Q: This is my green and red guest room. Much of it reminds me of an Apartment Therapy house tour — the combination of flea market finds plus family heirlooms plus Pottery Barn. Yet it feels very dated in the "cottage style" look that was popular when I decorated the room ten years ago. How can I bring this room into 2010? Which elements could I update, without investing too much time or money? Thanks.

Sheex Bedding
Paint the room a mossy/dark green, add some roman shades in a lighter color, maybe a taupe. And then update with some clay red sheets in satin maybe to match the comforter.
I would also update with dark wood furniture in an espresso finish, you can go high end or low depending on budget.
And some more modern art possibly to update the look as well.
Hope some of this helps.
Paint the room a light turquoise-it will go great with the red and the color or the wood in the room. It will make the room feel a bit more modern but turquoise also has a vintage feel when paired with red.
Throw in a tripod floor lamp (target) and lose the throw on the chair. Ikea has the Tulsta (i think) chair for under 100 bucks if you wanted to change the chair.
Good luck-I love the wood trim!
Easy. Change the bedding, the chair cover, and the art on the walls. Done!
ditto saint78. I think you'd go a long way towards updating just by replacing the art work w/ a few larger, less flowery pieces. The lamp on the dresser could be replaced w/ something less grandmotherish. And the fringed throw on the chair could be replaced w/ a slipcover.
I'd paint the room and the dresser accordingly to match a new duvet.
Next change the art and get a new cover for the chair. Find a thriftable lamp.
Finished!
New art, paint the dresser, new bed spread. Maybe try black and white, maybe try a light turquoise for the color scheme. I think you could actually keep the window treatments - they're a great red and have nice lines. But most importantly, update what you have on the walls, the paint on the dresser, and the bedspread.
I think that the most obvious, cheap and quick things you could change are the bedspread and the blinds (white?). I'd go plain and neutral, and get rid of the floor lamp and the chest/ottoman at the foot of the bed. The cord from the lamp looks ugly, so maybe a bedside table and table lamp?
I'd also replace the arrangement of pictures with one large, modern piece and probably wouldn't hang anything above the bed. As for the chest of drawers, either repaint or replace.
I don't think it would take much to improve it.
I agree with plumeria: new linens and art (a couple of larger pieces instead of lots of little ones). Bring in some more modern accessories, such as a new lamp, and update the window coverings.
you cant have both those prints in there at once. get rid of one. my recommendation is the chair cover and then maybe add some thin cotton drapes to lighten up the walls with that dark trim. That I think is the bare minimum that you could do.
Okay, my turn. And it really depends on how much you want to do. First of all, I don't think you HAVE to change very much. But here are the "must" changes:
1. Lower your artwork! (you don't have to remove it--just lower it.)
2. Get rid of that little brass lamp next to the bed. At least get rid of the lamp shade. It's not cute, fun cottage. It's sorta..... grandma?
3. Repaint that dresser! It will put an immediate halt to your red and gold theme. The gold picture frames are absolutely fine--they go along with the style of the room. But the gold paint on the dresser? No. It's all just too matchy-matchy, and the direct culprit is that DRESSER. How about a nice creamy pale green, about three shades lighter than the throw pillow on the chair.
4. Remove the grandma lamp from the top of the dressers (along with at least two of the framed photos). Get a cute little lamp that's more fun and modern. Try IKEA (even if you can afford better!).
And that's all I'd do! But if you're dying to try something new, I think the idea of turquoise walls is great. A new wall color would really change up the room. But that's only if you want a major change. If not, I don't mind the wall color at all. Nor do I mind the bedding, or the throw on the chair, or the art.... In fact (aside from the changes that I mentioned), I think it's a really cute room!
I would also get some contemporary lamps and change the picture arrangement on top of the dresser (which I would keep). A couple of accessories of this sort would work well I think...

Good luck!
Turquoise walls and a white bedspread. Or white walls and a turquoise bedspread.
Rehang the pictures so that the large floral painting on the left is directly over the dresser. Edit the dresser top to remover 75% of those frames. If the chair is terrible, replace it with another-if you've got an heirloom-waiting-to-happen under there, refinish it.
No need to paint.
But change the bed cover, try to get more light in by chosing a white cover instead and add some matching throw pillows on it. Change the artwork and put up a big mirror over your dresser. Also, add a mat and some flowers to make the room look more cozy and not like a room that is "left over".
My order is:
New duvet cover on the comforter.
No ottoman- it clashes, and doesn't do much for this room- switch to a steamer trunk or one of those suitcase stands down the line. Also is it the same as the rug? Both of those are a little muddy looking- reddish greens...meh.
Moving the pictures. To me it looks like the cluster on the side wall is too high, but I also think the one over the headboard is off center. I'd group them all together in one place, and then look for something modern and cheeky to offset things. Actually, just yesterday I saw this: http://www.20x200.com/art/2010/02/first-harvest-in-the-wilderness-with-pileated-woodpecker.html, and it would make everything else in the room subtly in on the joke.
The lamps! Oh the horrors! I'd replace these with something still antique flavored, but not printed with cabbage roses. Maybe just keep the lampstand and get nice plain shades.
The dresser paint is not my favorite, but it is personality, and could be rocked if it's your style and you love it, so I think you can get away with it if you pick something nice in bedding that doesn't clash.
I like the blinds, the funky bureau, and the bed. I don't even think you need to paint. I would start with new bedding; new throws for the chair and whatever is at the base of the bed (in a solid or simple geometric pattern); lower the art work and/or cluster all of them above the headboard; and get a small bedside table with a small reading light - it's always nice for a guest to have a place to have a clock, put a glass of water, a book, etc. Some ideas:

http://www.westelm.com/products/w257/?pkey=ctable-lamps
As with clothing, accessories can make or break a room. Here's what I would suggest:
- Update bed linens and chair cover. Keep some red if you want to match the shades (which are fine, in my opinion).
- New art. Perhaps you can switch paintings/photographs with others in your house?
- Change lampshade on floor lamp by bed, and switch out the lamp on the dresser.
Also, if you have the space, moving furniture around can give a room a whole new look. Plus, it's cheap.... :)
I'd go with a mushroom, red and white color scheme. I agree with everyone who suggests updating the comforter and the chair cover, and replacing the lamp with a modern one. I would definitely paint the wood trim. That old shiny, varnished wood look dates the room significantly. Mushroom colored walls, white trim and red accents (keep the blinds and the dresser). Perhaps reframe the artwork in some more contemporary black frames.
i'd get rid of the red and change the color scheme of the room. you could try painting the trim around the windows white, paint the walls a soft blue or green, get tan window treatments, paint the dresser an ivory and keep the green trim. then, a little later if necessary, you could get a new duvet and maybe a pendant ceiling light (the fillsta from IKEA is only $29.99).
I like the art, but maybe some new frames, and a better arrangement would freshen things up. Lamps, please! Everyone else above has great ideas, so I won't repeat so much.... Please post some after photos!
I'd also love to see some curtain panels help warm and soften things.
You can't be serious.
put up linen drapes in the bay window, put a mirror above the dresser, strip the dresser and stain it dark brown, put a cover with a mod print on the chair, rearrange the art onto one wall - still salon style, get a bigger lamp shade, get knife-edge pillowcases/shams or add euroshams or an accent pillow
everything "creative license" mentioned - i second!
So many different ideas here! And here comes my take.
The elements I would keep are the chair with its tapestry throw and pillows, the red and green dresser, and the landscape painting that's hanging on the wall.
The elements I'd lose are all of the floral paintings, the lamps, the paisley bedspread, and the thingum at the foot of the bed.
Paint the walls a fair aqua, paint the headboard a barn red, and get a large chunky wood framed mirror from the thrift store and give it a weathered paint effect with ecru and green.
Exchange the cluster of frames for one digital photo frame, and upload to it the photos that you love. Maybe the landscape painting could live on the desser, or maybe over a small bedside table.
Find art that makes you smile. Must commend e6 for the great suggestion of the Hegarty woodpecker print that would give a fun twist to the room. That would look so cool over the bed!
Purchase a textured bedding (not shiny or sheen-y) with ecru, green, and aqua. Something with the colors and simplicity of this daybed set (wrong size for you, sorry) from overstock: http://cdn2.overstock.com/images/products/L12336789.jpg
How about a pair of these handsome wall lamps at the bedside and beside the tapestry chair: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Olde-Bronze-Finish-Pin-up-Plug-in-Lamp/3613822/product.html?rcmndsrc=5
You also have a ceiling fan (I see the pulls) that could possibly stand to be be updated. The Hampton Bay Famington in bronze is simple and plain, very nice looking in person, and under $50: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xih/R-100665879/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
Going colorful but not too matchy, and keeping touchable textures would make this room very current and comfortable. Avoid fussy details, but choose a few expansive and deliberate flourishes.
Whatever you end up doing, please post an AFTER photo!
I think the most effective thing you could do would be to replace the bedspread/duvet cover. Something more graphic or more textural. Ideally you could also switch out the chair throw for something that coordinated with the new bedspread.
I think the dresser is nice, as are the shades. I like the painting and art-rearrangement suggestions above. Especially lowering the pictures, and turquoise for the walls - do some google-image-ing to look for examples of turquoise and red together, it can be very cute and retro.
The lamp would work if it were the only thing on top of the dresser. I would take all that stuff off the dresser - maybe make one wall area for pictures? there have been great examples on here of photos/art in an assortment of frames that are all the same color. It would be cute if you had turquoise walls and red frames, for example. With something different on the bedspread to break up the matchy-matchy. Good luck!
I just realized all your frames are gold! That works perfectly!
Perhaps change out the picture frames on the wall for something a little more sleek (all the same color. Or are the all currently gold? if so, keep them gold but try adding a white or ivory mat to each). check places like IKEA and Target for a fresher comforter on the bed. And the lamps should just go. At least the shades. Replace with something non-floral (solid white or maybe a stripe or wicker for texture). Ikea, Pier 1 and even target are good places to look. Add a larger mirror over the dresser. The dresser can stay, or you could paint it if you hate it. One bright color that complements the wall and linens you choose.
i like the room! it really doesn't need much. i vote for a new bedspread, keeping w/ the whole red/green/tan color scheme you've got going on. also, i like the throw over the chair. could you use it at the bottom of the bed instead of over the chair, and get a bedspread that complements it?
agree w/ the suggestion to remove the ottoman/chest at the bottom of the bed unless it is majorly needed for storage. if you keep it, can you re-cover it?
paint could be nice (a tan or mushroom color) to freshen up the walls, but don't think it's necessary.
i like the cluster of artwork, but i agree with the comment above that it is positioned too high. take a look @ other AT posts on the proper height to hang your artwork. also, a few other pieces might make it look more purpose-ful.
also, could you potentially center the bed on the wall so people are able to get into it from both sides? then you could do tiny wall-mounted night stands and/or sconces on both sides.
If you want everything to look less "dowdy" stop covering it in blankets! If you've got some truly awful furniture under there, try compromising with some more modern fabric.
If that's a blanket on a chest at the end of the bed, take off the blanket. If that's an actual piece of furniture, I would seriously contemplate putting new fabric on it or getting rid of it. Square shapes like that are a lot more easy to reupholster than you would think.
The pink flower prints are just killing the room. If you're sentimentally attached to them that's totally fine, but you should play around with their placement to see if you can't find a more modern feel. They look weird now because EVERYTHING is the same color - if you went with nice crisp darker bedding and non-red shades, then they would look like a nice contrast instead of more pink pink pink.
I love the actual wood of the bed, from what I can see. You've got a nice shape there, so don't worry about trying to replace it. Painted dressers are popular with the green crowd too, so hey, leave it if you like it! Just don't go with such an overwhelming amount of similar shades, so don't fill the room with more red if you want to keep the red of the flowers and dresser.
And agreeing with everyone else - new lamps or at least new lampshades would do wonders for removing the grandma vibe.
Love the pale turquoise idea for a wall color... Then I'd switch out the sheets and comforter for white ones. Add a couple of red and turquoise pillows and regroup all the artwork in one larger installation over the bed (the bottom frames should only be about two inches above the headboard. A larger mirror for above the dresser can go on your thrift/antique store list of things you are searching for. Consider painting the dresser a shade or two darker than the new wall color, but that's just lagniappe.
Is this a serious question? Take the blanket off the chair, paint the walls, put a sisal rug down (cheap at IKEA), new bedspread. You could paint the woodwork as well. Easy peasy.
I agree with the mushroom, red and white color palette, so just paint the room a light, earthy gray. Also, get drum shade for the floor lamp, keep the curtains, keep the artwork (just hang it all above the bed in such a way that they together form a rectangle or square silhouette, keep the bedding if you want (or get something in a deeper red-either in a solid or geometric pattern), get a different throw for the chair, change out the lamp on the dresser with a modern one (target or ikea), declutter the dresser top, find something to hang about the dresser-sunburst mirror, perhaps?). That should do it. If you didn't replace the bedding, I bet you could do this for under a hundred dollars.
CAUTION:
Unless you hate your headboard, don't paint it!!!!!!
I think your headboard is really lovely as is.
Also, did you ever think of making your bed in a different way? How about pulling your comforter down to the end of your bed and showing a bit of top sheet and blanket? Then you could prop up your pillows against the headboard and finish it off with a decorative throw pillow. You should try that before you start investing in all new bedding. (I'm sure you even have a nice throw pillow lying around your house somewhere. There's nothing wrong with going shopping in your own home!)
By the way, it must be my computer, but I thought that your dresser was painted red and gold. I see from the comments that's it's actually green. My original suggestion, however, still stands. I'd lose the red.
How about spray painting the floor lamp cream, adding a new inexpensive cream shade, moving it next to the chair for a reading light. Then get a small table for next to the bed, paint it, put a small lamp on it.
A few other thoughts, if you aren't totally confused by now-
New shades- JC Penney has cordless honeycomb shades that retain heat, let in light, offer total privacy. They come in a variety of sizes, are inexpensive, very subtle. I actually cut mine to a custom size with a table saw.
Maybe a larger mirror over the bureau for your guests, and remove the pictures from the bureau. Repaint the red section of the bureau with the same green, or cream?
You could think about a larger mat and frame for the floral over the bed for more impact.
My suggestion would be to have an Asian theme. Paint the non-red parts on the dresser a high gloss black. Change the bedding, change or remove the throw over the chair, add a nightstand, move the floor lamp to over by the chair and get a decent bedside lamp on the nightstand. Remove lamp on dresser from the room. Change out the artwork.
Paint it grey.
for the record, troseph's comment was the best ("You can't be serious." posted by troseph on March 9th 2010 at 10:05am)
ANYWAY.
white and black. so easy:
get some white spray paint and paint the picture frames white.
paint your dresser white.
paint the trim on the windows black.
paint your headboard white. or just get rid of the damn thing.
white curtains.
white and black duvet cover and NO i do not mean a white and black patterned duvet cover, i mean something like this. throw a nice blanket across the bed.
and for god's sake, get a real slipcover for the chair (that is, if you can't afford a new chair altogether). white, please. and put a neutral, unpatterned throw on it. and get rid of those pillows!
for the record, people like troseph should just smirk to themselves and go on to the next post rather than just making fun of someone's home.
ditch the red and green. way to christmas and not a modern color combination at all.
add in a new color
paint the walls
change the bedding
get new frames for the art or paint the ones you have
Instead of trying to bring it to 2010, bring it to something classic and gorgeous.
The room looks incredibly old and outdated.
BED:
I like the paisley comforter is it really nice, but place a fresh white blanket folded on the end of the bed.
Fresh white sheets!!
The pillows under the first set of pillows look really dingy and old . Have all sheets white!!
Buy a white bedskirt.
Go to homesense and winners - there are always tons of bed sheets and throws on CLEARENCE!!
PAINT:
A lovely creamy white:
Head board
Baseboards, Window frames and walls
to freshen everything
The room is very small, this will brighten it up!! Make it look larger
ART:
Remove all of the art
All of it is very outdated and none of the prints are nice.
They are too small
Find one really large piece of art that you love above the bed
Atleast the length of the bed width wise!!
LAMP:
Lamp is gorgeous, the brass is great but replace with a large white linen shade!!!
DRESSER:
Paint a nice creamy white
Replace pulls with CRYSTAL pulls
Remove all the small frames all over the dresser , this is a guest bedroom , it does not feel like one with all the small personal frames on there.
Buy a large silver vintage tray so guests can place their own personal things ( wallet, toiletry bag etc )
Replace the lamp with something new and modern, that lamp needs to be tossed.
All that you should have on the dresser:
LAMP
TRAY
OVER TOP OF THE DRESSER:
A Large wide mirror over top
Either a beveled mirror or a nice neutral gold framed mirror.
BLINDS:
REMOVE THOSE RED BLINDS!
They have really nice wood blinds at wal-mart that are cheap ( bamboo style)
If you can afford it :
Roman blinds or
Thick white wood blinds
CHAIR:
Cover with a light coloured plain cover instead of the floral
(white)
Place any kind of pillow you would like to accessorize!
Oh I forgot:
Get rid of whatever is at the end of the bed
Replace the rug by the bed with something oval and neutral
or really large cream coloured rug in the room
OH AND
Move the bed over and place the lamp on the other side of the bed near the other side of the wall!!!!!!!!!!
( So you can have access to the other side of the bed when making the bed, it sucks to have a bed against a wall )
LAMP IDEAS:
CRYSTAL LAMPS:
Similar to these,
GET PLAIN AND SIMPLEEEEE!
http://media.onsugar.com/files/ons/276/2765213/06_2009/4b/crystal-lamp.jpg
Basically, what has been said change lines, get rid of cover on chair- cover the chair with a nice throw and new cushion.
Take out that bench at the end of bed.
Group all art to one wall and lower, not at the head of the bed. Get a vintage dark wood table for bedside table and new lamp.
Remove all the stuff off chest and just get a simple lamp tall lamp and one bud vase or small plant, one picture frame. I think a tall mirror would go nicely over the chest.
I would not oppose to painting the dresser white, new hardware.
Maybe some simple white shades or white linen curtains or keep what you have.
I would go more crisp white walls it looks fresh with the dark wood trim and floors, white linens- white duvet cover and big euro shams , tailored bedskirt all white or add a small print in red for the coverlet or sheets.
Accent with some reds, apple green, turquoise this can be through cushions, throws, quilt, lamp shade. But keep a to classic white basics.
Simple lamps- one vintage style, one new style

Some bedding with texture-

everyone's an expert... i'm with abg on the turquoise paint as a way to freshen up what you have. starting from scratch is just wasteful. moving the art lower, and losing the throw/chair for something white and more modern would be cool. maybe sub out the green paint on the dresser for white to tie that together?
This room has perfectly lovely traditional décor – with a little vintage thrift thrown in. It does not look dated at all. But, it does look a tiny bit tired...
You didn’t specify what type of look you’re going for, but here are 2 different approaches you could take:
Traditional and Cozy (an update of your current scheme):
---Keep the red shades.
---Paint the walls a very soft wheat color.
---Re-paint your dresser a single solid color. I’d go with a medium tone green. I actually like the green trim it now has, but getting rid of the two-tone look will soften it.
---Keep your headboard as is.
---Ivory duvet and matching pillow covers. As others suggested, I’d go with something textural, such as a damask. Or how about Eileen Fisher’s cotton voile quilt?
---Take the crewel textile from your chair, and fold it up at the end of the bed. If it is too small for this, use it to recover your ottoman.
---Reupholster the chair in an “updated traditional” print of your choice. If you don’t have the budget for that, cover it with one of those faux fur throws from PB.
---Keep your ottoman at the base of the bed – so practical for a suitcase. Reupholster it in a subtle print or textural solid (like maybe one of those woven fabrics that looks like rattan?)
---Take the medium sized floral painting (far right in the grouping) and hang it over the headboard (lower). Remove the rest of the art.
---Find a small screenprint (modern) that you like on Etsy. Frame it simply, and hang it over the dresser in place of the mirror.
---Replace the antique lamp on the dresser with one that is small and unexpected. Like a small brass lamp from the 70s. I like the idea of shiny, and a little touch of disco would be fun. Those small unexpected touches make traditional decor more interesting.
Organic Restful Retreat (a new look)
---Replace the red shades with bamboo blinds or sheer linen Roman blinds.
---Keep the walls white.
---Paint the dresser a soft, sage green. Or even a soft turquoise. Keep it soft and light.
---Paint your headboard a brown-black. (Trust me, it won’t be too dark.)
---Same bedding as above. If you go with white, don’t do a harsh white. Keep it soft.
---Add a fluffy mohair throw at the end of the bed (solid).
--- Reupholster the chair in an subtle print of your choice. Or, replace it with a calmer printed cover. Add one of those PB seagrass (or woven paper) pillows.
---Recover the ottoman with a textural solid. Again, maybe even one of those woven fabrics that looks like rattan?)
---Replace the antique lamp on the dresser with a small, more modern version. You could go with a Noguchi-type of lamp, or even something shiny, like chrome or nickel.
---Replace the existing artwork with just 2 or 3 images about the size of the current piece over your headboard. Keep them organic in feel – maybe pressed leaves or simple, modern botanic-themed screenprints from Etsy. Frame them simply and hang them lower than your current art.
And for both schemes:
---Add 2 plug-in wall lamps on either side of the bed. Every room needs a touch of black. Introduce that here via bronze / black / oil rubbed finishes.
---Add a small nightstand.
and put the bed in the bay window, facing the door, put the dresser on the wall by the door (with mirror over it) and the chair wherever it fits
I agree that you should probably change the linens, artwork and lamps. Maybe use something with the same colors but solid so it doesn't date itself in a couple of years (and with a solid comforter you could always add different shams and a throw at the end that compliment each other)
I personally don't find it that dated. I think you can also refresh it and still maintain a cottage style.
I would either go a warm khaki on the walls, or a buttery yellow, either of which will work with current bedding and shades, yet leave the door open for a bedding change out if you feel the itch.
Do a tight grouping of ALL the room's current artwork above the bed, and get a mirror for above the chest.
Where I think the room can take the biggest step forward in time is the lighting. I'd do colored ceramic or metal bases.
Remove the throw from the chair. Not sure its style, color or condition, but the throw is pulling it down. A fresh solid in a light color would get my vote.
Get a brass and glass bedside table. If you have room, and want something way more modern, perhaps consider the West Elm Parson desk or mini-desk as a side table (with high functionality for a guest room!)
I'd add a colorful ceramic garden stool for some unexpected color... perhaps as a drinks spot next tot he chair that can also double as a place to open a suitcase.
I'd consider (re)painting that chest but not until the rest of the room is tweaked.
Then see where you are. I don't think it will take much at all.
And, without incurring the wrath, I'd say to study the style and styling of the Pottery Barn catalogs and their series of books.
Depending on how much time and energy you want to spend, the other ideas here are great - or too involved.
If I wanted to do a quick update, I'd start by taking down the wall art which definitely dates the room.
Lose the throw, or fold it over the back of the chair.
If you'd like to keep the general color scheme, keep the shades and dresser the same, but buy a new comforter set in the green of the dresser trim. Try something solid, or without a busy pattern.
Definitely a set with some pillow cases and/or shims.
A new lamp shade in red.
If you're terribly attached to the paintings or just don't want to buy new art right away, try moving the large one of the vase of flowers to above the dresser, and spacing the other three apart like this: | - |
Looks like a blanket chest at the end of the end? If the fabric isn't just a blanket on top that can be put inside, you might want to re-upholster it with something more sleek.
Keep the lamp; I'm rather fond of it, and think it would be a good centerpiece for the dresser, maybe paired with a runner. Sand and repaint the dresser a turquoise (which I believe was suggested already), or a color similar to the green that is on the border already, but more saturated.
Lose the throw, the shades, the paintings, the clutter on the dresser, and your lamp.
Reupholster the chair with a fabric more bohemian, that takes colors from the reds, greens, and creams you've got. The shades can remain an orange-red, but again, more saturated (or find some semi-sheer curtains and drape them). Display the photos on the dresser in a more modular frame placed where the four paintings were, and hang a round ornate mirror above the dresser. Replace the lamp with wall sconces.
Go basic with bedding. Put white pillowcases on the bottom pillows, get subtle patterned sheets, and fold down a solid comforter.
New bedding.
I don't like the lamp much either, but that's a personal preference. Maybe clump all of the current art together, add a large piece over the bed.
I would leave the dresser. It's nice and too much work to repaint. Maybe change the shades, but that depends on what you change the bedding to.
No need to paint the room. There's just way too many oldfashioned prints, lose a few of them (or all) and you're fine. (especially the throw on the chair..)
I'm sure you've got enough to go on here, but I couldn't bite my tongue.
The duvet is really letting the room down. If you replace only one thing, let it be that. I'd install a fresher-looking window treatment, something that was a little lighter.
I'm not sure you need to get fewer, larger art pieces for the wall. You could get a contemporary look by creating an organic, asymmetric grouping by adding a lot of smaller pieces around the existing art.
Red and green can be a great colour scheme, and it sounds like you're generally happy with your palette, but just want to brighten and freshen it. I do think that the single greatest thing you could do for the room is change the bedspread. A duvet would look more modern and luxurious, and I think a textured white would be a good choice, but I'm sure it's not the only option. (And of course with a duvet, you can get two different duvet covers and change the look instantly whenever you want to). I think this room is a good example of an up-to-date red and green color scheme: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7xZ1bPT4ugU/SlDaYUjNH6I/AAAAAAAAAXo/jOnO3-rYPQw/s1600-h/red,%2Bgreen%2Band%2Btaupe%2Bliving%2Broom.bmp
One of the things you could incorporate would be to put your art (provided you like all of it and still want it there) into a more geometric arrangement. Some straight, clean lines, and a bright white here and there do wonders for modernising a room.
I also agree that a nice rug would add a lot to the room--love your hardwood floors.
Painting the room, besides changing the bedcover, is the next most transformative thing you could do. I like what they did in the picture I linked to, but there are other possibilities. After that, I think you can continue to make little changes based on the direction you'd like to take. It's fun to reassess and tweak as you go. Have fun with it. I, too, would love to see the results.
