I have a bedroom-related question for Bedroom Month. I've approached the decoration of my bedroom in the wrong order, I'm afraid.
my mother was kind enough to sew olive faille curtains that puddle on the floor, and, in true eBay Scavenger style, I bought these Thomas Paul pillows to match.
The problem is, I can't find a duvet to match. Obviously, I don't want anything with a bold pattern that will compete with the pillows. I'd prefer a tailored duvet cover with an olive border, but this is proving incredibly elusive. I have scoured such sites as Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Room and Board, BB&B, Linens 'n' Things, and Macy's. I have come up empty. I haven't bought nighstands or lamps yet, so the bedroom is a blank slate but for the curtain.
Maybe I am thinking too narrowly and should go for another color duvet, like chocolate brown.
Thanks, Molly.
Link To All Good Questions
Hey Molly, First we think those pillows are a dream. Our last bedroom was painted a similar "olive" color, and we found it so calming. We had both chocolate brown and cream accents. To us, it seems like a clean white is the one way NOT to go.
We say take the pillow out, fold up the case and bring it shopping. Hold it up to different duvets in the store. You may be pleasantly surprised what works... the right smoky blue, or a deep rust/orange, which would look stunning with the golden tones of the pillows. Depending on your finances, you could look at Restoration Hardware's choices, like their Thai Silk Botanical Bedding.
Anyone else have an idea for Molly?

Also look at sheets. If you find the right color, it's a cinch to sew up a duvet cover out of two flat sheets, and you can put nice buttons on it. Maybe your mother will even help!
hey Molly!
You are in luck. Jonathan adler is having a sale and there are couple of duvet and sheet sets that fits your color scheme PERFECTLY..... check it out.

and then it would be an Adler/Paul bedroom.... how chic!
o funny, I have that pillow too
Molly, I have always loved deep navy blue with olive and cream or olive and gold. Also, a light powder blue can work, as can coal or other deeper shades of pink.
Typo: I meant CORAL not coal. Sheesh!
I like the chocolate idea for cooler months, and a natural canvas color for warmer weather.
Also, try Garnet Hill for other solid color (and patterned) inspiration. My favorite color there right now is the "Ochre" of their hem stitch flannel sheets. I think Garnet Hill currently has some Mums-inspired bedding that could work really well with the floral side of the pillow.
Or, head to a fabric store, and find fabrics that use the olive but introduce other colors. May lead to some unexpected inspiration.
I think other colors to consider introducing would be the aforementioned navy, coral (orange-y, pinky or very red-y), light blue, and perhaps a terra cotta. And I am always a lover of the taupe...
Another way into the solution would be to consider the pillows the "necktie" of a men's outfit... you just need to pick the shirt (sheets) and the suit (the duvet/comforter). I'm liking a robin's egg blue "shirt" and a chocoloate brown or even charcoal gray "suit." So maybe head to a department store and cruise the Men's shirt/tie department?!
I think another either REALLY small scale pattern or REALLY large scale pattern could also work.
I would pick up the natural canvas color of the pillows and find a duvet in that color with little or no pattern, and then introduce red accents in the shape of lamps. That would keep it modern. I love the pillow by the way.

I actually like the idea of "coal" even if you meant "coral"! :)
What pals you all are. I'm mulling all the ideas, but I'm quite attracted to PTOO's ochre (as well as the cinnamon at Garnet Hill). I hadn't considered navy coal, natural canvas, or coral.
In my searches, I ran across this set in unusual hues for a bedroom:

And this delightful pillow:

Perhaps these finds will be of use to someone else.
Whatever the bed cover, I am planning to buy Thomas O'Brien lamps from Marshall Fields.

I'm particularly fond of the Academy table lamp. Marshall Fields gift cards sell at a discount of 15% or more on eBay, so I'm hoping to buy a few, combine them, and buy the lamps.
I'm also enamored of the restored Herbert Terry anglepoise lamps that several English eBay sellers regularly offer, but the price (plus shipping from the UK) is prohibitive.
Thanks, everyone!

Also some nice (and nicely priced) choices here:

I think the plum or hydrangea would look nice with your olive. I got the hydrangea duvet and shams and they are lovely.
Check out page 54 of the latest Domino mag - it might give
you some inspiration.
They tied in a similiar green as yours with a nice magenta berry red.
Not exactly what I would have thought to be a nice color combination - but it works.
Good luck...
oooh another idea that happens to be on sale.

i don't know about the pink and brown.... but the other 2 color choices would look great.
How about a soft, washed indigo?

Thanks to Lesley for the linensource.com tip.

I think that Calvin Klein collection you show offers a wealth of possibility for building the room out in a monochromatic scheme.
Just also saw a "peacock blue" color (a past fave from West Elm) that would work nicely, too.
