Where can I buy curtains in Boston — besides the usual chain places? I'm looking for patterned or detailed contemporary curtains to dress three large windows in my bedroom. Thanks, AT Boston!

Anyone have a suggestion that's outside the chain store realm?

If you can't sew you can always have some made by a local seamstress. If you buy the fabric yourself I can't imagine it would cost that much to have some made. Curtains are all straight seams and are one of the easiest first sewing projects out there!
I am with Monica on this one. I have priced cool curtains EVERYWHERE, and it is soooo much better to find a cool fabric, and sew them. The supplies section on Etsy typically has some great fabrics, and it is REALLY easy to make them.Email me, and I can send you easy instructions on how to.
I've had great luck with buying printed sheets from places like Urban Outfitters or Marshalls and just sewing a straight line to create a pocket for a tension rod. There's a fun tutorial on thepurlbee.com, too, for a fabric-to-curtain project.
A good source for fabric right now is the Fabric Place (Woburn and Framingham.) They're sadly going out of business, but are selling most fabric at 50% off (or more) and will likely be closed for good by November. They have/had a selection of modern/contemporary decorator fabrics. I just bought the remainder of a bolt of Amy Butler fabric to make curtains with. Online, a good fabric source is purlsoho.com
