Q: I am in desperate need for major shoe storage for my apartment. I am well past the usual 12-pair display rack that one would get at Bed, Bath & Beyond or something. I need a big mamma jamma! Ideally, I'd get the same rack that Jenna Lyons has in her closet (see picture). Any ideas where I could find something like this? Thanks!

Editor: This is an impressive closet — one well-deserved for the creative director of J.Crew. While few of us have similar storage space in New York, the shoe rack in question looks industrial and is most likely custom made, extremely expensive or both.
Thick glass shelves and extremely tall, I'd look for something similar at Two Jakes — perhaps a used Metro shelf could be a suitable alternative. Also, a customized Metro shelf is available from The Container Store — the InterMetro Line has narrow 14" deep shelves, ideal for shoes!
Who else has suggestions for Brandi?

I've been lusting after these shelves from Baileys for almost a year.

Probably too hard to get from England but soooo nice to dream about.
I sure hope Jenna Lyons doesn't expose her clothes and shoes to sunlight like that. The discolouring would be horrible.
How about this shelving system from Ikea (IVAR) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49824326
You can buy as many shelves as you like and paint the wood in any colour you like (metallic grey?)
What an amazing closet- I could live in there! Although I like the idea of crisp white shelves rather than traditional shoe racks.
A friend of mine has a similar set up (down the hall of her small apartment actually (she always says that all her crazy is right out for display) but I think she got hers from Ikea as well and mounted the shelves on a slant somehow. You should check that out because then you can make any size you want!
I'm going to print out a copy of this picture and show it to anyone who makes a snarky remark about the number of pairs of shoes I own. Nice to find out I'm still a piker!
On the cheap and easy, what about just purchasing or repurposing a big bookshelf? One with adjustable shelves?
For a gorgeous example, I am in love love LOVE with Nubby Twiglet's shoe-storage solution: http://nubbytwiglet.com/blog/2009/11/11/these-are-a-few-of-my-favorite-shoes/
Another option is to mount a pole and then get a bunch of hanging shoe organizers (I use these). That way, you can put your flats, heels, etc. in the pockets, and line your boots underneath the bags. It will protect your shoes from dust more than a shoe rack will, plus it'll probably be a lot cheaper and more portable than any giant shoe rack you find.
I have a basic Target/Walmart 4" bookshelf and added extra shelves. I got an used bookshelf for on the curb and added shelves I had lying around. I fit over 25 pairs on this thing, plus the shoes are not exposed to the sun and are out of the way.
I went to home depot, they have a cheaper version of the container stores "elfa" system. I just bought a bunch of shoe sized wire racks, with the angle brackets (so they'd be at that great angle) and I installed them all the way up my tiny closet--home depot will also custom cut the metal or wood shelves to the size you need for a small charge (.$50 or something) now I have enough room for aprox. 50 pairs of shoes. . they go all the way up to my ceiling, my friends think it looks way more expensive than it really was . . .I think I spent somewhere around $60. . .you can do it!!

That solved the organizing of my shoe addiction.
maybe two of these?

I have at least five shoe racks in all...I kind of like them spread out like that, it almost makes them part of the decor...which is good for me since I obviously love my shoes. In my old apartment we literally had a ROOM for my shoes (there were a few other things in there as well) my boyfriend used to tell everyone and laugh.
i have around 60 pairs of shoes, and i use the $30 shoe rack from the contrainer store. each rack holds 30 pairs, so i place two of them side by side, saves space and money and does the job. you could try that.
I would just buy a bookshelf. That shelf looks like it could be replicated easily by just getting one with adjustable shelves and perhaps purchasing/making extra shelves if it doesn't come with enough.
You could use a track, shelving system and then gussy it up by customizing the shelves. ANTONIUS system from IKEA is nice and you can set it to fit your space. Use IKEA's FIGGJO mirror or you could use picture frames with a thick plexi or glass or even with pictures or fabric in the frames. I think IKEA has 1' x 3' poster frame for under $10. It's easy to set you shelves at an angle using that system.
Walmart has some inexpensive solutions as well.

Go to a place that sells display racks for stores. I bought a really hefty rolling clothes rack from a retail/wholesale place in Montreal. The store also sold big shoe racks like the ones in department stores, as well as jewelry and hat/glove display furniture.
I'm sure there are several such retailers in the Garment District.
Shoegasm!

I will never understand the big deal about shoes.
There is an IKEA storage system (which I don't see online) that has silver poles that attache to ceiling and have a base on the floor. You can choose drawer components, open shelves (looks great), shelves with backs (functionally recommended) in white, black and birch. There are also show shelves you can mount flat or at angles (maybe this is what someone else referred to). You can also buy mirrors and hooks to mount on the poles.
I installed them in a bedroom - all around the perimeter and it looks fabulous (lavender walls, white shelves, silver posts and white vic trim with a huge windows ;) It look expensive shelving I've seen elsewhere, They've been up and abused and never had a problem with them at all!
good luck!

The Portis racks from IKEA are also surprisingly sturdy and cute. A little more fem than industrial look above, but a good and cheap option ($40). Sorry for mult posts, my connection's a bit wonky.
:)
I wouldn't recommend having the clothes rail in front of that sunny window, simply because I did it myself once and scorched some of my favourite clothes! Fortunately, I didn't hang everything up and I've been a cowardly wardrobe and drawer user ever since... nothing sees the sun unless it's drying on the line or being worn!
The 'shoe rack' is impressive. I could probably get most of my books on it. I would have to fill something that size with something other than footwear as shoes are not something that I collect. I was trying to think of what it reminded me of and then it came to me! ;)

May I interject some Closets 101..it would appear that this shoerack holds about 64 pair. Ladies shoes require 8"-9" of width on a shelf. With any shelf unit, allow 6"-8" of height between shelves if you are using straight shelves and 9"-11" between angled shelves. Given her ceiling height, she has a lot of wasted space- space that could be more shoes. This wall could easily hold 100 pr of shoes if it was decked with wall to wall shoe drawers(www.morestorage.com), shoecubbies(www.closets.org), shoe-eze or shelves designed specifically for shoes. This picture piques your imagination but in reality, more could be accomplished. A professional closet company would whip this into a glamour closet in no time.
I've been coveting these for a while now. They seem to only stock a few at a time and they sell out quickly. So when I have extra money they're out of stock. Not sure how sturdy they are but a few L brackets might help if needed. They hold 40 pair and are only 13.5"w x 13.5"d. I like the use of vertical space and should help with my New Year's resolution to get organized.

This one is interesting. It's two deep. Not sure if that would get annoying or not.

You have a lot of extra space. I would purchase rolling metal/wire shelving available at Home Depot or Lowes. Then inexpensive see through shoe boxes (.99 cents at Walmart) that you could stack by color, style etc. Organized clean and portable. Total cost would be about 100.00
Just use a big ol' bookcase!
