Good Questions: Is it Safe to Buy Furniture on eBay?

Pin it button big

Hello AT!

I am looking for a mid century dresser and was going through some eBay postings. Some of them look promising but since I have never bought furniture on eBay, I need your help!

How many ATers have bid on and bought furniture on eBay? Is the furniture in good condition? Were you satisfied with your purchase and the price you paid for it?

Thanks in advance!
MN

Dear MN,

We wouldn't be posting furniture from eBay (see our weekly Wednesday eBay Scavenger finds) if we didn't believe wholeheartedly in auction commerce. Not only is this a more affordable and green way to furnish your home, it's also a great way to net quality, unique treasures.

We've had only one negative experience buying furniture through an eBay auction, and it was with a seller who did not disclose some damage to a fairly expensive item and who would not take it back or even refund part of our winning bid. We eventually cut our losses, left him negative feedback and moved on. He was an exception; our experience with the vast eBay community is that sellers are, by and large, a very honorable and trustworthy bunch.

Over time we've learned to take full advantage of the community self-policing tools that eBay provides: we read all of the seller's description, especially the info they offer on shipping fees, we ask questions if something's unclear, and we peruse a seller's feedback ratings and comments -- all before even bidding. If you're new at budding, we suggest you do all of the above, and start by bidding on something small and inexpensive so that you can keep the stakes low while you learn the ropes.

Anyone else have an eBay tale to tell or bidder/buyer advice to share?
