Graham sent in a good question:I recently moved into my first apartment, and since I am now completely on my own with no roommates, I have had to buy all my own furniture. Long story short; I live in a building where I am not permitted to paint, so I am stuck with white walls. I purchased the walnut CB2 Movie Sofa over the weekend and I would like a chair that goes with it...

...I'm not opposed to Ikea, but I'd rather spend money on something that has a name attached to it for resale value.
We're thinking this sounds like a good place to inject some vintage style to the room. The Movie Sofa is a nice choice - a flexible piece that will work with most styles. So we'd hit the Scavengers each day and go for something a bit unusual that really speaks to you. For example, for the price of one new lower-end armchair, you could add two used Bertoia side chairs to the mix, which would definitely retain some value.

whys it always gotta be vintage?
I like the Craigslist advice...
...or you could go back to CB2 and get a pair of the Briar Wingchairs in red.
I don't know what's considered "good" for retaining value, but in my experience you can generally get 1/2 of current price for an ikea piece still in production, so sometimes more than 1/2 of what you paid for it, assuming it's in good condition and still available. And if you get it in good condition used and treat it well, I would think that you could potentially come out ahead. Possibly.
These are my theories based on too much time perusing the Mpls Craigslist.
Just about any well designed chair would go with that sofa. Just keep in mind the scale.
am i looking for something that is low and wide like the couch? i believe what is causing the biggest amount of confusion is matching, or complementing the size and color. i dont want it to look so out of place like its a bunch of stuff i got for free like when i was in college.
the walls are white, and the floor is tile that is off white and has some darker shades to it. im just trying keep the room from washing together by using whites.
i forgot to add that i would like something comfortable to sit in for a period of time, like for a movie or football game. the small steel chairs are cool, but if i had to sit in them, id probably throw them out haha
Hey Graham, how is the quality of the CB2 movie couch? Is it comfortable?
moetbubble: the couch is awesome! i absolutely love it! a lot of friends ive talked to are opposed to it because it has such a low back, but when you sit down, it really makes you sit IN the couch, not on it. the large single cushion is firm, yet very comfortable. one of the things that sold me on this couch is that it is long enough for me to lay down on and my feet are still on the cushions, and im 6'0" tall. id highly recommend it!
