Q: I recently moved in and want/need to redo my bedroom closet. I'm planning on doing it roughly the same as the pictured closet (although mine is a bit smaller). I have two questions: should the closet organizers be white or cherry? I would prefer cherry, but would that look OK with my dark wood furniture and gray walls? Also, since I am taking down the mirrored doors should curtains be put up or left exposed (and maybe put some wood molding around like in the picture)? Thanks!

I have white trim, molding and doors and gray walls (so pretty much just like you) and although I wanted the look of wood inside the closets my boyfriend convinced me to go white and I don't regret it. I just think it fits better with that color palette.
Ikea makes some great adjustable closet organizing systems. I typically avoid their furniture, unless you want disposable, but you can do a lot with their storage and garden items.
Cover the closet with either curtains or different doors.
Even with nice trim, why would you want to keep your clothes closet exposed....regardless of how well organized?
Your closet is a "closet", the closet you are taking your inspiration from looks to be more of a dressing room...set back a bit from the rest of the room.
Either way, I would go white.... leaves more options for color palette changes in the future....seems more "neutral".
I would recommend going with white if you wear a lot of dark colors. although cherry isn't the darkest of woods, unless your closet is lit-up like a holiday tree you're going to visually "lose" some of your clothes in the corners. white also offers a neutral backdrop for creating outfits as the tone doesn't conflict with the colors of your clothes.
in the photo above I really don't agree with having drawers front and center. usually the corners of a closet are the darkest, things get lost. haven't you ever "found" something in the back of the closet that you've forgotten that you own? it just makes sense to me to have the hanging bars in the bright spots and the drawers on either sides as they are less likely to lose stuff behind.
Kevin Sharkey had his closet makeover featured in Martha. he also posted the process on his blog. I would highly recommend checking it out for additional ideas.
I agree with everyone else, I think white would be the best choice for your color palette.
If you want to keep the mirror doors, you can update it like JoulesCharlie, who posted about using window film to update the look.
Here is a picture of her closet door, I hope this helps.

I think you should get cherry if you love cherry. Then I think you should cover it up--lol. Put a door or curtain on it.
Definitely either keep your current closet doors or get new ones/hang a curtain. Do you really want to see the inside of your closet all the time? I think it would also get dusty faster without doors.
In case you're doing this *now*, and you live near a Container Store, they're having their anual Elfa sale right now. I think all of their closet systems are something like 40% off, and they'll give you a free closet planning consultation and all that, too.
We just did our closets with Elfa components. We picked the walnut trim, but the sales person did tell us that people often find the darker wood too dark when it's in the closet, rather than in the brightly lit store. However, we like the walnut.
As to larchgirl's comment, we have our drawers in the center, with hanging bars on the side, and it's very convenient.
Definitely close off your closet! Thet closet in the photo looks great because the "owners" wear only red, white, grey, khaki, and black.
Something else that makes that closet look good is the fact that the owner only has 8 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of pants, and around 30 hangers. And it appears to be for 2 people - note man sized shoes (2 pair) and women type shoes (6 pair) ha ha ha ha! Stages closets crack me up!
Yours will look great, but unless you can space your hangers exactly 3 inches apart, it won't look quite so ... neat.
Realize you won't be able to put drawers in the center with sliding doors; they can't be opened.
I just redid my closet with Elfa. It's only on sale until the 15th, I think. I'm happy with how it turned out.
I originally had sliding doors, but I took them down with plans of installing double doors opening from center. I'm an inch short on the opening, so I need to have contractor redo the opening.
I had a curtain up for a while before the Elfa. I really hated the curtain. So now I am looking at the Elfa design which looks great in it's current organized state. But doors will come... eventually.
No doors! I like the open concept, and it will really remind you to edit, store, keep neat. Personally...I like the cherry.
You really should cover it. No closet gets styled like the one in the picture every day. The noise of the articles of clothing will eventually get to you. Esp since its in your bedroom. I'd get a lovely linen drape to conceal it in an elegant way.
I would go with a white melamine. While a cherry wood is beautiful, it does have a tendency to be rather dark. Unless you are fortunate enough to have everything well lit, white would be your best bet - as you want to see all of your clothes. If you're not sure about the melamine, i would suggest calling in a professional like Closet Factory (dot com) to come in and do a free in home consultation. They'll also be able to recommend other finishes that would give you the look you need, and match the other pieces in your home. Happy organizing!
no curtains!
if you don't like the mirrored doors (I don't like them either) then replace them with solid or louvered
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
I don't live by a Container Store, so I'll be using the Closetmaid Selectives from Home Depot. It turns out to about $300 for everything I want.
I'll be getting it in white and closing it off with curtains (probably white). Unless I decided to keep the doors and do something decorative on them like "Artacia" suggested. I'll also have to check what other type of closet doors are sold (I'm a semi-poor college student, can't spend much).
Thanks everyone!
Curtains. A cotton velvet would be lovely in the bedroom.
If you are going to cover the closet with a curtain, get them extra long and hang them from the ceiling to the floor in front of the closet. It'll look nicer and more elegant.
