at,
i would like to set up a large creative area in my new apartment and need to find a very large work table that would act as a center island. ideally, i would like to be able to sit and work on all sides of it, so the legs should either be in the four corners, or a center column. using the space under the table for material storage would be even nicer.
however, i haven't been able to find anything suitable. i am looking at something in roughly this size: 75" x 60". Any suggestions where to look for such a solution?
thanks!

Daniel,
Assuming you don't want to buy two steel tables from a restaurant supply store (or Craigslist) and push them together, we thought of two stores that make tables to order. We confirmed with both of them that they could make a table that large:
•Gingko Home Furnishings
• The Wooden Duck
Anyone else?

You can go to Room & Board and order a custom sized Parson's Table.
Depends on how much money & muscle you have. Something that big is heavy and difficult to move in/out - legs would have to come off.
How about 2 tables with braking castors? They would be more versatile and at 40 x 60 inches (1 x 1.5 metres) could double up for dining. You could roll them away from the under-table storage, and also have a table 40 x 120 inches, or at right angles for a party.
For this plan you would need legs by Haefele and two tops about 3 inches thick. Nice & inexpensive, depending on what you use for the tops - ply would be OK and can be sealed, edges half bullnosed showing the layers.
check out the dordoni table at dwr. it's expensive, but maybe you can find it at the sample sale? two of them would give you the dimensions you're looking for and there is room under the table for drawers or rolls of paper.
Go back to the dot-com days and make something with doors (you'd need to connect two somehow) balanced on top of either small bookshelves or filing cabinets/flat files. You'll get plenty of storage space that way and the result will be cheap as can be. Doors often come in a 30x80 size, so you should end up with a 60x80 table that's easy to access from all sides.
Two options are:
Metal table from Blu Dot:

Wood Table from Crate & Barrel:

Both are great options for work tables.

ah, if you want to DIY it.. you can buy the table legs from ikea, which has a pretty wide selection. if you can find a used door somewhere in the house you are not using or off junk yards. just prop it on your legs. viola!
Crate and Barrel's Basque dining table is about the size you're looking for (82" x 38"), and it's just a great all around table. It's the kind of table you'll keep for life - I can't say enough good things about ours.
