Q: My boyfriend and I have been hoping to get some ideas on what color to paint our new bedroom. Usually I'm all over the paint chips and have too many ideas, but I'm stumped on this one. My issue is: we have a "warm" wooden bed, and the DwellStudio Perch comforter set, which also has warm colors (dark reddish orange and dark brown), and very "cool" dressers and nightstand…

…The nightstand and dressers are from the Travel collection by Pagnon & Pelhaitre for Ligne Roset, and are a ribbed aluminum with milk glass tops. Oh, also, the new bedroom has hardwood floors, which adds to the warmth.
I've looked at all kinds of paint chips and can't figure out what color would best complement both the cool industrial look of the dressers and the warmth of the wood in the room and the comforter. My landlord is OK with us painting, but he did say, "Nothing too extreme." Extreme is a pretty loose definition for me. I'm taking it as, "No fuchsia or otherwise very bright and loud walls." Any neutrals, light colors, and probably most dark natural looking colors would be OK. Thanks, we'd appreciate any suggestions!

I like the grey in the first picture a lot...
I like the grey color they are now. If that's just the lighting, then I say definitely go with grey. I think the combo of your bedding, bed, and nightstands is great.
caveat: grey can have any number of undertones -- brown, green, blue, purple.... Since your bedding is in the "orange" realm, I say go with a grey that has a blue undertone. Blue and orange are complimentary colors, so they can't help but be awesome together. And grey is a wonderful neutral.

Hmm maybe a nice peach?
PS -- I just realized it's the lavender nightstands not the existing dark wood ones. I'm sorry, but the easter egg pastel doesn't work at all in my opinion. I'd keep the dark wood (walnut, ebony, black, whatever), the mid-toned bed, the fabu bedding, and skip the pastels.
I one room painted Ralph Lauren "moonlight" #TH13 neither light or dark grey and it changes all day long.
It has allowed me to change colors of the bedding everything seems to work with it except some green colors.
I too have wood floors, mixed wood furniture. You can create a warm or crisp look with this color. I went through 7 or more grey samples and this one is perfect.
I have BM Sidewalk Grey in another room, not as thrilled but it would be a good kid room color, just too slight for me.
It would work really well with your dwell set.
I use Reveal light bulbs and at night this room as such a warm beautiful glow. The moonlight color would work would well with your dwell set.
These are some picture I took for my friend who was looking for a med grey, sorry they were taken with iphone-

How about green. It's right in the middle of the warm/cool range and is a great background to all other colours (in nature, leaves go with everything). And you can go as light or as dark as you want with it.
The only thing is you might have to move that green picture (although you may not, it will probably depend on what shade you go with).
I think... and I could be very much wrong here... the first picture is a "stock" picture for that DwellStudio bedding pattern, not a picture of the actual bedroom in question. The bed photo and nightstand photo that follow appear to be the actual bed and nightstand of the sender-inner, and they are not the bed and nightstand shown in the first photo. Maybe this will clear up some confusion for posters.
I have little to offer on color choice, as I'm not that good at it myself, but I will say that I like the grey in the first picture with that bedding. I guess you'd just have to make sure it harmonizes with the metallic color of your nightstand and dresser rather than clashes by being either too-close-but-not-quite-the-same in color or totally off in the undertones from each other.
My immediate thought is something like a charcoal, but I don't know if that's classified as 'extreme' by your landlord. I think it'd make the orange in the bedspread and the natural wood really pop out, and greys always compliment more industrial furniture designs. Otherwise, I think finding the right blue would definitely work. Orange and blue are always fabulous together, and if you get something that's a little more greyed out, it'd be nice and cool for a bedroom.
You really can't go wrong with grey. If you want a soft, warm feel, I'd say go with a grey that has a warm undertone (like an elephant grey). If you you don't get too much sunlight or like a brighter, more crisp look, then go for a grey with blue undertones.
Another option is pure white. It might sound boring, but if the bedroom is small & you have enough warm elements (the floor, bed, bedding, art work, etc), I think white would look modern, but welcoming.
LoriSF, that bedroom looks really nice!
Are the grey walls in the picture the current walls in your bedroom? If so, I think they are perfect, why paint?
I'd go for a dark olive-y green. with a grey/blue base to it.
RJ here. Emmelemm, you're right, that's not my actual bedroom in the picture. I couldn't send pictures of the room since we are in transition from one place to another right now, so I sent stock photos of all the different items.
Kimg924- They're actually aluminum, not lavender, but the color of the aluminum is so light that it almost does resemble a lavender in certain lights and it's driving me up a wall. Depending on what light it's in, it can look lavender, pale blue, a regular gray, or almost white. I'm not a big fan of pastels myself. The aluminum chests and nightstands are my boyfriend's, and it is one of those awkward clashing furniture dilemmas that occurs when two cohabitating people combine two households of furniture into one, and he is VERY attached to them, so there will be no getting rid of them. I would like all wood furniture myself, but (sigh), the sacrifices you make for love. I'm just gonna have to make it work.
I really like the dark charcoal idea. The thought of doing green intrigues me too. It just couldn't be a light green. I don't know about blue- I have a light blue in my living room right now, and if i were to put the aluminum dresser in there, I know it would be too close to the aluminum color and my eyeballs would cringe. I think I'll get some several samples and experiment. I will definitely post after pictures. I hope I can find the magic color to tie it all together. And keep pitching ideas if you've got them!
I like the grey in the first picture too but I agree with idontdobeige. A nice light green would probably look really pretty too.
One of my favorite colors (and the color of my bedroom in my last apartment) was Behr's Belgian Sweet. It's a nice brown and would work well in the whole room or as an accent wall with the rest of the room painted white.
I'm liking everyone's green idea.
When I saw the bed and the stands, I also immediately thought olive green.
I'd pick a color that makes you look good, and forget worrying about the bedding or the furniture. If you'd wear a grey sweater and look luscious, then, that's the color to use. But if grey makes you look like corpse, rethink.
I only use those colors that flatter me. If I look great in the room, I'll feel comfortable. The bedspread can take care of itself.
I'm imagining a gray a bit darker than the aluminum color. Use more silvery accents to go with the aluminum, use a few red accents that match the color in the bedding (I keep seeing roses in a silver color vase, for instance). White trim. Something the color of the wood on the dresser and/or nightstand (maybe a wooden lamp base? Or a very plain wooden jewelry box?) In other words, take the major elements you have, and repeat them throughout the space, so everything ties together and doesn't seem orphaned.
I'd go with a medium dark plum. Looks rich with burnt orange or orangy reds. Jewel tone.
I have that same bedspread. I painted my walls a light, cool blue-gray color. It's very subtle but it goes so well with the comforter. I use light blue fitted sheets with it as well, so it goes along with the same theme without being matchy-matchy.
