Where can I find a media center, ideally in a dark wood, that is childproof and under $1K? My baby girl is obsessed with our DVD player and would hit the buttons all day. What we would like is a media center with drawers or cabinets to hide the DVD player and accoutrements.
Help save my apartment from three different shades of odd Ikea furniture and a curious toddler!
Thanks,
Laura

Dear Laura,
There's a wide range of options for closed media cabinetry out there, at all price points. Whether you DIY or buy something custom, you should look for ventilation for your components, and holes for wire and cable management. Here's a list to start (and maybe end) your search:
DIY:
• How to: Make a Quick-&-Easy Media Cabinet
• How To: Turn an Ikea Lack Shelf into a Media Console
$$
• Mathias Frei's MShelving (customizable, starting at $782)
• Gingko's Low Tansu Panel TV Cabinet, $980
• Room & Board's modular Madsen system, the $599 Stow and the $999 Lasalle
$$$
• Custom cabinets from Seattle's Kerf Design or SF's Jason Lees Design
Any other ideas out there?

I had the same problem. My son is now 2 1/2 and and the only thing that works is something that closes. Room and Board will probably be a little over 1K but I got the Linear media cabinet with glass doors in walnut and its gorgeous and we haven't had one problem.
