Q: I've seen a lot of comments about Macy's Corona sofa, but none about the Lenny, which looks very similar to Crate & Barrel's Petrie. I'm thinking about buying one, but can't seem to find any good reviews. Does anyone know anything? Anything at all? Thanks!

Editor: Anne, I saw the Lenny in person for the first time last week at Macy's and my biggest concern was the quality/color of the upholstery and foam. The style elements are there but the crisp edges of the cushions won't last for long and the fabric is toeing the cheesy line. You can even see the edges in question in the second image — if it doesn't look perfect in the professional photo, do you think it will be better after actual use? That said, the price is kind of amazingly low — especially when you factor in all the chances for sales, discounts and the convenienve of a payment plan.
Does anyone have experience with the Lenny sofa from Macy's?

I'm getting this one. The reviews are really good and the price is fabulous. I'm sure it wont be as well made as a $2,000 couch, but for those of us who can't afford to spend $2,000 it seems like a decent option.

It would scare me to buy one without the reviews....
Anne is comparing a $699 sofa (marked down from $1099) with a $1499 sofa...
...and that $1499 sofa has mixed reviews.
There's no way on earth that the cheaper Macy's sofa is the equal of the C&B sofa.
I went to see this line at Macy's last month. The Home brand is pretty good compared to other brands carried at Macy's, like Bauhaus. The foam isn't super-high density and you can expect it to last a few years before it gets uncomfortable. The fabric was ok. I wouldn't call it cheesy compared to Ikea fabrics, for example.
If I had kids or large dogs, I'd expect this sofa to last a couple of years. I'd bring it home and scotchguard the bejeezus out of it.
A single person or couple could probably get 4 or 5 years out of it if they are gentle on furnishings. I hope this doesn't offend, but large / overweight adults or those who are rough on furniture (food, long hours doing the couch-potato thing, etc) will probably be disappointed in this sofa after a year or two of use.
The issue is that the Lenny will wear out faster than a better quality sofa, but is that ok with you because you have kids or dogs that would wear out a better sofa anyway? If your budget is tight and this needs to last you for a while, I think you should save just a little while longer and get a better sofa.
For $200 more, I'd go to Crate & Barrel and take a look at their $999 and under line. These aren't tufted, but I believe the quality would be much better. If it's the tufting that you love, check out R & Bs tufted armless sofa at the bottom of this list.
The Lenny is a good answer to really well designed, higher quality sofas if you just have to get that particular style. I don't blame you -- it was high on my list until I found a used, surprisingly clean-lined, nearly minimalist leather sofa from Thomasville on craiglist. I'm still considering the Lenny or the Corona chairs from Macy's to pair with the sofa. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=251337&CategoryID=35447

Or Room and Board has great (better, IMO) in the same price range.

I have the Crate & Barrel Petrie sofa, chair and foot stool in white, and I would have to say I do love the way they looked for the first year or so...but would not advise that you purchase them. I have had them about 3 years now and they look BAD! the bottom cushions are not at all square anymore and the fabric just attracts the dirt. I have had them professonally cleaned and that made them look worse! I am dissapointed in the fact that I spent so much money and now 3 years later they have to be recovered! If you want a white couch that has this modern look I would strongly advise leather (check out room and board and DWR)
I don't know about the Lenny, but my sofa is from Macy's and I could not be happier.
It is a tufted seat leather chaise sectional, and 4 years later, still looks brand new, is still very supportive and comfortable, and has no worn or sinking spots....(and the delivery and customer service was excellent in my experience).
I bought the Lenny sofa last month in the slate color. The deciding factor for me was comfort. I was definitely in a Wallace Shawn mood when I bought it. Of all similar styled sofas at Macy's, C&B, R&B, and CB2, the Lenny was the best for long-term sitting or lounging. It's got a lot of cush for the tush. And for the back. The fabric isn't close to luxurious but fairly smooth, unlike the nubby fabric on the Corona. The Lenny sits up high and the seat is deep, which works for me (I'm 6' tall with long legs). But I can see a shorter person not liking its height.
The durability is still in question. I figure all sofas start to slouch after a while. It gives them a lived-in look and character. So its not a big concern for me, especially knowing the sofa didnt cost an arm and a leg.
From personal experience I can tell you that the C&B Petrie sofa starts to look haggard and deflated after just a little bit of use. It looks GREAT in the stores and when you get it home, but I was surprised at how flat the cushions become after a while (and I'm not talking about flopping down on it and putting your feet up on it). You really have to put the Petrie sofa in a room that gets little or no use.
Perfect timing to ask actually!! I just went on Monday and tried out the Lenny sofa at Macy's (among others).
I've tried the Petrie sofa before which I found incredibly uncomfortable. The cushions are all so thin I felt like I was sitting on wood. It also looked kinda crappy and I don't think it being a floor model is an excuse. All the other sofas in C&B still looked nice and clean and were comfy. I was very glad I tried it out in person cuz I was very disappointed and at least it got me over my obsession with such a pricy sofa.
But the Lenny was PERFECT! It's exactly what I've been looking for. It was soooo comfy! The cushions weren't too soft or hard on the bottom or back. The couch back had a nice height. I'm one of those people who tries a couch in every position-- "chatting w/ friends" position, "lounging and watching tv" position, "nappy position". I loved it! I've tried lots of sofas, but this is the one I want. I've been searching everywhere for something that's stylish AND comfortable, because no matter how good it looks, if it's not comfy you can forget it. AND, it's on sale right now!! I don't know if it's on sale online, but in stores it's $699!!! Down from $1200 I think.
The sofa is not as bright white in person as it is in the sofa, it's more of a natural color, but I prefer that as I'm not a fan of white furniture. Unlike Aaron, I didn't think the fabric looked cheap. I thought it was a nice linen (although I really wish it came in a microfiber since I've read those are easy to clean). But the fabric was soft comfy, not cheap feeling, but not itchy either.
DukeofEarl expressed some concerns about a short person not liking the Lenny, but I'm 5'3 and I had no problem with its size.
By the way DukeofEarl, if you have some pics I'd love to see the sofa in the slate color!! I liked the light color, but I'm afraid of such a light color on a sofa.
oops napping, not nappy
I bought a sofa in 2007 from Macy's. It wasn't the Lenny (or Corona), but was a similar style. We were really disappointed by how quickly (within a year) the cushions wore out. They don't look good and they aren't comfortable. This is with only two people and a 10 lb cat sitting on them.
That said, our cat scratches the hell out of anything we buy, so I have trouble spending much on a couch. We were considering the Petrie and I'm glad we didn't shell out the money for it -- the cat doesn't care whether it cost $600 (as our Macy's couch did) or $1400.
My mom and several of my friends are very happy with their Macy's Sofa. All held up real well.
We looked @ Macys when we bought but their selection wasn't so good. Now their selection is much better, Wish we were in the market now. C & B is good not really worth the extra price though.
Bought the C&B Petrie in brown a few years ago and love it.
I did ask the salesperson about the cushions becoming flat over time, a complaint mentioned a few times here on AT, and she recommended rotating the cushions every week or so for even wear. Don't do it quite that often, but my sofa still looks great.
Wow, thanks for all the feedback! I have to say that I'm not sure what you mean by the fabric being cheesy? Maybe I would have to see it in person. The Lenny is also offered in dark gray, which I think I would prefer to the lighter color.
I'm not really trying to compare the Petrie and the Lenny in terms of quality, just cost and aesthetic. As a grad student, every $100 counts for something!
Thanks again! :)
Dearly: From what I can tell on the website, the Chloe is very pretty! I've considered buying that one too, but I'm just not too keen on the colors... if it came in gray, I would be on board!
Sorry, I have no feedback on the Lenny sofa, but I am also planning on getting the Chloe from Macy's. For the person above, it DOES come in a gray color called granite, but you have to look under the "special order colors" tab.
Yep the Chloe does come in gray. I've considered that one cuz it's so pretty and the fabric is incredibly soft. What I also love is that it comes in "Apartment Sofa" size. So hard to find an attractive affordable apartment sofa that's not too short. It's actually pretty comfy, but I'm worried I'd find it uncomfortable over the long term because of the lack of back cushions to lean into.
Need to correct my earlier post about the color of the Lenny sofa I bought. The color is "granite", not slate. It's a very warm gray. A friend who was with me at Macy's actually thought it was more brown or taupe than gray. It's not too dark and IMO is an attractive, versatile color than could work in various settings. The Chloe also comes in granite, but it looks very different from the Lenny granite, perhaps due to the difference in material (weave compared microfiber).
I've heard a lot of retailers source their furniture from the same four manufacturers in the US. The main difference is the choice of upholstery and the amount of the mark-up. Anyone else heard this?
FYI: the Chloe sofa from Macy's is made by Rowe Furniture. A little shopping around at independent furniture stores will yield better pricing and a wider selection on fabrics.
I don't want to dissuade you from buying the sofa if you love the style but you can afford a much higher quality sofa, if you're willing to shop around and be patient, I shopped retail to identify 2 different styles I'd want and then shopped alternative resources until I found 1 of the 2 styles. Ultimately I bought a ~new~ Mitchell Gold sofa for under $550 (from a firm that's in North Carolina, buys new overstock from the furniture makers, and sells on eBay) plus another $175 for delivery to California. While I coveted the sofa at Mitchell Gold I'd never have bought that model off the floor, for their retail price, now I'm beyond thrilled to have it at a fraction of the cost. From the same North Carolina buyers I purchased a Barbara Barry dining table that I'd gone nuts over in a local store (at 1/10 retail value) and a Barbara Barry bookcase (at ~1/6 retail).
I've also ordered from Sofa Craft, in L.A. (Laguna Niguel), and had great results. They have great prices and better quality than a standard retail sofa and they'll ship anywhere.
Rucy--

I have the chole in granite and LOVE it! the color is a little more purple than pictured, but it is beautifully made and very comfortable. Can't beat it for the price. Macys also has great warranty deals for spills on the couch

@stinkypants:
It's fairviewgirl, I'm done shopping so I don't mind sharing the name now, LOL. I looked and right now it's more of a mixed bag for their listings. As you probably know, on eBay and CL, it's a waiting game. With these folks if it doesn't sell the first time or two they list, they list it low to start the next time, that's when I bid and it's been a great method for me. However, there are so many selling higher end items on eBay that you should really shop by brand/designer rather than seller, so I get the best results if I identify what I want (this table or that table, this sofa or that, etc) and only after that shopping patiently for it and looking for a great deal.
I visited my local Macy's last night to check out the Lenny. I found out that this weekend the Lenny is only $599 in the store. It is a 3 day special sale. I was disappointed that they did not have a sample of the couch or fabric. I really love the look and the couch fits in my budget, so I think I will purchase it. Plus they offer the 7 year warrenty for $98.
I have been looking for a couch like this for a while. I love the mid-century modern look and most of the sofas that i have found are either out of my price range (I'm a poor grad student) or only available online (and I have a doubts about buying a couch without having seen it in person). This sofa appears to be no longer available on the Macy's website :(, does anyone know if it is also no longer available in stores? I am over an hour away from a Macy's furniture gallery and haven't had a chance to get out there to check. If this sofa is not being made anymore, I will likely be buying the Ikea Karlstad sofa in beige and changing out the feet to something more attractive.
I just picked up a floor model of the Lenny in White at a store near me. I paid $199...YES, one hundred ninety nine dollars. There is another one in graphite left, but it's at a store in California. I got lucky and for $199 if it lasts 6 months I'll be happy.
The sofa has been discontinued, definitely.
