Hello there--
I am wondering if anyone in apartment therapy land knows of a company in the bay area that specializes in disassembling & moving couches?
Seems to be a good business in NYC, but I am having a heck of a time finding anything out here. (I saw this post from a couple years back in NY.)

I really don't want to sell my beautiful ivory microfiber couch with down filled cushions, but I might just have to sell it on the classifieds in the next couple days if I don't find a solution! :(
Help!
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca,
This is the first time we've received a question about this and we don't have any referrals at the ready, but we do know that what you're looking for is either KNOCK DOWN SERVICE (the disassembly and reassembly of upholstered furniture) or a FINISH CARPENTER (someone who can remove your couch's legs and reassemble the whole kit and kaboodle in such a way that this can be easily accomplished again when you next move). Does anyone out there know of anyone local, perhaps affiliated with a mover already, who offers either of these services?

How did you get it *in* the apartment?
I was going to ask that very queastion (in refering to maryja) as once you get it in, you can get it back out.
I know I've dealt with situation like this in the past and it may well take some inginuity to get it through the door. You may have to stand it on end and wiggle it through the doorway if you have to.
it seems to me that you need to get the piece into another apt. and that place is the problem...If you are in s.f and perhaps dealing w/ a victorian with a twisty staircase as was my case, I discovered that removing a window, top and bottom, provided an opening wide and tall enough to allow a sofa to pass through...there are usually very thin wood pieces at the edges of the casement that can be removed and the rope attatched to the window weight is revealed when you swing the window out. (This is also a great way to wash the windows on the outside if you are above the 1st story)
i recently had to remove a door to get a couch in to stage a home. have you tried it? when you move the couch you also have to leverage it a little bit. you may need to move 1 end up or tilt it to get it in. in this particular home i did the entrance is on 2nd floor and we tilted the couch up and down several times and finally got it into the home. the whole time i felt like ross from friend "pivot! pivot!"
cheers,
cindy
I feel your pain Rebecca, we have a couch that had the same problem in our old apartment. I think it took us almost an hour to finally get it in the apartment, removed the door and the feet on the sofa and had to wiggle it in, in the process scuffing the walls. When we moved, we were very close to just leaving it in there, but managed to get it out doing more or the less the same as getting it in.
Good luck, hopefully you will be able to get it moved without too much trouble!
