Q: I'm bursting with joy that I just won an auction on 4 glossy white Verner Panton S Chairs for my apartment. The only problem is that I'm feeling stumped on what kind of dining table to pair them with. Many people have suggested the fake Tulip table at IKEA — but I really want a sprawling table that doesn't break the budget. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Editor: The best part of owning a classic chair like a Verner Panton S Chair is that is goes with almost everything. I've placed it with West Elm's Modern Farm Dining Table and CB2's Tribe Dining Table to support the current trend of urban industrial. Who has suggestions for Kim? What table would YOU buy for Glossy Verner Panton S Chairs?

I am thinking a round table would look good.
We paired ours with an antique pedestal-style round table that I inherited from my mother-in-law and previously thought was heinous - they look great together! The curves of the table soften the look of the chairs and make a nice contrast. If you want a rectangular version, consider the Kipling Extension table from C&B.

Or another option would be the more expensive but gorgeous French Kitchen Table. I've seen similar pairings in several magazines.

I'd agree that something round with soft edges rather than hard lines is necessary. Ikea has a big white oval shaped table that is large in size and still affordable.
I'm thinking something round and glass.
Here is a great link with some ideas: http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/5700/list/The-Curvacious-Panton-Chair--It-Works-Just-About-Anywhere
I'd put the chairs in the space where you're going to be using them, move them around a little to see about which footprint would look best - oblong or round. With a chair like that I'd go for a minimal table, a pedestal or a glass topped thing. If you need something temporary while you're deciding, get a cheapy Ikea Melltorp.
Congrats on your wonderful chairs. I'm sure you'll enjoy them for years to come.
I think the idea of a more rustic table is right on. Since you're in NY, check out "Old Good Things", which is near Union Square. They have a great selection of reclaimed wood farm tables. Any size you need, either in stock or they will make one up for you. Same or better prices than CnB.
I got one to go with my DCW chairs.
I have two Panton chairs and 4 old fashioned white thonet chairs around a wooden table with white legs. The tabletop is a rounded rectangle. I'd say that panton chairs go with everything!
the great shape of the chairs would be accentuated with some contrast...
they'd be perfect with the "EDGY" dining table (that my sister and I designed). in fact, it's one of our ten favorite chairs to go with table!

both pieces would look wonderful with Lindsey Adelman's "you make it" chandelier (or any of her other gorgeous lighting).

tie it all together with some beautiful tableware from heath ceramics (their "rim" or "coupe" lines are my top picks) or some "grandmothers" china finds on ebay, and you're all set!
I disagree with the suggestions for a round table. The chairs are SO flowing and rounded already that adding a similarly shaped table might give the whole arrangement a bit of a funhouse effect.
I vote for a crisp, contrasting piece, such as the West Elm table cited by Aaron.
A round glass table.
Shape of the table should be dictated by the space you have to work with, not the chairs.
Beyond that, hard to say without any more style cues about your taste and the adjoining spaces.
If you want funky rectangular color, do the Strut table in Watermelon from BluDot.
Other than that, stainless steel, a custom table from Room & Board's Portico or Parsons lines with a stone or glass top, rustic wood (Crate & Barrel's Big Sur)... you're pretty open.
I personally would do something with a pedestal base, because of how the chair bases are shaped.
glass - to show off the chairs!
Perhaps a white and chrome Kartell Maui Table . . . http://classifieds.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/ad.php?adid=13634
I think something rectangular, with really clean lines, and completely clear acrylic/lucite the whole way through would look amazing. I can't find a photo that fits (might have to be a custom job) but I'm thinking the shape of the first table in the original post, except see-through. Show off those insane chairs!
Also, hi everyone (first post).
an old, roomy, rectangular farmhouse table
look at ikea's norrsten table.
it's an ikea sleeper. ingenious joinery and nice craft. and as aluminum and glass, we have it as an atrium table.
I completely agree with the Farmhouse table suggestion. If you're really looking to save money and are somewhat handy check out the Knock Off Wood site. You can find super easy plans to build your own Farmhouse table for SUPER CHEAP. CHECK IT OUT!
Whatever you do - Don't waste your money on that crappy IKEA table.
If I had the space, I'd choose a Bond table from R&B

Another first post...
I've had black Panton chairs for many years and have paired
them with two very different tables. First an old walnut
table

and now an e15 bigfoot table.

the chairs "flow" sort of like ribbons do.. i like the idea of pairing them with something with hard corners and straight lines to get a nice contrast going... much like the two tables that are pictured. thats what id do. the chairs are eye catching, let the chairs do their job without having to compete with an equally interesting table. :)
A round table. To compliment the curves of the chairs.
I always love the look of Panton chairs with rustic farmhouse tables. Mainly, I just love farmhouse tables (I wish I had one), but I really think the contrast you get when matching them with more modern chairs is beautiful.
I'd scour the flea markets for a big, rough finished, well used, pedestal table. But wait until you find the perfect one, don't settle for just any table.
The Aarnio Parabel table.

Am I the only one who hates these chairs? So much plastic.
Plastic is the future. I hate wood.
Don't get the ikea saarinen knock off...I had it for a few weeks and it was so wiggly it drove me bonkers! I sold it on craigslist and managed to get a burke saarinen knock off which is super duper sturdy.
I am also a huge fan of those chairs and like the idea of mixing those chairs with a wooden table for a different texture feel...and I really like the bottom wood table that you posted. Are yours glossy or matte? Check out link below for some idea's....
I agree with the last post not to get the ikea saarinen knock off..or any knock off of that style table for that matter. Think it is much more interesting to mix elements!
