Q: I came across a website that sells various high-end designer furnishings. Their prices seem too good to be true, and I can't seem to find any info about the legitimacy of their offerings. A search for the address listed on their site comes up as a fried chicken place … have I just answered my own question?
Anyway, wondering if your contributors or readers have any info on Lexington Modern?

Wow, that is cheap! I have no clue!!
Well, googling "lexingtonmodern.com scams" doesn't bring up any complaint pages. And googling the address does bring up a chicken place. Maybe it's an office building (IDK?)? That's a tough one. Why not call the # on the site and ask where they are located? "Hi, are you located next to [chicken place]?" But the prices seem like such a deal!
I'm not sure ... that's a multi-story space, so your sales folks could be located above the fried chicken restaurant. one thing is for sure is that this stuff is not made in America, so they probably don't need a huge warehouse space. Lexington Modern is on Ebay and they have a 100% positive rating with 176 reviews. Probably they get their stuff from the same place that every other knockoff company gets it, but the selection at Lexington Modern isn't so great. They seem to have a pretty good price on the Eames office chair, but it looks like they took a little creative license with it ... the legs look a bit odd. :-/
I have noticed a lot of modern replica companies lately. Apparently Chinese factories are churning out copies and selling them here. It is possible that they are decent fakes. If you buy use an AMX so your $ will be covered if it is a fraud.
On closer look they look like knock offs. But, knock offs aren't bad for us poor folks with rich taste!
Combination modern furniture retailer and fried chicken restaurant-- my ideal establishment.
Take a look at the materials they are using too.
LM Tulip Chair: ABS Plastic, Alumium, Cloth
DWR Tulip Chair: Molded Fiberglass (GRP), Alumium, Leather
...
You get what you pay for. :)
Wow, what shameless abuse of designers and their work, with bios and history used to sell trash. I think such misrepresentation is illegal, right?
"But, knock offs aren't bad for us poor folks with rich taste!"
So ethics are only for wealthy people?
At least one of their pieces is listed as a "high quality reproduction" on the website.
Many of the descriptions say reproductions. I looked at the Womb Chair and the description is somewhat shady:
"The Womb Chair and Ottoman is a classic design, and one of the most comfortable chairs to lounge in. It envelops you in such a way that you feel completely relaxed. The W Chair features a stainless steel base and is made upholstered in wool material."
Notice how it says "The W Chair". They are advertising Womb Chair but selling the W Chair.
I doubt you are going to get a high quality piece of furniture form Lexington Modern.
They are not the real thing. The site says modern classic furniture so you know it is not old. Also I looked under Eames, and it is called "eames style" chair so again, it states it is not an actual Eames chair. Like one of the other comments said, you get what you pay for. It might be a cheap way to get a designer look, but I don't know about the quality.
ABS plastic is not so different from GRP fiberglass. Both are types of plastic, it just depends on the method of manufacture, but I believe the process may be a little less expensive for ABS plastic. DWR sells several "re-interpreted" designs made out of ABS plastic, and many famous designers used it as their plastic of choice. But I think since the original tulip chairs were made from fiberglass, that is why the licensed reproductions are still made that way. I have heard that GRP fiberglass has better load capacity than ABS plastic, so hopefully you will not have any reason to put a several thousand pound load into your tulip chair!!!
this is the same inventory at inmod.com and you'll find some at overstock.com. I'm betting this just a middleman sourcing the same inventory.
"Apparently Chinese factories are churning out copies and selling them here."
Where do you think most of DWR's stuff originates? Modernica, to name one, imports the Chinese-made parts and assembles them in LA.
For the love of god, not another real Vs. knock-off post. An bepsf, questioning the poster's ethics because they are not neurotic about knock-offs...a bit much.
Oh, oh... I had to buy generic macaroni and cheese, 'cause they ran out of Kraft... I know it's not the cheesiest, but I needed it right then and there... MY ETHICS! MYYY EEETHIIIIIIICCCSSSS!!!!! lol (whatever)
Lexington Modern operates an Ebay store, and has launched an e-commerce site to better serve our customers. We are also in the works of launching a physical retail storefront, in a multi-store building, and that may be the cause of confusion with the "Fried Chicken" at that address.
We have found ABS plastic to be more resistant to chipping and scratching during the shipping process, and have therefore switched materials on certain items to ensure they arrive in great shape and withstand rigorous use.
Indeed, many of our customers are restaurants, hotels, and other commercial buyers - all of whom check our quality before buying their large orders.
We back up all of our items with a 1 year warranty, 30 day return policy, and excellent customer service (as evidenced by our 100% positive Ebay feedback).
We carefully select only top quality items for our modern classic collection, and provide top value.
Should you have any questions about any items, please feel free to give us a call at 866-505-7701.

David

i just ordered a pair of the saarinen tulip armchairs from lexington after doing my ebay research and having chatted on the phone with the lexington people. they seem honest, as much as any of the MANY sellers hawking the tulip chairs. i will say this, as a journalist, i went beyond usual research and joined a buying group in china where there are many factories producing "midcentury" furniture. i have received several quotes for multiple chairs. the cost per chair is as low as $60 wholesale to $70. 20 chairs shipped from china to a warehouse in new york is around $740, according to one quote. some factories have the capacity to turn out 10,000 chairs a month. i suspect but dont know for a fact that many of the sellers are linked together using many different names. in any case, the price is right if the chairs hold up, and stay looking good. and who is crazy enough to spend $1300 plus tax at DWR for the "licensed" version GMAFB! Lexington offers a 30 day return (with a restocking fee) and a one year warranty "to fix or replace." I'll post a review when i have a chance. Of 5 or 6 vendors i approached i felt the most confident with lexington. so we will see.
the chairs arrived and are pretty easy to assemble. i say "pretty easy" because the bolt at the bottom of the base was so tight on each chair-- and i didnt have the proper wrench -- that i will have to take the two bases to a garage or hardware store to get the bolts loosened so the chairs can swivel. it did take three calls to lexington to get the assembly guy to explain the problem which i had basically figured out. the chairs come with a separate chair, the swivel base, a round disk with six screw holes that sits at the top part of the bottom of the chair (where your butt sits), and a baggy with six screws and a little wrench. it's easy to put the chairs together but if the bottom bolt in the base is too tight, well off to a place where it can be loosened unless you have the proper wrench and the strength of 10 chinese workers. oh, the red cushion is thick, very well made and comfortable, fits to the chair with velcro. this would have been a breeze if i could have gotten the base bolt loose without seeking help. btw, there are no instructions on how to put the chair together but it's pretty much a no-brainer.
Just wanna share my experience with Lexington Modern to all. I found this blog and read about this posting for Lexington and thought it would be a decent place to purchase chairs from. So I ordered a chair from them on July 11, 2010. Then I found out that my order was pending for 4 days for no reason. I called Lexington and the guy gave me some execuses about it warehouse was too busy and promised the chair would be shipped next day. Ok. So I waited another day, but my order status on its website still had not changed. I felt a bit suspicious about if they really got the chair that I ordered or not. So I called again and this time the guy told me that the warehouse had some issues and my order would be shipped on next Monday. Fine. Monday came and I waited until the end if the day. Finally, I order status changed to "shipped" with a FedEx tracking number. I was excited and tried to track my shipment, but only to find out that Lexington had only print the shipping label but had never called FedEx to pickup the package from its warehouse, according to the FedEx representative. What! How could that possible. And I smelt something shady here. So I called Lexington on Tuesday (7/20) again and I got mix signals from them. One guy told me the chair was shipped and if I had problem I should talked to the manager, David. Apparently, some old shady business, when I called for David, he was never available. Another guy told me (after I confronted with him about my finding from the FedEx representative that they had never called for pickup), that the chair was still in warehouse waiting for FedEx to pickup. He added that it was really "up to the FedEx guy to show up, and sometime he may not show up." I was very upset at this point. What kind of business is this. How can he blame it on FedEx for irresponsible when they have been doing business with FedEx for quite sometimes from its eBay online store. I found it very hard to believe how much hassle I have to go through when I purchase from Lexington. The last guy I talked to said the chair should be going out today, but as of now, the chair was still not being picked up according to the FedEx rep. It s been 9 days since I ordered. Well, Lexington claimed that all purchase would be shipped within 2 business days, but in this case, Lexington definitely not doing what it claims.
My recent experience with Lexington Modern is similar to KChow's; poor/unresponsive customer service & delayed shipping. I ordered counterstools back in early June from Lexington, was charged for them on my credit card, but never received shipping information. I sent an email to check on the order about a week later & never received a response. I followed-up with a call and was told (by the lackadaisical customer service guy) that the counterstools were on backorder & would not be available until the end of July. I was shocked since I hadn't been notified of the backorder & my card had already been charged for something that wasn't going to be available for another 8 weeks. Customer service told me that they had to charge my card in order secure the backorder. Now that it's the end of July, I sent several emails to check on the order & never received a response. I followed up with calls to customer service & received vague responses until I insisted on a specific shipping date & they told me that the stools were in the warehouse & would ship "any day". More than a week has gone by since then & they have only just now finally shipped. I only found this out by calling every day this week to check on it, since they do not respond to email.
I have no idea how Lexington received such a good rating on ebay. I, for one, will not be shopping with them again.
My husband ordered a repro (obviously) tulip table and chair with red cushion last week from Lexington Modern's Amazon store. Prior to ordering, we had checked their website several times over the past couple of months to review products and prices.
The products shipped the same day, arrived promptly (in less than a week), and had no damage or problems. The only issue we had was the local freight shipping company could not find our address and did not call to let us know. We spent more time on the phone with the freight company trying to reschedule delivery and taking apart the wooden pallet than worrying about the sale.
The products look great, were simple to assemble, and meet our needs for a computer workstation. We have no reason to not order from Lexington Modern in the future.
I've had the worst experience with this company. I ordered the tulip table in May. The table comes damaged. Not only that the box came with nails sticking out of the carton/crate and scratched up my floors. I call to get a replacement. They tell me they will ship me one right away. I hear nothing from them for a week and I call back. Customer service goes "oops" these are out of stock. So I asked why they didn't contact me to tell me earlier. They make up some lame excuse and say this item is on back order you can expect it in July. I call in July they say oh the guy gave you the wrong information, its coming in August. I call in August, they say the same thing, September. September they tell me to call back in October. Its also funny how they always tell me to call back on a date that is Jewish holiday. Since they are all Jewish they never pick up the phone on that day! So I got my table today finally. And guess what the table is damaged again. It's oval and not round! I call back and customer service refuses to give me another replacement and says that I will need to bring the table to their warehouse at my own cost to prove to them that there is a problem and if I wanted a refund I would need to pay out of pocket.
So recap I paid for a damaged table in May that scratched up my floors and got played by customer service for half a year. When I finally got the table, it was damaged again and now customer service won't replace it for me saying that is just how they table is made. They put me on hold for 20 min now and it seems like they went home.
Do not! I warn you! Do not order from this company. There are other repro companies that have far more superior customer service. No one should ever order from them and get played around like I did. In hindsight I should've bought the real thing and saved myself half a year of headaches.
Ok, I have read the plethora of quotes and experiences so far, I must admit I am conflicted. On the one hand, everyone who has ordered this tulip (seemingly easily breakable plastic) chair and/or counterpart table has not been pleased with the results. But what I am wondering is if anyone has had dealings with this company involving the reproduction Arne Jacobsen egg chair? I am SERIOUSLY coveting it in the terra cotta leather. Allegedly it is analine-dyed leather, which is comparable to the quality of the leather Tyler sofa my husband and I recently purchased from Mobilia, and considering the chair's construction I doubt it is easy to screw it up.?? Is there anyone out there who has had the hopefully good fortune of successfully receiving this little gem?
This is my story:
On October 26, after finding your orange womb chair for sale on Ebay at $599, I spoke to Moshe and he wrote me that I have to come & get the chair as they have it in stock at the warehouse. Which I did, only to my disappointment (first in a long line with this company) Moshe wasn't well informed as the chair was NOT in the warehouse. So I placed an order with Levi, paid $300 and been told the chair will arrive in 8 weeks at the most. 8 weeks later I called (as nobody there seems to return calls or keep customers updated on what's going on with their order) and been told by Levi that the chair is in the customs, waiting to arrive at the warehouse any day. I kept calling & getting the same run around for a couple of days... than it was Justin, to whom I spoke on January 3rd, who solemnly promised me he will take care of this for me, and he will call me the next day for updates. Never happened! I called 10 days later, and spoke to Micky, who said the chair should be at the warehouse by January 18th. So I called on January 18th only to get more aggravation from Micky, who now changed his story saying that maybe the next week will get the chair... at this point, I requested to speak with a supervisor, as it's been 3 months since I placed the order & only getting the run around. So after placing me on hold for 15 minutes, got cut off so I had to call back, I finally get Meir on the phone. He is now telling me is not next week that I might get the chair, it may be 2 weeks!!!! I am beyond aggravated at this point & I am requesting $100 of the FULL PRICE (with was $599) and I am AGAIN getting the run around! I am placed on hold AGAIN for 25 minutes this time, before being hung up upon. I called back, only to get Meir telling me he can only give me 5% off after all this!!! And to top it off -that I MAY get the chair EVENTUALLY in about 2 weeks!!! After 3 months already passed!!!!!!!
So at this point I am so furious about the whole deal, about the fact I got 5 different stories from 5 different people in this shady company, and 3 months after placing and order I'm not even given a reasonable discount for the inconvenience!
So everybody needs to know how Lexington Modern is choosing to treat its clients.
RUN - DO - NOT - WALK away from Lexington Modern Furniture. This is the WORST online order experience I've had in my entire life. If you value your sanity, time & dollars you will look elsewhere for replicas. Pay a hundred or two more at another site that has effective shipment processes, customer service and order history databases. Purchase at your own peril!!!!! LM charges your card, takes your money, then mysteriously items are on backorder. This appears to be a scam to get cash at worst or at best (so to speak) the worst online order systems and processes in the WORLD. BEWARE!!!!!!!
Folks - don't be duped, listen to kChow & ggk. I'm about to issue a dispute with AMEX for an item that was packaged like it was being moved across the living room. Of course it arrived damaged and now I'm existing in LM CUSTOMER SERVICE HELL!!
I have purchased a few items from Lexington Modern. I don't feel they make any claim that they are selling the real deal; all items are in the "style" of... All three items were shipped and received (in perfect condition) within a week of my order. I would say if you are looking for a classic touch on the cheap, then you should give this seller a try!
Not impressed at all. I ordered an eileen gray table and it arrived scratched and so crooked that it could not be put together. I called customer service to explain the problem and he tried to convince me to keep the table at 50percent off. But I explained it could not be put together at all, so he said he would send another, which he did. It came and was even more misaligned than the first. It just could not be assembled at all. The hole in the glass was in the wrong place and the screw did not fit into the hole. It was just a mess. I have since sent this one back and am waiting my refund. I of course refused to take another table. They tried to convincemeto take another table saying they had just changed manufacturers and that the new table comes already assembled. No way. Twice bitten trice shy.
I normally do not like to get involved in discussions such as this. But I would like to clear the air a bit. Inmod and lexington modern are in no way affiliated. Reproductions come out of over 100 factories in China (I have visited most). There are tremendous differences in quality and materials used in different factories. We do not import from the same manufacturers. Inmod imports the highest quality products made in the orient. You will see this in the materials offered on inmod reproductions, such as high wool content fabrics, stainless steel frames, and full grain / full aniline leathers. Inmod employs a full staff of customer service personnel here to assist customers.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. Most of the positive comments on this page were posted by vested interests in the company (I traced back with my computer--I'm a comp. tech). I think I just lost 600 bucks. I ordered 6 chairs, and my account is still being processed. I tried calling the company, but received a message saying they were closed (at 2PM on a Tuesday?). I sent more than one email---no response. I think they are out of business and this is a scam.
stay away from this company! I got burned trying to buy a table from them! Do not buy anything from them for any reason!
wow, bummer feedback. i just ordered a tulip table saturday. i hope it's a positive experience for me.
I wish I would have found this site sooner! I've been experiencing the same run around as the rest of you. I've been calling almost daily for the last two weeks. First it was the warehouse move, then the freight company (who had a tracking number but had never been authorized to pick anything up). The furniture was to have shipped 7-13-11, then 7-26-11, then 8-3-11 or 8-4-11. Luckily I made payment by credit card which I am disputing. The Lexington Modern web has listed the order as processing and won't allow me to cancel AND they have already charged my credit card for furniture I do not have. I would agree with the others STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. They will drive you nuts. Go somewhere else.
thank you. I am sufficiently scared and will not order from lexington modern. V. useful post
As am I!!! I've been checking out different repros of the Eames molded plywood lounge chairs. Sadly, I can't do the real thing, so I'm comparing those on Inmod, Lexington, and Gibraltar. Lexington's out now- any thoughts on Gibraltar? Unfortunately, they don't have free shipping... Thanks!
from kfur: (I traced back with my computer--I'm a comp. tech)
what a load of crap. if you've had a bad experience with a company, that's fine. you don't need to lie.
i've been interested in a lounge chair from these guys, but as they're also an amazon.com seller, it's probably best to go through amazon. free prime shipping, and if it's no good, amazon will handle the return no questions asked.
With their feedback on Ebay and Amazon, I took a leap of faith with Lexington. Ordered an LCW replica from one of their Amazon listings - got a tracking number this morning, will post an update when it arrives.
The LCW replica is good - the plywood isn't molded perfectly so I might have to modify the shock mount points on the neck a little - but overall I like the piece for the price.
Got a call from L.M. this morning - they're sending me replacement parts and aren't having me send back the defective ones. All in all I'm extremely satisfied with my order from them so far.
THINK TWICE ABOUT USING LEXINGTON MODERN!
I had (actually still have) an issue with one of the 6 office chairs I purchased, I filled out the claim form, spoke to two representatives who were very nice on the phone, but never did what they said they would do and never returned my calls or emails! VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! The problem is still unresolved after two months! I am a designer in the San Francisco area and I will never use them again!
I had my replacement parts within a week of speaking to LM on the phone - they fit and everything is great.
CarrieL - if you went though amazon I would suggest using the A to Z claim to get your money back if you haven't already. That's the only reason I was willing to order from them given the polarizing reviews by "real people" (not counting Amazon & Ebay's positive feedback)
Just received a Noguchi style table (free shipping was cool) from LM
Got a notice it shipped, two days later it was here, perfect
Do NOT order from Lexington Modern furniture! Just a friendly warning. I posted on the page to warn customers about my story: I ordered a chair and a coffee table that were listed "in stock", then they charged my card but never sent me confirmation emails, and I can't check my order status either. I didn't receive ANY calls or emails regarding my order shipment or status for 2 weeks, then I tried to call their customer service (the only phone number listed on their website), during weekday, from 10am-5pm, I called like every day, and the voice in the phone just keep saying "Sorry, our west coast office is now closed, please try again during our office hours blah blah blah". I couldn't get ahold of them for 3 whole weeks, wrote them countless emails and no replies. So I went to my bank and appeal the charges, then I also canceled my card just to be safe. THEN 3 months later, yeah, 3 MONTHS, I received a call from them inquiring about my order status. They said "they got my order and failed to charge my card, and sorry for the delay because they didn't have the chair in stock". I simply told them no, and I hung up. This is unacceptable. Plus, they sell replica of the patented furniture pieces that were designed by famous designer - but they didn't get the permission to produce them-they just do it anyway. Because all of their factories are in Asia, they have really uneven quality of products. My friend ordered from them and received a table 5 months late (not in stock, again), then the table arrived broken, scratched, and the drill holes wont line up with the nails. She demanded for a return and refund, they charged her for 150 dollars just to ship it back to factory. Now I ran into this page, and saw these people considering buying stuff from them, I just thought I should give this warning. I posted my story briefly on the page, but the page administrator deleted it immediately, and permanently banned me from their page so I can't post any comments on their wall ever again. This is a shady company. They just do shady stuff to their customers, leave them confused and ripped off, then doesn't even bother to give any apology or explanation.
Beware. That's all I want to let you know. Thanks for reading.
And I made a page on facebook just to warn everyone about it. I'm not asking for any likes on the page. Just spread it around if you can, and try to warn others to stay away from this shady company.

DO NOT BUY from Lexington Modern. Everybody is correct in saying you get what you pay for and I wasn't expecting too much as I was getting something cheap. But I did expect a delivery without much hassle. A week after my purchase had been listed as Shipped on their website, there was no tracking information from them or the shipper, whom I had never heard of, by the way. I called. Mostly got a message stating they were now closed (it was 1 PM on the west coast!). After a couple days I got someone on the phone who looked into it and found my sofa had been still sitting on their dock. A sofa sits on your dock for a week and you don't question what it's doing there? So they shipped it via another courier whom they said was more reliable. When it finally arrived a week later I was told by the driver that they are just a shipper and they don't bring items into the house--they just drop them off. So there I was, left with a sofa on the curb in front of my building. By Myself.
You've destroyed my hopes and dreams! I was really hoping on buying all this imitation stuff because DWR is DNWR for me.
I don't live close to Lex :(
So reading all these posts lead me to believe Lex had to partner with bad vendors and bad shipping and to top it off stressed out customer services caught in the middle of this mess...all this lead to these unfortunate postings of broken furniture, late furniture, and frustrated customers.
5 months late? cmon.
I had hoped 2012 would come back with some positive postings of Lex solving these issues by now. But the last posting from march and feb 2012.. ugh.. From the front, the website looks good, an excellent selection of products, a great BIO on the inspiration and history all this stuff comes from. Lex also jumped on the daily deal bandwagon, groupon inspired.
Lex has good potential, I hope they do the right thing and get their online department together. I really like what the company stands for. They better re-train customer service. And they better have tracking automatically enabled on purchase like other sites.
5 months late? please.. broken furniture? bad production with un-aligned holes?
on the bright side.. if you live close to a Lexington.. I envy you since you can inspect the product, buy on site,, and load it up in your truck like an IKEA easy purchase. so at least you can avoid the shipping issues and pick out a nicely crafted product out of the heap. Made in china! LOL.
Good luck buyers.. to your hopes and dreams of modern furniture..
NEVER BUY FROM HERE: Bought 10 chairs from here and they all ripped within 6 months. All in roughly the same spot. 10 other of the same chair from them didn't rip at all. Will they honor the year warranty? NO......WILL NEVER BUY FROM HERE AGAIN.
