Good Questions: Help My Mother Pick Paint Colors

Dear AT, My parents have decided to re-paint their house and they've asked for my help in choosing colors. My tastes are pretty different from theirs, and I'm really not sure how to deal with their furniture/color scheme/picture rail etc. But I'm excited that they're willing to be a little more adventurous in the color department, so I'd love some ideas on what would look good before they get discouraged and just paint the whole place white... ...Currently the walls are assorted off-whites, but my mother has expressed an interest in making the wall with the fireplace into an accent wall. The colors in the rooms are mostly reds, blues, creams, and golds, plus miscellaneous wood tones. Any ideas? Thanks, Carrie ps - my mother was dismayed that I took pictures for the internet without cleaning first, so I'd like to point out that she's really a very tidy person, usually.

Anyone?
