luck; hope these inspire you.
I think you need to factor in the deep mahogany in the beams. Pick a color that will make the beams pop. I would suggest a color like Benjamin Moore HC63. It is a dusty rose that Thomas Jefferson used on his first floor to compliment his dark wood. The color is called Monticello Rose, and has a dark brown pigment in it that will compliment your beams. It looks amazing in candle light, which makes sense, since it was formulated before the electric light.
I say pick a light pale green or grey and get more colorful bedding. I would also get a fun headboard to make the wall behind your bed a little more fun. If that is out of your price range, try a giant poster/picture-that's what I did for my bed instead of a headboard (would have been too bulky) and it looks great!
It depends if a cold room that faces north, I would paint yellow ocher, soft, the color always works. And but soft turquoise, the color works well with wood and rustic appearance.
