Q: Does anyone know of a good source of decking materials around New York City? I want to put down decking (like cedar or a tropical hardwood) on top of the concrete pavers on my terrace. I am not looking for outdoor wood tiles nor a contractor that will get its own materials — I am looking for a good old lumber yard where I can go pick stuff up, roll up my sleeves and put down decking. Any suggestions? There's gotta be better lumber resources than Home Depot and Lowes in Brooklyn!

I would suggest you try:
Metropolitan Lumber & Hardware in Soho

It has been a few years since I bought wood for shelving from here, but I think they sell wood that is intended for decking. I think they have another location in Chelsea, but I haven't been there.
There's a place in Chelsea/Meatpacking.
Hold on, Googling name ...

Ahh, Prince Lumber, that's the place I always see ... http://www.princelumber.com/
Not sure how their prices compare to the suburbs. But not sure how much you need, but it may be cheaper to rent a UHaul and head out to NJ and load that up with lumber.
Oops, didn't realize the Editor note already listed Prince Lumber.
I might try to discourage you from using cedar or anything tropical, as Cedar has been felled to extinction in the U.S. and anything tropical is more than likely to harvested unsustainably. Even tree-farms are responsible for deforestation. A better option might be something like Trex, which is made from recycled plastic and has an extremely long lifespan.
Try Build It Green NYC in Astoria (a non-profit that recycles building materials): http://www.bignyc.org/
I have had good luck with Prince Lumber. they will cut and deliver everything to the curb. I figured out what I needed for our roof, had them cut each board and deliver it. it worked out perfect!
Also, I second renting a truck and going to NJ or Brooklyn HD. Zip car has some pickups in the city too...
i had a friend do some work on my apt a couple years ago and used the Lumber Boys at 698 2nd Ave,(212) 683-0410. They were great, cut to size and deliver.
Cedar is actually considered a 'green' product and better for the environment in the longterm than using man-made materials.

That site is from the Western Red Cedar Export Association .. . and they cite "biodegradable" as one of Cedar's benefits.
I second (or third) Prince, they're always really good to work with.
I would ask the building first if you can do this. All that wood and hardware is going to put a lot of weight on the terrace and it might be more than the building deems "safe"
We always go to Dyke's.
It's at 167 6th Street, around 2nd Ave. Brooklyn, of course.

Western Red Cedar is rated with a conservation status of "least concern" and is still quite common in Canadian forests. I'd think that "biodegradable" would be a positive factor in choosing a material, just like "recycled" is. Better yet if you can get recycled cedar to do it with?
I second Dyke's Lumber. No idea about the size of the warehouse in Brooklyn, but the one in Weehawken (just outside the Lincoln Tunnel) is pretty big.

Dykes Lumber is excellent. I also recommend using IPE, which is a very dense beautiful dark wood that will hold up well in a deck application.
Order via Overstock.com. There are several materials to choose from, and others in the city have used them with great reviews. Check it out: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Shorea-8-slat-Snapping-Deck-Tile-Pack-of-10/3379823/product.html
Thank you all for helping!!! Will send in pictures of the finished project
